  • For this episode of the Corn School, Bernard Tobin asks Dale Cowan, senior agronomist at AGRIS C0-operative, about how much rain a corn crop needs throughout the season and about the critical times during a crop's growth that it needs that rain. Plus, once we have that knowledge, how do we manage our soils and crops to make sure we have moisture throughout the season?
"At this growth stage (six to seven leaf), roughly it's been at least four inches of rain, maybe even closer to five," says Cowan. "That's a combination of not just rain but also stored soil moisture as well."
A high yielding corn crop could consume approximately 25 inches of moisture per acre, per year, says Cowan, which is a substantial amount. By the tassel stage, the plant will have consumed about 10 inches of water, and the remaining 15 inches will be needed during the reproductive stage.

My dad told me when he was a kid on the farm. In the quiet air after a summer rain you can actually "hear" the corn growing, It can grow 4-6 inches in 24 hrs on a hot day after a good rain. It's usually "knee high by the 4th of July" is the old saying. They don't call it "natures broom" for nothing. If you eat too many at once (more than 3 I think) you can get "the bends" from stomach pain that will bend you over. Be careful...Moses

We had a severe drought in southeastern MB in 2021...and there were people discbining their corn by early August...we were fortunate to get severe hail...which came with a timely rain. Hail has blessings too. But I will always prefer timely rains.

When I was studying Soil Science back in the 1960's I learned that corn needs 60 to 80% of field capacity. For a loam soil. This is for the maximum yield. field capacity is where soil surface tension can no longer keep the water from moving down out of the root zone. On the High Plains we can make 300 bu/ac with 30" of water. About 10 bu per inch

How in the hell do you measure1, 2, 3, 4 inches of water to put on corn?? It's so easy to say oh, this vegetable needs 3 inches of rain blah blah blah, but no one tells you how to measure inches of water with a garden hose.....
