    • @SpeedOfThought1111
      @SpeedOfThought1111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      wtf are you talking about?!? The name of this song is a reference to a Greek myth. Orestes is the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. While he is away, his mother kills his father. Later on, Orestes comes back to avenge his father, killing his mother and her lover, Aegisthus.
      However, breaking family ties is a terrible offense to the Erinyes, the Furies that even gods fear. They pursue Orestes around Greece, and he finds salvation in Athena’s temple, where the goddess makes a trial and acquits Orestes.

    • @chrisdunlap5482
      @chrisdunlap5482 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@SpeedOfThought1111 Hey, man. Came in a little bit hard, but you brought facts, which I respect. Every thing you said is correct, but I would like to focus on three words you said: "killing his mother". The song is more than likely a metaphor using the Orestes myth to describe the narrator's own feelings about the choice to end their mother's life. On a purely literal level, you are correct. It does refer to the Greek myth. But consider this:
      Maynard James Keenan's mother suffered an aneurysm when he was 11 years old and she was paralyzed for the rest of her life. He has used it as inspiration for numerous songs such as Jimmy, 10,000 days, and another song on this album, Judith. Judith's health would have been declining by the time he wrote these lyrics (she had been paralyzed over 30 years at that point), although she lived until 2003. You may know all this so I'm sorry if I'm over-explaining, but I just want to stress how much her struggle and his feelings on the subject matter affects his writing. Maynard has said that most of the songs he writes have a literal meaning and if you want to dig deeper, the depth is there. (paraphrased)
      Lyrically, the song starts with the words "Metaphor for a missing moment" which could indicate that the song is a stand-in for something else. I would back up the metaphor interpretation because while Orestes doubts his will to perform the act of revenge on his mother, I don't believe either he or his mother are "medicated" as the song states. I would also question if Orestes ever felt "overwhelming hostility" at the situation as he only sought to kill them at the Oracle's and Electra's behest. Also, there wouldn't be a reason to "almost hear you scream" since Electra had quieted the choir to hear Clytemnestra's death and Orestes would be able to hear his mother's cries.
      Also consider that the song doesn't tie in to most of the Orestes tale. Specifically, it uses "womb" and "umbilical residue that's keeping me from killing you" to refer to one specific moment of the story: the act of killing one's own mother. It isn't difficult to imagine the lyrics applying to being at a loved one's hospital bed side and feeling the self-doubt, anger, and guilt at having to make a decision to end their life...especially if they are the one that brought you into this world. This creates a "perfect circle".
      Perhaps in hindsight I should have worded my comment as "Many people believe the song is a metaphor comparing the myth surrounding Orestes (who killed his mother) and a semi - autobiographical narrator contemplating the strength to take their mother off of life support." I don't normally comment on videos, but I just threw a comment up there very quickly since I really love the song. I knew David isn't typically a "lyrics guy" so I just wanted to give a little personal context to one line that I truly appreciate.
      So to make what I'm saying clear: You are 100% correct and I appreciate your comment. It does add the historical and literary context of the song. But I also believe it is the author's intent to create a song that works on two levels. Feel free to disagree, you are definitely spot-on with the literal references! The beautiful thing about art at this level, is that it's open for interpretation!

      @@chrisdunlap5482 That was a very thoughtful and insightful analysis. My mistake. I've never heard this before. I knew about his mother's health issue but didn't know the details of taking her off life support. For some reason I thought she passed naturally as she had already been suffering for so long it seems a little strange to me that he didn't do it earlier I guess but I can understand the struggle.

    Hearing this live version reminds me why I love A Perfect Circle and have done ever since I first heard Magdalena in 2001. I think the first album is a classic album and for me better than Tool (who I love) Maynard has 3 fantastic bands most artists struggle to have 1 good band on the go. Orestes is a fantastic song, nuff said

    Listening to live songs, there's always the chance the band's gonna go an extra mile in their hits. But, if you paid good money to be there in the audience, you are NOT gonna complain about more Howerdel guitar lol! Even in the shadows, Maynard's harmonies still dominate, but Billy's WAYYYY underrated as a song writer. And Jeff Friedl (who also plays with Maynard in Puscifer) on drums needs FAR more recognition for his talents! Damn near every track off the album this song's from, Mer de Noms, is amazingly beautiful.

    APC has a lot of good songs, with this one being one of my personal favorites of them or any band. Melancholic instruments with vocals and lyrics to match push my fun buttons, plus the lyrics feel personal to me. "Gotta cut away, clear away, snip away and sever this umbilical residue keeping me from killing you." Maynard had to have some reason to write lyrics this personal to him that resonates so well with fans.
