I have one of the 14SB mowers ... 20 years old this year ! Regular maintenance with the exception of a new transmission belt last year ... still runs great !
I inherited my Grandfathers. It sat in his yard for years and he bought it about 10 years ago for 20 bucks at a garage sale. Its older then I am and it runs GREAT.
Great video. I love the aluminum deck Deere push mowers, maybe I'll pick one up one of these days. I just acquired a 1978 LawnBoy two-stroke push mower that needs a little TLC but I can't wait to start using it.
Those 2 stroke Lawnboys are near bulletproof. I had one at one point, but the previous owner ran straight gas in it and scored the piston and cylinder really bad, and locked the rings to the piston. I got rid of that one, sadly. But if you need a ring set, let me know.
I've got to replace the clutch on my older one too. Need to get a break wrench first to release the tension spring then get the right size allen wrench to get the bolt off. Oh yeah... and never over tighten the brass oil drainplug. I learned the hard way, but one new engine base/sump later it was good as new!
Yep. I usually just turn them a 16th to 8th of a turn once they ground out in the block. I remember on my JE75 that the drain was full of mud dobbers. That was fun.
Just made this mistake about an hour ago. Trying to figure out the fix. Don't have a good line on a manual or parts. If you've got any advice, I'm listening.
I loves these mowers Are they industrial the ones with the chrome handle bars? and how common are they to obtain? also these have Kawaski engines on them.
Neighbor just gave me 1 of these on the 4th of July. 14SB with the oil filter Kawasaki 5.0hp OHV 5 speed a Running one. I need to sharpen the blade, no bag, and that plastic insert has a hole in it. He cleaned the carb and filled the tank. He said he just didn't have any use for it. How much oil do they hold? Where can i get a new oil filter? I've seen videos about these, and apparently they're hard to come by. Also selling for $300+ when you can find them. Any idea what they cost new in the '90s? Most of the videos and blogs I've come across people are saying if you find 1 keep it forever, because they're the best push mower ever built. I've already been using it to cut my grass. Have a little over an acre. It did it on 2 full tanks of gas. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Congrats on getting one! All the parts can be found at your local John Deere dealer. They hold a little under a quart of 30 weight oil. These were built in the 90’s, and you are correct, if you have one, never get rid of it. These are the best push mowers built. I believe they went for around $500 new back 25 years ago.
I need to see exactly how the oil change works, which bolts to remove etc. Can’t find any videos anywhere, and can’t see close enough on this one. Can anyone help? Thanks!
Darker brass looking tube on left side of engine that has a bolt head on it. You will see it is open on the end. Loosen that and your oil will drain out there. Be prepared for mess.

Thanks, I'll let you know. This one is in good shape and just had the carb rebuilt, but it needs the starter pull cable fixed.

What's the trick to get the mower clutch off a sb the parts are different than jx
Noel do your self a favor and ditch the clutch. I just welded my blade adapter to the crankshaft.
Blade adapter from a 14 ST will allow you to ditch the clutch. Had to use an air chisel to get mine off the shaft.

What is the correct plug for a XB with 5.0 hp Kawasaki? Thanks bro!
Could you please tell me how to replace the drive belt?
you have to remove the clutch off the bottom of the engine to be able to get the belt around the drive pulley. Not a super easy job.
Dont waste your time w this video. 18 min of watching a guy check the oil
