Crime Novels to Film - Rum Punch / Jackie Brown - Episode #1

- “Crime Novels to Film” takes on the book version versus the movie version debate for classic crime novels and classic crime films to see which version tells the story better. Each week, this ongoing series offers commentary and criticism of popular crime fiction books and their live-action adaptations, featuring the best in mysteries, thrillers, suspense, hardboiled crime fiction and classic film noir.
“Crime Novels to Film” compares and contrasts the plot, characters, dialogue and presentation of the crime novel by using images from the live-action adaptation (or adaptations) to describe the plot details. Sometimes the two don’t match up, but it does help me tell the story.
“Rum Punch”, written by Elmore Leonard, was adapted into the 1997 film, “Jackie Brown”, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Starring Pam Grier, Robert Forester, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda and Robert DeNiro.

The depth of knowledge was impressive. This review was informative and grounded in the industry but made understandable to the common person. I will definitely be reading the book! Thank you.
Very fine review of both the book and movie. You’re right in the movie, thank God Tarantino dropped the racist skin head, such a stupid character. Something Donald Westlake also made the mistake of including in Flashfire.
But like the novel Gone Girl, Rum Punch can get away with things on the page that cannot be tolerated on the screen. Number one: Why didn’t Ordell call and warn Jackie not to bring the money or drugs back with her? He had time, Nicolette and his partner didn’t know about Jackie until after they interrogated Beaumont. (And an aside, why didn’t Ordell know Beaumont’s last name? It was on his nameplate on his apartment) Beaumont called Ordell probably around noon on Monday. After being picked up over the weekend. So Ordell bails him out, murders him and sits and waits until Jackie comes back and gets arrested. Come On! And the whole elaborate ending in the shopping mall, why did she bring all the money into the dressing room? Max Cherry could’ve gotten to the mall early waited around for her, to see if she was being followed by the cops, then she could’ve just left the money in her hatchback, Max could’ve then went and got the money without ever going into the mall. Plus Tarantino I think can’t or won’t film sex scenes. (Not the quicky between Melanie and Louis, which was played more for laughs) But in the book Max and Jackie go at it pretty hot and heavy. But here we have people in their 40’s and 50’s acting like a couple of teenagers who’ve never had sex. Totally unbelievable. I think the movie and book are fine, but IMHO Leonard isn’t in the same class as Westlake, especially Parker, the movie is an okay, leisurely paced, not too bright crime movie.
Sorry for the prolixity.
I'm a huge Donald Westlake fan myself.
WATCHING JACKIE BROWN FOR THE 5TH OR 6TH TIME SINCE I WAS YOUNG - I''M 85 NOW [LOL] - I'M TEMPTED TO PUT IT ON A "BEST FILMS EVER" LIST WITH CITIZEN KANE, MEAN STREETS, BONNIE AND CLYDE. = YEAH, REALLY. NICE WEBSITE BTW,
Audio?
Not sure what happened there. It had audio?
It's back...maybe a temporary glitch.
Can just hear the music but the narration is inaudible. Sounds like pukka pukka pukka
