    ------------------------------------------
    What are "Core" words?
Core vocabulary words refer to the small set of words that are most commonly used in our daily communication. These words typically include pronouns, verbs, prepositions, and adjectives. Although they make up only a small percentage of the total words in the English language, they are essential for effective communication.
For children, it is especially important to learn how to use core vocabulary words in many different contexts. This is because these words provide the foundation for all future language development. By mastering core vocabulary, children can learn to express their needs and wants, describe their experiences, ask and answer questions, and engage in meaningful conversations with others.
Moreover, research has shown that using core vocabulary words can improve a child's language skills, increase their ability to communicate with others, and enhance their overall cognitive development.
    What is AAC?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to all the methods and ways a person communicates besides talking. AAC tools and methods are essential for children and adults who have difficulty with speech or language.
Different types of AAC can include no-tech (e.g. gestures, facial expressions, sign language), low tech (e.g. pictures, symbol charts, communication boards/books, pen/paper) and high tech (e.g. iPads or tablets used for communication, other speech generating devices) tools. AAC provides individuals the ability to communicate their needs and wants, share information, express opinions, participate in social interactions, and much more!
Children who have access to AAC tools and resources are more likely to succeed in school and have better social relationships with their peers. Children can develop their language skills and learn to express themselves in a way that is comfortable and natural for them. AAC can help children develop their communication skills and build confidence in themselves.
    A common Myth about AAC:
A common misconception in AAC is that it will stop someone from learning to speak. Research shows, however, that AAC actually has POSITIVE effects on speech and language development. It does NOT stop an AAC user from learning to speak.
