This time, we will feature YUSHOKU Kyoto doll maker, YOSHIYUKI OHASHI.
It is said that Hina dolls began to be displayed in the Edo period.
In Kyoto, it is customary to display OBINA on the right and MEBINA on the left.
This originated from a court ritual in which a gentleman always faces south and sits on the east side of the sun.
The main character this time is YOSHIYUKI OHASHI, the 3rd generation of OHASHI-IPPOU, a YUSHOKU Kyoto doll master who has been in Nishijin for 90 years.
Senbon Demizu, Kamigyo Ward, where he has his workshop and store, is on the north side of Daigokuden, where the emperor performed important national ceremonies, including the enthronement ceremony, during the Heian period.
His grandfather trained under Kyoto doll makers since the Genroku era of the Edo period.
His grandfather became independent in 1932 as 'YUSHOKU Kyoto doll maker'.
"YUSHOKU Kyoto doll maker" is a craftsman who realistically reproduces court culture in dolls based on the knowledge of the traditional events and ceremonies of the nobility.
OHASHI's doll making begins with selecting Nishijin woven cloth and custom-ordering it.
Each part is a traditional craft.
I will build it with a balance that has been thought out to the details.
His prop making is also full-fledged.
I want to bring more people the topic of Hina dolls by adding seasonal ideas and trend words every day.
In recent years, together with his staff, he has been using JIROZAEMON-HINA as the character of the studio to share behind-the-scenes stories about doll making and annual events on social media.
For him, Hina dolls are time capsules that connect various thoughts.
We will approach making OHASHI dolls based on the production process.
