The Royal Palace at Königsberg was originally an old Prussian fort. During the 16th to 18th centuries the castle was greatly enlarged and fortified. The fortress, later designated a castle, was the residence of the Grandmasters of the Teutonic Order and later residence for Prussian rulers. The west wing contained the Schloßkirche, or palace church, where Frederick I was crowned in 1701 and William I in 1861.
Following the bombing of Königsberg by the Royal Air Force in the Second World War in 1944, the castle completely burnt down. However, the thick walls were able to withstand both the aerial bombing and Soviet artillery, as well as urban fighting in April 1945, allowing the ruins of the castle to stay standing. The largely demolished Königsberg became part of the Soviet Union and was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946................
It's a shame this old beautiful castle be replaced by this modern building .

+fabianoasc Thank you very much for your visit and great comment. The destruction of the castle was a tragedy. But so many ancient and historical buildings were lost all over Europe during this war....
Not to mention all the contents of these buildings; the art work, the furnishings, jewelry, glass work, etc, etc. Items that had been around for centuries, all gone forever.
Thanks for the photos especially the interior ones. The craftsmanship on those vaulted ceilings is incredible. Always shows what once was and could have continued if alternative decisions could have been made.

Interesting comments by those who decry the destruction of the beautiful old architecture and its replacement by the conqueror. (Truly a “conqueror,” not a “liberator.”) It is the inevitable result of war-one of the reasons we decry wars, for the results of war are rarely entirely satisfactory. Let that be the lesson of this beautiful and sad video.

Дааа,в старом Кёнигсберге был тот самый прусский дух,военный дух,германский. То,что называется "старая добрая Пруссия". Ну,глядя на современные города понимаю,что останься он немецким или если бы его отдали Польше он бы может сохранился получше,но этот дух всё равно потерял,по крайней мере частично. Это можно понять глядя на такие города как Щецин (Польша) или подобные города в Германии. Короче,я русский но все же меня восхищают виды старого Кёнигсберга. Кирпичные башни и стены прекрасны,суровые здания.

The German-Soviet War was so radical and cruel that when the Soviets entered Germany they were so angry that they destroyed everything. Viewed from today it is sad but at the time understandable. The Nazis had planned to destroy and colonize Russia... Just hope for peace between Russia and the rest of Europe.

Монументальный был замок!!! Я в детстве помню как кайзер стоял у моста!!! И на развалинах Канта лазили))) Англия разбомбила уникальный город!!
Поляки же восстановли же полностью уничтоженную Варшаву и даже Юнеске включил в список исторического наследия, а вот руская орда полностью уничтожила остатки и понапихала панельки хрушевки

Я смотрел на фотографии послевоенного Калининграда, когда я наткнулся на эти замка. Я думал, что их так хорошо, я должен был разделить.....

Muy triste el contraste, pero objetivo. El adefesio arquitectónico que lo sustituye da mucha pena, al igual que el anuncio de una empresa coreana en el fondo de una de las fotografías. Conservo un ejemplar de la edición de 1924 de las fotografías de Kurt Hielscher (Copyright de Ernst Wasmuth Ag, Berlin 1924), luego de ver el vídeo he contrastado algunas imágenes del castillo y la ciudad, todas preciosas. Prusia Oriental está muerta, la única forma de resaltar su legado es que las autoridades rusas pongan de su parte, y bueno, viendo a Putin no me sorprendería que con su propaganda antieuropea fomentara la destrucción y profanación de los pocos rastros de presencia alemana en Kaliningrado.
Muy distinto es el caso de Polonia, que Warmia y Masuria realmente conserva bastante bien el antiguo paisaje prusiano.

And the world of architechture is glad with you poles, Stettin, Danzig, Breslau, Allenstein and many other cities (I would write them with their polish names but the are way harder to writte than German lol) these cities are practically the same than pre war times and that's nice since history of both countries remain.

Königsberg should be given back to Germany. It is homeland of germans..
But Koenigsberg is dead. No German would like to move there to restore the German city. Not to speak that it is now an entirely Russian city. It is forever lost for Germany, like Viipuri is for Finland or Lwow and Wilno for Poland.

а кто руины эти оставил не скажешь? коммунисты или может британские бомбы? СССР после разрушительной войны нужно было страну собирать и всю восточную европу на горбу тащить...не до восстановления было...благо почти ничего сделать было ..целые кварталы были в руинах ...
@@user-pm8ci9mt1k После Второй мировой войны на месте руин Королевского замка эпизодически проводились раскопки. В 1969 году по решению первого секретаря обкома КПСС Николая Коновалова развалины замка были взорваны, несмотря на множество протестов.
Однако территория замка остаётся незастроенной, и вопрос о систематических археологических раскопках этого памятника XIII века остаётся открытым. Городская администрация в 2010 году предлагала провести весной 2011 года референдум о необходимости восстановления замка .До сих пор одни разговоры. Не нужно было "присоединять" к себе Кёнигсберг,Прибалтику,Карелию и "братскую" Восточную Европу и " на горбу тащить",А ты :"кто разбомбил?". Побеждённая Германия отстроила свои разрушенные города
Американцы и англичане которые разбомбили красивый город были коммунистами😀
