A minor thing with Balan vs Nights, the human characters in Nights have a triple jump but Balan doesn't. Wild to me that the 30 seconds of human gameplay in Nights has more variety in movement than Balan Wonderworld does
uh yeah, because the levels in Balan were actually designed to be walked through. giving them that triple jump would just break the level design. the triple jump in NiGHTS is both clunky and completely useless, which is also why the kids don’t have it in Journey of Dreams
So basically, the kind of game that people don't like, but 10 years from now the only, few people who liked it enough to still remember it will be telling everyone it was a good game, so that people who haven't played it or don't remember it will look at it and say "well, I heard that game was good. must be a classic of some sort"

Well... Seems like the game wasn't what Yuji actually wanted and that he was replaced as director 6 months before Balan came out. Couldn't say anything about it until recently due to him having a lawsuit about it. It's a big shame, really.

This game has such a good style, really good worlds, amazing soundtrack (save for the ghostbusters ripoff fiasco), and yet you look at the GAME behind it and it's just strikingly... meh. I want a sequel, not to exaggerate the negatives but to make the positives shine in the way they really needed to for this kind of game to sell.
Just wanna say I absolutely love the sound editing in your videos. Like the content is interesting, you talk about interesting games and bring up interesting points. But the whole soundscape, the pacing of it, music choices, the tone of voice and silly musical interludes, are the real star for me. Even if you made a three hour essay on doorknobs I would still watch (listen?) the heck out of it.
Sonic Adventure was the perfect game for those gamestop display consoles. Within a minute you got The orca and the sun shining. It was insane to see live as a kid.

It's actually got one of the most innovative ways to use the Wii's pointer, and it sucks that it came out 4 years after it should've.

Massive NiGHTS fan here returning to this, the video that convinced me to give Balan a shot, to say: if you feel like there's some weird bit of missing lineage between NiGHTS and Balan, that's because of Journey of Dreams, the widely forgotten and kinda junky sequel on the Wii. A lot of weird design decisions in Balan make prefect sense as iterations on ideas in JoD, and no one is talking about it because I'm the only weirdo who fell in love with JoD as a kid. It's a musical comedy tv show about a two-man-band from new zealand trying to make it in new york. It's not jarring like most musicals, the music is in all different genres and actually somehow fits in the urban environments of the show. Oh, yeah, and banal wendelwind or something idk I haven't played it
I now have an unhealthy desire to hear Louis Armstrong impressions tinted with every possible human accent. I wonder if we could get Charles Martinet to combine a Mario voice with a Louis Armstrong voice. Actually looks cool, though for some reason the footage of Billy Hatcher looks better graphically. Too much bloom in this, I prefer the PS2 asthetic. But wow this music! Feels like a humble bundle monthly game though so Ill wait for it there.
Before the demo was released I somehow got this mixed up in my head with World End Syndrome because of the similar artstyle, so it wasn't a dislike of the game itself - I agree wholeheartedly with the lovely nostalgic feel of it - but I honestly thought it was one of those horror games disguised with a cute veneer for the first chapter, so I spent the whole demo waiting for the other shoe to drop and then it just... stayed wholesome. Which was great for me since I didn't want my adventure to actually be interrupted by death game shenanigans at that point, but still a bit anticlimactic. XD
