Andrea Bernstein's remarkably wide and deep investigation of the Trumps and Kushners restores my love for dissenting American genius.

I lived in NJ for 60 yrs so all this stuff the author speaks about I remember. What’s so great is her ability to assemble all this stuff and lay it out for everyone to see and understand.
Living in central NJ and reading the Daily News and NY Times newspapers all those years, plus the N.Y. news channels - we all had the impression that trump was a user and manipulater of people and the media - the greatest guy, with the best of everything etc etc
After moving out of state and traveling the country extensively I was always dumbfounded to see people support trump as some kind of ‘everyman’ type that every vet, blue collar worker sees him as their hero. Which is stunning as hell cause if it were some other than trump that had a business track record of over 4000 lawsuits, types to both the N.Y. and PhiLly mob bosses as well as ties to the Russian mob in Brighton Beach NY area , plus number of massive bankruptcies etc etc.- these trump supporters would not give that guy any support and would instead be telling everyone around them that that business man was crooked etc.
All of which just show what a fantastic manipulater trump is - maybe the only thing that makes him #1 among US Presidents. Trump got his education in manipulating via need to market/ sell both to bankers to get their money and RE buyers he is selling to as well as the local politicians who had had to approve his projects. As for learning how to manipulate the broader General population- via his learning how to manipulate the N.Y. newspapers and social magazines etc, also his time working the blue collar crowds at the WWE wrestling crowds and his time on TV with his tv show that polished up his business reputation ( even after his 6 bankruptcies and no US bank any longer willing to lend him money).

Watching this video in August 2021 is still pertinent and explains so much more than I understood a year ago even though I listen to the Trump Inc podcast and knew a lot about the crime family enterprise and the family dynamics for decades. I read a book in the early 70's by Hal Lindsey, "The Late Great Planet Earth". In it he wrote that the United States would be taken over from within. It was shocking and scary. I did not understand how that could be possible. I get it now.

The author who really has Trump's number is David Cay Johnston (also has the scoop on the whole family). Johnston's advantages over virtually every other researcher stem from fact he has studied Trump and clan for over 40 years, and has probably the largest collection of documents on them in the world. The Making of Donald Trump (2016, I believe) is a MUST read. (Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and very very knowledgeable about tax law and the legal system, a huge advantage.) Trump is far less a businessman than a mobster.

Highly recommend the "Frontline" interviews with Steve Bannon and, particularly, Ann Coulter for a full look at Trump and his political rise. Really curious if their success could have happened this way in any other industrialised democracy. I am an American currently living in South America. This is what I have learned about Americans over the past 7 years. Americans are spoiled. We know everything about everything and more than in many other countries we have had too much done FOR us. We have become dependent wards of Washington D.C. To sum it up, a story I read in a local paper about how an American tourist was killed in a large and dangerous city in a South American country. The hotel advised him to only take a cab from their hotel because it was dangerous for a tourist to hail a cab on the street. The American tourist responded, "I'm an American and I can do anything I want to do". These were some of his last few words because he was murdered in a cab he hailed on the street. Americans can be too arrogant for their own good. This also applies to taking candidates seriously.
When I was a young man I was lost did not know what to do to get ahead. My brother was working as a salesmen for a furniture store making great money. Then one day I had a brain wave and offered to work for the same store for free for 6 weeks to show I to could do it . Within a year I was in my own store managing it for them . .It was their I found out how the people I thought were so smart I looked up to them . When I realized it did not take smart to make the money they did . You just need to be a crook . Selling lots of goods and not paying the suppliers . No need for smarts . Just hire other people to take the heat for you . Does any of this sound familiar in 2020 lol . Thing is they would through their managers under the buss . Some of whom went to jail . But not the owners. The pattern is the same as the Trumps . How people like that can look at themselves in a mirror beats the heck out of me . I wont criticize buy I will say If you back Trump you must think its OK that the leader of your country is a crook end of story. .
Its worse than that; we once worried about a voting bloc that didn't mind a leader who committed crimes. Now we find that there's a bloc that not only tolerates them- they actively encourage them, or even demand them. They seriously want a crime boss as leader- so long as he can get away with it, hopefully on their behalf. Because "that makes him smart."

I don't think one can change one's class. Class is something we are born into and with. I would never describe either Donald Trump or Charlie Kushner as having class. It cannot be bought.
