Great video!! I have written with people where I always wondered how they were so good at making their lyrics HIT and this describes that super well. I’m reading a book by Jimmy Kachulis right now and he talks about another way to create a pay off on the hook is to put a cadence under it and use a different progression under your setup line. Think ‘time after time’ by Cyndi lauper as an example. Thought that went along with what you’re talking about here too. Great stuff guys
I'm still waiting on Clay's book from Amazon, but I got two from Marty and they're GREAT! Highly recommend! Thanks y'all for being so cool and sharing this info on a regular basis!
"Send me home on a one way flight, I'm coming back for good this time" Song: "Red, White and Blue". I Co-wrote this one with Paul Overstreet and Brett Boyett. Thanks for all the tips! You guys 🤘🏼!
Time. Footpaths filled with memories I can feel the summer breeze From the old house On the old block We lived a lot We saw a lot What a time What I time What a time of our lives Only one of us could survive Scribbles on the kitchen wall Disappear into the urban scawl What a time What a time of our lives…. Just the first verse and chorus.
Can/should there be more than one setup/payoff? It seems you talked mostly about setting up the hook within the chorus, but I've also heard of setting up the chorus as a whole - some lyrical precursor to the lift thats about to happen. Are these two different things or just using a "setup" in different places for effect?
You can reference the hook musically in the intro and lyrically in the first line of the first verse. It's a form of foreshadowing and can keep your story tighter.
As someone who’s put a lot of songs out into the world I can say that fortunately most people are like you and I, we want the world to hear our own thoughts and feelings. That’s why we write. If I worried about people stealing my ideas, it would kill my creativity and I’d keep all my songs locked in my basement. I don’t, I put them out into the world. After 30 years of being in the business I can say, I don't know of anyone stealing one of my songs. Write on! CM
I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I have written hundreds of songs on my TH-cam channel. How can I get a professional opinion on a couple of my songs? I get positive feedback, but you never know if people are just being nice. 🤔

After 95% of the songs getting the feedback that the hook didn't pay off, I'm glad you made this to help us out. Haha! :) Thanks
False tells men. They use prosody and versification which both trick the listeners and provide the songs rhythm. You're the best Songtown ❤
Cool to hear those references to current pop songs! JP Saxe is a great lyricist
Intersting idea about the setup line coming after the hook. Useful information as always. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

Sure, we can talk about that more in the future. Basically, a setup line sets up the hook no matter where it is in verse or chorus. Write on! CM

If I thought that I would actually get real time feedback on my songs and they wouldn’t get stolen I would so sign up for this
