When he won the only World Idol that has ever been held, he got so many comments on his appearance that he probably decided he didn't want to take that shit - so he chose to focus on Norway, where he is loved just the way he is.

The paradox is that another Norwegian with a wonderful voice, Morten Harket from a-ha, got so much attention because of his beautiful appearance that he was sick of the eternal focus on him, and not on the band and the music. A beautiful appearance is of course good when you want attention as a new artist, but it can be too much attention, both one way and the other.
