This guy is amazing. After watching this video I called him and I asked him a question and he was very polite and professional. I told him that I am in NY and it doesn't stopped him to answer my question and help me out. He told me that he is in Arizona.
Roger, THANK YOU for assisting! Not just with impeller cleaning but your vast technical experience in the industry. It is helpful to have skilled technicians such as yourself out there to assist others who are learning new skills each and everyday. Over the years I have found that if I do not learn something new, almost everyday, I am most likely not doing something right. Keep up the effort, summers here, look forward to more videos come fall time!
Thank you! You saved me a service call to the pool company. So easy. I have been looking after my pool since 2001 and did not know about this. I will make it part of my checks from now on.
Thank you Roger! Pump is working perfectly now after unclogging the impeller. I will make this a weekly maintenance check from now on. Keep up the good work!!
OMG! Thank you. I have spent the last 3 weeks trying to work out why the pool hasn't got a strong filter. Checked absolutely everything (except the impeller😩). I learnt something today and am forever thankful. Cheers to you.
I'm a first-time pool owner, this is my first season. Had no idea the impeller even existed, and thus haven't cleaned it. It was super clogged. This solved my low pressure problem. Huge help, thanks man.

welcome to pool ownership. So glad this helped you !!
Me too. This video was super helpful. I tried vacuuming last night and no suction. The basket on side of pool was clean. I finally gave up. I went out this am to shut pump off. Been running 12 on 12 off. And no water was flushing around like it was suppose to. Nothing. I looked inside and it has alot in it. Pools been up a week yesterday. The clear see thru lid I couldn't get off. Will have my husband try. Hoping it's just to tight. Thank you so much for this video. I'm now a subscriber.

@@robingirard5423 we have been working hard in the past year to bring more helpful videos
Thank you big-time I feel like this is the problem I'm having with my pool I'm new to this pool stuff but I'm getting the hang of it thanks to guys like you helping me and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video👊🏾
Thank you. I found what was a plastic bag in the impeller, along with other miscellaneous stuff. I used a wire hanger with a small hook at the end. Perfect!
Perfect video to help explain a simple fix to what would otherwise seem like a perplexing issue of a pump that won't prime and a system that won't reach full pressure. Thanks!
I had low pressure, 8 psi when it is usually 12-15, and I knew it wasn't a suction line clog because it was low pressure when in both spa and pool modes. I checked the impeller but not as this gentleman instructed, so I didn't find the clog. I cleared the impeller of leaves and now it is working perfectly again. Thank you True Method and the TH-cam community for helping me fix everything in my house and on my vehicles and saving me thousands of dollars.

Saving pool owners money is what we strive for....glad we were able to help !
Maaaan you just solved MY issue . My pump was making a super off/odd LOUDER noise when I turned it on tonight. So I KNEW man somethings up. Did the screwdriver. LOTS N LOTS of GRASS came right out . Flipped on the switch sounded normal. N all is well now. THANK YOU!!
I was away for a few weeks and when I came back my pump pot was full of debris and I cleaned it out and the pump would not prime. I checked several things like the intakes and pool floor drain to see if something was clogged. I was starting to think the pump had overheated and was damaged, and I was going to have to spend hundreds of $ on a new pump. I came across this video and tried it. Bang, that was the issue. The intake had a bunch of debris in it and after cleaning it out with a small screw driver, the pump took off and primed immediately. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! It really saved me to hassle and expense.

So glad you tried this and now you don't have to spend money on a new pump !
THANK YOU! After spending an hour trying to figure out what was causing my low pressure issue, I watched your video, went back to the pump, and sure enough, there was a bunch of grass and leaves in the impeller. Pressure went right back to where it should be. HURRAH!
Thank you for this video, I was at a loss! Had low pressure at the return eye and when backwashing. Impeller was packed with tree leaf casings that must have been sucked past the skimmer and pump baskets. I used a flexible drain cleaner and my finger to dislodge the debris.
I have a Pentair Challenger system and I tried your method when I was investigating a low pressure issue. I couldn't detect any debris that way, but when I removed the clamp and the diffuser, the impeller was so crammed full of stuff that it was hard to understand how the pump was working at all. It was easy to clean out. My PSI tripled and my GPM doubled!! Unfortunately, I was never able to get the pump back together with a perfect seal. In an outdoor environment, you probably wouldn't even notice the leak. Nevertheless, if your pump is more than a few years old, I recommend buying the relevant o-rings or a go-kit before opening it. Just my experience.
first of all i would like to thank you for this amazing video which is honestly very helpful to me. The following happened to me: after a flood, the pump was covered by water which cover almost tthe electrical panel. Do you have any video to recommend how to clean the pump? What exactly should I disassemble and what should I do? I would appreciate if you kindly answer for this question with your suggestions . My location is in Paros island in Greece and at this month (August) is inpossible to find any one for maintenance
Really hoping this is what is wrong with mine. I noticed today the gauge is at zero and not moving when it normally sits around 10. Thank you for posting this!
Thanks for the video. I have a capacitor that I believe needs replacing. I'm having a hard time finding one with the same specs. 250-300 if 110VAC +65 C. Any idea where I can get my paws on one or are there any other that are compatible? Thanks again.
Top tip, be sure your pump is bonded to ground before trying this. Something was energizing my pump through the ground wire I guess? I imagine if they properly bonded it, the breaker would have tripped. Anyway, I got a little surprise when I tried to clean my impeller the other day. Not much current, but enough that I knew it was there.
My impeller spins freely so got new capacitor when old one turned out to be bad but still hums. if impeller spins by hand could it still be the problem. Asking before taking things apart
Try taking the top off the pump . Put 5 way valve on recirculation and open the return valve [ make sure electric is off ] The water flows backwards and normally clears the impeller
My pump was making a noise like if there was a rock stuck inside, rattling, and the pressure had dropped. I cleaned the impeller just like you advised and POW, my pump is back in service, Pressure is up, and noise is gone... Thanks...
An alternate method, after removing the pump basket ... release the air bleed on the filter and all the water inside above the pump line flushes backward through the impeller forcing the clog free.
@@poolmonkey7479 Not a bad tip, but it most of the time it doesn't generate enough back pressure to release debris. Even trying to dig debris out from the pot doesn't always get it. Thats why I like Challenger and Sta-Rire pumps, they have that band clamp that allows for easy access to impeller.
I checked all of the stuff you mentioned, the pressure is not strong as it use to suck my hand in the skimmer. There are bubbles coming out of the pool, I cleaned everything, I changed the pipes, no more leaks, no air, but nothing has worked, what else? My pool turned green, my gauge is at 6 it used to run on 10, and every time I plug the vacuum hose it drops to 0, help, what else can I do?
what does it mean when the display on pump motor says Alarm 'overcorrect' There is a hum, but the pump does not actuate. i have cleaned the filters and ensured the water levels are full
I press reset and then the display reads ' display not active' then flips back to 'alarm overcurrent' i have turned off system at mains to hopefully reset it, but the same problems appears
The motor has burnt out. Current is going through the outer wiring and causing a hum but is not inducing a current in the secondary wiring due to burnt out wires. The Chinese are stingy and use thin wires.
Can’t you just twist off the pot? I have a pentair dynamo, that pot turns 45° to remove. I have big hands, I’ll try the screw driver trick, otherwise I may need to remove it entirely to get to the impeller.
John T same here... I think the impeller is stuck and the motor is struggling to get it turning... there probably was an automatic cutoff that stopped the process to avoid overheating so your pump might not be dead... let it cool down and try again.
Make the tool out of a clothes hanger - easy and much cheaper... Should have told them that the reason why most of the time is a bad pump basket which needs to be replaced. True that some times stuff is smaller than the grids on the pump basket but not very often.
My pump is leaking, there is no pressure, it use to be at 10 and then move to 20 when the filters needed to be cleaned. Now it is back to zero. I had a pool man come out, he said he would charge me 350 dollars to come and fix it
igal rabaev I believe it's because the water is returning back to the pool, once all the water returns you can then fill it up with the water hose helping the process when you close the lid and turn the pump back on. But don't quote me on that I'm not no poor scientist or nothing😂
I tried all the suggestions here. My impeller was clear... I ended up having to replace the pump which was dead (Hayward). I bought a new Hayward Power-flo Matrix pump and needed to rotate the body so the water output was positioned on the side. I made a quick little video if anyone else needs to know how to do the rotation. th-cam.com/video/RFbIvJwNAsM/w-d-xo.html
