I had my hand held Garmin since early 90's. Invested in another hand portable Garmin with moving chart. I have yet another one in my boat combined with depth/fish finder. I stil use map or chart and compass as well. Best

Those simple garmins really do work! The phones are not weather resistant to really be considered reliable and the battery of most of them simply doesn't last. An etrex 10 got me out of a sticky situation at one time when I was much less experienced with the mountains.

Got into Geocaching to expose my 3 boys to something outdoors instead of sitting around playing video games all day, we enjoyed it and had a blast. My one son is still into it, and I just purchased a new Garmin 22X to get back into it myself.

Most smart phones do have a real GPS radio in them, but the problem is that most phones will rely on having a cell data or wifi signal in order to show you the map tiles. You can go into google maps and download maps ahead of time so they will work off line, but they only stay on your phone for 30 days. So like you said it is kinda complicated.

Have thought about geocaching a few times but never got into it. Looks like it could be fun.

Thanks for the video. I have a couple Garmin GPSs, I think they are great. I've noticed also that the GPS on my iPhone doesn't always work, the dedicated GPS always works,(as long as you're outside, lol). Sometimes I'll play around with both just to see how they compare. Geocaching is a lot more easy and convenient with the phone, although the Garmin may be a bit more accurate. Thanks again

I found a cache hidden in the middle of the woods years ago and had no idea what it was. Figuring it contained money, I was profoundly disappointed when I opened it and only saw a small notebook and some chewing gum.

the funnest entries in the little cache logs that ive read are the ones written by folks who found the cache by accident without ever knowing what geocaching was.
