WILD SWIMMING ON THE WILD ATLANTIC WAY (The Wild Atlantic Way || Mayo & Galway)

- This week we return to the rugged west coast of Ireland, continuing our journey south along the Wild Atlantic Way.
We start the episode my taking on Ireland's most holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, led by Kevin a nice man (and now friend) we met in the pub on Achill. After summiting the misty peaks, from whence St Patrick expelled the snakes from the Emerald Isle, we drove to Westport where we joined the locals in their daily sea dips at high tide.
We left Westport following the WAW squiggles that signify our onward route. We stay at Old Head and wake to a day of stunning weather. We slowly wake with a stroll and coffees on the beach looking over the mountain we had climbed in the rain.
Leaving Old Head southward along the coast we we spectacular mountains and stop at beautiful beaches. The wild swim in Westport obviously gave us the swimming bug because again we decide to brave the seas, only this time we go skinny-dipping on one of the most beautiful beaches we have yet been to.
Refreshed we head back to the van and head inland to pass through the Doolough Valley cutting between the beautiful mountains of southern Mayo.
We then visit Aasleagh waterfall on the banks of Killary Fjord. This incredible fjord is the border between Mayo and Galway, and so we finds ourselves passing into the Connemara region of Galway.
With the short days drawing in we find ourselves in a perpetual sunset as we skit around the bottom of mountains and through deep valleys, arriving at Anchor beach in time to enjoy the moon rise.
Realising it is still early we make the short drive to Clifden to do laundry but return to Anchor Beach to spend the night.
The next day we wake and enjoy a leisurely morning, enjoying a coffee and fresh croissants on a pristine beach. We decide to backtrack in order to hike up Diamond Hill. Unfortunately, the weather decides to roll and and we do not get the views we were hoping for, but enjoy the hike none the less.
After our hike we drive to Omey Island, this island can be reached at low tide by driving along the exposed sea bed. In a mad dash we drive headfirst into what Google maps tells us is the Atlantic Ocean and over onto Omey Island. After a short time on the island we realise that with Isabel's work schedule that if the tide comes in we would not be able to leave the island for three days, so we turn tail and make another dash across the sands.
With Isabel working the next two days we decide it is time to find a spot where we can make camp for this time, so we head on to the Sky Road where we find Eyrephort beach. Here Isabel works and I edit the video, but in our free time we escape the van to jump into the Atlantic yet again.

Its great to see our English neighbours enjoying and appreciating the beautiful landscape in the West of Ireland. I'm glad to hear that everyone is welcoming and friendly. Its quite normal here for complete strangers to strike up conversation. Love the video and commentary.

It is good to speak again, even if it is only through the TH-cam comments. You will have to thank St Anthony for us, straight after meeting you our GoPro batteries showed their heads. We travel these roads every august for two weeks. We start in Enniscrone in Sligo then on to achill and we work our way down to letterfrack/clifden area. Some if the hidden beaches are stunning. Very clean and safe. Brilliant video. Such a great way to clear the head and recharge the batteries.
What a fantastic stretch, I can see why you keep coming back to it. The beaches in Connemara are incredible, and there is one around every little corner. I have never seen the sea so clear, it was like bottled water so beautiful

We managed to get a bit of sunshine briefly yesterday, and made the most of it. You will need to wait for next week to see that though. Glad we are doing the west justice, it is truly amazing!

They say Ireland is like a saucer in that most of the mountain ranges rise around the coast, and it is much flatter in the middle. Coastal mountains is an epic mix. Enjoy thd rest if your Ireland trip
That's interesting we hadn't heard the saucer analogy. We are loving the coastal mountains though, such a sticking visual!

The Connemara trail is probably the most hauntingly beautiful road I’ve ever driven on and it’s tragic history makes it all the more humbling
I totally agree, the history of the whole area is so sad. I feel like I don't know it well enough to be teaching it in the videos to be honest, I did read all about it on the WAW signs and a bit on Google. Even Omey island housed multiple family's and a driving community. Reminds me a lot of the abandoned villages of the Highland clearances in Scotland

Get vid, very nice footage and editing, and love the amazement you're getting from the West. I knew you'd enjoy the drive to Leenaun. Shame the sun didn't shine for you on your climb up the Reek, all the same you're getting lucky with the weather. Enjoy the county of the Tribes.
Every corner we round we are blown away by the landscape. That road to Leenaun is really special. The weather has been great, even the rainy days, have sunny spells and we have been making the most of them. The misty mountains are a shame but we can't complain really, just happy we have had any sun at all.

Yeah the weather has been unbelievably good. I do think that in a van you're in a good position to make the most of all and every little window of good weather, but yeah this has been so much better than expected.

FYI to all.. The waterfall is where the Oscar nominated & BAFTA wining movie "The Field" was filmed with Richard Harris, John hurt, Sean Bean & Tom Berenger.

I will need to rewatch that film, I think I last saw that when I was very young. Cycling through this landscape must be amazing, traveling that bit slower and getting the endorphins from exercise. Absolutely fantastic. Glad you're enjoying the vlogs.
