Hans von Luck discusses in his book Panzer Commander the fury he and other commanders of the 21st Panzer division felt b/cthey weren't permitted by higher HQ to immediately attack the British 6th airborne div forces trying to seize the Orne bridges. The delay was fatal.

Given the crushing air and naval artillery power of the allies any counterattack by un supported German land forces were always doomed. Imagine they did push the fighting to the beaches, battleships would have closed in and annihilated any exposed German tanks and infantry trying to attack.
The Commonwealth beaches certainly took the brunt of German counter attacks on Hitler’s personal orders. This helped tie down most of the German armoured divisions away from the US positions which would allow them to advance towards Cherbourg.
Conversely the US 1st Army giving up on St Lo in June (a June 15th objective), applying little to no pressure there, kept all the panzer divisions in the Caen sector through that entire month, including those newly arrived. This made taking Caen much more difficult.

Of all the videos re Normandy apart from being ad nauseum in number all prove one thing: Rommel was the only commander who was proven right in his assessment. Additionally the Luftwaffe would have had to at least attempt to achieve local air parity and target the ships supporting the landing. The other option would have been to blanket the landings with V2 rockets if they were operational at that time. However Rommel‘s strategy was still the most hopeful for if sufficient forces were available close to the landings in the first 24 hours then at least a repeat of the Anzio landings could have been achieved, and at best, thrown back into the sea. This would have only delayed the inevitable as the Western allies would have landed in the south ( Dragoon ) while the bulk of German forces dealt with Normandy.

I'm not disappointed by the attack. In fact I'm ecstatic that this was the best they could do. Would you rather they had been better organised, better equipped and successful in isolating Sword Beach. Because, you know, the war would have cost more lives and the camps would have killed more people.

Even if his fighters were 1:3 in numbers against allies it would have matter to distract them in fighting german armour. Also it seems they didn't have a proper plan to repell allies. Probably the french wine was their real enemy. They were all drunk and couldn't put up a proper plan

The Japanese were smarter. They knew defence of the beach was difficult. So in oikanawa they used a different tactic. They allowed the Allies to land ,let them think there were no Japanese soldiers. Then when a huge number of troops accumulated and entered the kill zones they attacked from all sides
KG Rauch should have attacked Sword from the rear once they reached the coast and attacked the landings as this would have disrupted the resupply of the beaches this would have as they should have already known stopped the landings fortunately KG Rauch did not take the initiative for even a small resistance with tanks would have stopped the invasion!
The other thing I would note on this is I believe the Germans were dealing with the Bocage. And what happened to them was a portent of what was to come for the allies across the front. Narrow lanes hemmed in by huge hedgerows. If you went into the fields you had to exit at choke points, if you stayed in the lanes there was no room for manoeuvre or deployment and there was an ambush at every corner.

The Red Army never had to face 7 panzer divisions just to get to one town. Circa 2,500 German tanks, assault guns and tank were deployed to Normandy in a very restrictive area of frontage. In contrast they only deployed around 1,300 in Operation Bagration which took place over a far larger area of frontage. The Soviets would have fared worse in Normandy, with far higher casualties. Even when defending at Kursk they still lost 4 times as many tanks as the Germans.

by this stage of war germany was scared of own shadow, incapable of taking initiative, seems crazy they go to coast only to turn around again.
