  • What a terrific afternoon at Ronnie's place to lend a hand with restarting his really cool 1948 Norton ES2 500cc single-cylinder motorcycle.
    It's such a pleasure to see and hear these old bikes burst into life again!
    Ronnie had completed several jobs, preparing it for the attempt to restart it. We had a few of the guys over to offer a hand.
    It cuts out in the video as we turned the gas off after realizing that the carb was leaking pretty badly. A carb kit will be ordered and the carb rebuilt before trying again. There are also a few little jobs to complete to get the bike road-ready.
    Added bonus was a ride in his awesome Studebaker Lark VIII !
    Buy me a coffee? ☕ 😉

    I had an ES2 in the late sixties and used it to ride down from Edinburgh to London. Used it for commuting to the office daily in London then rode it back to Edinburgh after my work in London ended. One issue I had with the bike was the exhaust would sometimes pop out of the cylinder head which was not good! It did this on the way up to Edinburgh. Managed to tie the exhaust on with wire to get me home! :-)

    This is why bikers live long, they're happy in the smallest things, even that can be a friend's bike getting fired. So glad that you folks are together and have fun with bikes, I wish I was a part of this. God bless the gang.

    Very nice motorcycle! Great kickstarting action!! Little tip, you'll find it FAR easier to start if you straddle the bike and kick it over. You will have the benefit of your body weigt while kicking, and have more feeling with your motorbike. Give it a try and please post a video showing how it works out for you. Thank you.

      Thanks a lot guys. Yes, this was literally the first time that he kicked it and he's used to kickstarting a Norton Commando. I'm sure once he has figured out how to use the valve lifter / compression lever, it will be pretty easy to start. I tried myself and there wasn't too much compression even without the lever. Thanks for your advice. Cheers, Mike

    My kickstart 1967 XLCH routine was to put left knee on the seat & kick with the right. I found it less likely to injure myself on kickback.
    By the way after a complete restoration it started 1st kick after a prime kick of course.

      Perfect, thanks Larry. Yes, this was the first time he had kicked it so I'm sure he will get the knack of it soon. Cheers, Mike

    My Dad bought me a secondhand one of these for around £4 if I remember correctly. I used to ride it all over the Isle of Sheppey. I was 15 at the time! ( 1947 etched on the Crank Case ).

    Marvellous to see it start up and what a noise! That's guaranteed to upset the neighbours. Tip of the day: Don't do this early on a Sunday morning.

      Hehe, yes it's a wee bit too loud. it's some new exhaust that he's going to change to a more original (and quieter) note ;)

    • @54macdog
      @54macdog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Noooo! The exhaust sounds great, especially on the over run. Hey, every Harley sounds like the bloody silencer has been taken off altogether, so why not a little Norton?

    Fantastic bike and well done, im a Norton nut and have a few, you will find it better if you straddle the bike to kick it, having said that for an ES2 it sounds as if you have a high compression engine or piston or a hot camshaft in her so dont expect a slow even tickover, either way she sounds awsum!!

    Great bike - so he hasn't restored it, just done a few jobs? Has it previously been restored? How long has it been sitting idle? So exciting to see/hear it fire up.

      Hi John. Yes, it has previously been restored but then has stood for some time. I don't know much about the bike but hope to do a feature on it again soon once Ronnie has sorted out a few little issues to get it idling, etc. Hope to share more again soon. Cheers, Mike

    Now THAT'S what a gentleman's motorcycle is supposed to look like! Sublime!
    Quick question: Would that happen to be one of those Harbor Freight 1000 lbs. motorcycle lifts modded with one of their 'Economy Motorcycle Wheel Chocks'? If so, what's the verdict? I've been thinking of splurging on one next time they go on sale for my own '67 Norton N15CS's forthcoming resurrection. It's getting harder than it used to be to haul my bones up off the floor every time I need to go rummage for some tool.

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bill, yes, it's a HF lift. I also have one as well as many guys in the club. The general opinion is that they are really great value for money. I use mine all the time and it's great. They have 2 height settings for working on the bike. If I could make a couple of recommendations. 1 - I would pay for shipping and have it shipped into your garage. They are quite heavy and it would be quite an effort to load even for 2-3 guys. I paid about $60-$70 extra I think to have it shipped but it was worth it. It also comes assembled when you have it shipped. Otherwise, you have to assemble it yourself! 2- I would buy the more expensive chock, again from HF and throw away the chock that it comes with as it really isn't very good! I found that the lift really improved my productivity!! Good luck!!
