  • Oh the struggle is real - After embroidering for a while and feeling confident in my abilities to add a monogram to almost anything I had a customer drop off 6 shirts for their upcoming wedding events! Oh I was stumped - these shirts were hard and puckered like crazy - Watch to see how I solved the problem and was finally proud of my work!

Thank you - I also find that if you cut your stabilizer with pinking shears - it doesn't show on the right side as a line around the monogram

Yes, lots of stabilization is the trick. I interfaced duck cloth with medium interface and two pieces of cutaway stabilization to ensure the embroidery laid flat and nicely. My machine's manual actually says use two pieces of stabilization.

Well done and thanks for helping us newbies, but that is a LOT of stabilizer. How much do you charge for each shirt? I live in South America and access to good quality stabilizers is expensive and cumbersome. I treasure every inch I own, especially the no-show mesh and wash-away kind as it is only available from the US. I understand the need for good quality work but how do you balance cost?

Help! I bought some of this spray adhesive and both of my machines ended up in the shop. It would cause the needle to become sticky and then the thread frayed and broke getting stuck in the machine. Not realizing what it was doing I continued to sew and fight with the thread. Eventually the knotting from the fraying bent the spring at the guide above the needle. It was so bad it completely locked up one of my machines.

Just hoop the no show mesh and use a temporary adhesive spray to float the silk in the hoop. I would test the fabric and see if you could also baste the silk in the hoop just to make sure it doesn't move. Some very sheer silk would show the basting holes so a test is a must.

I’m just seeing this now, so I don’t know if you are still looking at any comments, but I am curious as to the way you hooped this. Because you were working across the front half of the shirt, you obviously could not get the fabric completely in the hoop that you were using. So why didn’t you either use a much smaller hoop, enabling you to hoop the fabric completely or, if that was not possible, why didn’t you hoop the fabric vertically so that you would have the entire shirt fabric within the hoop, enabling you to get that fabric completely taut. Then you could’ve just turned your design and still been able to have your vertical monogram. You still may have needed additional stabilizer, but perhaps not as much as you ended up using. Not having all four sides around the monogram completely within the hoop and completely taught certainly may have contributed to the puckering that you initially experienced.

All of my embroidery is done with a 75/11 sewing needle, even with metallic threads. You get a much finer perforating of the fabric and I have always gotten great results. I even use this needle when embroidering on vinyl, leather and cork.

Cutaway is totally unsuitable for such a sheer shirt. You would see it through the fabric and the no show mesh cutaway which is sheer and doesn't show through is not stable enough to provide the same level of stabilization. That's why she used two layers.

Thicker backing would be visible from the front of the shirt so no show mesh is the appropriate stabilizer and you would definitely need two layers. Also 30 years in the business.
