Quimper is surprisingly little-known beyond a few Brittanyphiles. Certainly, I’d never heard of the place until a few years ago when in pleasant Rennes, and trying to shake off the severe underwhelming disappointment of poor, dear war-blasted Brest, someone suggested the place. Quimper, for me, has 3 core things going in its favour. Firstly, it’s full of history (mostly still-standing, fortunately) and this richness is palpable from the moment you arrive. Its streets are stuffed with pretty, often half-timbered, houses and the Gothic St Corentin Cathedral provides a grand focal-point. Secondly, it’s small(ish). It has a villagey feel, notwithstanding its 60,000 population, and everything worth seeing is within easy striking-distance. And thirdly, and for me perhaps most importantly, it has a palpable soul. Pretty as it is, it hasn’t sold its soul to the soiled terms and conditions of mass tourism. The shopkeepers are friendly, people smile (not always with great teeth, tbh, for this *is* France, after all) and there is just a very lovely air of somewhere not only pleasant to while away a day of your life, but also pleasant enough to while away the rest of the days of your life. In sum, visit it. If only to shake off the severe bathetic emptiness of Brest.
@@titteryenot4524 French authorities want it to name Rennes "capital of Brittany" because they decided Loire Atlantique department doesn't belong to Brittany : a tricky way to weaken Brittany .French are still very afraid of a strong Brittany because they know the whole Brittany still struggle for homerule ( Emrenerezh I Breton language). The outside world doesn't realise how France is still realm of authoritarian Jacobinism. Ken ar c'hentañ.
@@ayangdidi5524 I disagree. Yes, the Bretons have a proud heritage and culture, but as with the French Basques or the French Flemish the majority are quite happy to remain part of France first, and then Brittany, Basque Country and in the Flemish regions.

Do you know Basque seems to be quite because they are relying on South Basque land which has a large autonomous regime : North basque people look at South Basque TV. The case of Brittany is apart because it has no neighbouring "friends" : interceltic "!brotherhood " is quite a mirage : only Welsh people can we rely on. Scots are admiring friendshies and Irish men are looking toward the U.S. with exception of a minority working for interceltic Solidarity.
