"It's a festival, a festival! A spicy summer song! It's a festival, a festival! A crazy summer dance! Make some noise! Make some noise! Make some noise! Yo PA PA YA boys! Do a dance! Do a dance! Do a dance! PA PA PA PA YA girls! PA PA YA! PA PA YA!"
Hi Hollywood and Smokey! Good reaction! "PA PA YA" is a simple fun summer party song. While Su sings about a "spicy summer song" and a "crazy summer dance", Fucking Hero raps about making papaya salad and going to the pool. This was indeed in Japan on the second day of their Yokohama Arena performance in mid 2019, both days were sold out 20,000 person crowds. This is the studio audio over the performance video though, the music video was released only a couple days after the performance!
So I want to tell this story because I think it's important. "PA PA YA" was supposed to be unveiled at Yokohama Arena, however the song was leaked by some Russian music sites and the fans got it a week before the performance. Nobody had any idea who F.Hero was, and this was literally the first time a BABYMETAL track was out in the wild with a featured artist, so it wasn't long before the internet sleuths found his twitter and instagram. Some fans didn't like that a rap part was added to a BABYMETAL song and started sending him hate messages on how he ruined the song and that he had no business on a BABYMETAL track. F.Hero is really popular in Thailand, but he didn't really have any exposure internationally and he was super excited to work with an international group like BABYMETAL but he was getting so much hate online that he was doubting himself and he almost didn't perform at the concert. After he performed however, he said he started getting lots of praise online from all over the world, 10x as much as any hate he got before, and the hate stopped. The moral of the story: haters gonna hate, ignore them!

I think you were spot on when you said "They may react differently to music than they do to sport". Because the Japanese crowds for music (and especially rock/metal music) are known for being INSANE. I do not follow sports enough to know wether that's different for that type of crowd but I can imagine it would be. The Japan concerts for BABYMETAL are absolute fire. The crowd there always gets so hyped that they put western crowds to absolute shame. And if you don't believe me, watch BABYMETAL at Metrock... You guessed right.
This was from a June 29th, 2019 concert in Yokohama Arena, in Yokohama Japan.
The song had it's world debut the night before.
Since this was the second of two nights at Yokohama Arena, the crowd knew to bring towels to wave, or to get one at the merch stands.
I was amazed that they were able to put a very similar stage setup together in L.A. last October for the LA Forum show.
That was the album release concert for 'Metal Galaxy', the third album, and their first arena show in the USA.
Even in Japan, I don't think you can compare BABYMETAL crowds to anything else. : )
Unfortunately their March 22nd concert in Thailand was postponed because of the Corona virus.
    F. HERO had been scheduled as a special guest for that show.

There is a good interview of F.Hero on Reddit on his recruitment and experience doing this performance. At first he didn't believe they wanted him. He wrote his rap and they flew him and his wife (business class) to Japan, putting them a 4 star hotel. He still had doubts, but was told when the Japanese say it's going to happen it does. He was also amazed at the efficiency of the crews in the setting up and tear down. Said he was on and off stage in 3 minutes. The only thing was he doesn't say much about the girls. Sure he met them but likely no conversation. I believe Su and Moa are heavily protected.

Two things the Thai language is tonal meaning that one word can have up to five different meanings and each separate meaning depends on the tone of that word so really artist like FHero is incredibly hard to rap like that but Thai is such an easy language so being an easy language helps understand what he is saying. Second, at 6:09 you can see Moa do traditional Ram Thai dancing, they actually included traditional hand gestures and style which I think is so cool because it is really hard to do and I've never seen a major artist use it in this way. This song and video have a lot to unpack and yes it is Papaya because they are singing about Papaya salad which is incredibly spicy hot but also cool to eat, best eaten on hot days to make yourself feel "cooler". So the song is about chilling by the beach eating Papaya salad and doing what girls do in the summer.

Not only in Tokyo or Yokohama, this is "logical" because you´re talking about a huge city with a lot of millions of people. Even Yokohama can "sound" like a small town if you compare with Tokyo, but in fact Tokyo and Yokohama are so close that you can think in only one huge city.
Also in Hiroshima Babymetal concerts are huge, because Hiroshima is where Suzuka was born and this city really love her.

I have to admit, I‘m not into Rap (sorry) and I had my share of reservations when I first heard about this song. But now it’s one of the songs I look forward to the most during a live show. The energy is just fantastic, and the whole song is genuinely BABYMETAL. I don’t think any other band could make this work.
Whenever you see them play for such huge crowds, it’s almost certainly in Japan. I don’t have the exact numbers, but the only shows with crowds of 10000+ in the West would probably be Wembley and The Forum (not counting festivals). I don’t know much about Japanese crowds in other areas, but the BABYMETAL fans are crazy. I‘d almost say I‘m a fan of those fans. You don’t see a single person slacking off. Hi. I'm a Thai who speak English and understand some easy Japanese.
The song are kinda like "It's festival, It's summer, Let's dance wildly, Play hard, Make a noise"
The F.Hero rap part... It's not much of meaning if I translate it literally. It kinda like "Be it Rap, Thai traditional folk song, or rock. It has to be mixing, blending, pounding. So it became juicy, hot and spicy like Thai's papaya salad." But many lyrics are quite random gibbering of Thai word that ryhm with Japanese words.
*Papaya salad "Somtum" or "Papaya Pok-Pok" is an easy dish where you put teen papaya (sour), garlic, peanuts, chili pepper, lime lemon, tomato, salted dry shrimp or crab, and maybe other vegetable all together in a mortar. And pound them until the juice came out and mixing together. Very spicy dish. It's random, But it's pounding, and it's spicy just like the song.

Hi guys! Another great reaction. There is reason why BABYMETAL concerts feel so energetic: since the girls don't interact with the crowd (aside from call and responses), the interaction is built into the songs, especially on the first two albums. Moametal (and Yuimetal when she was still with the group) does chants (known as kakegoe in Japanese) that call the crowd to collective action. For example, in Megitsune, they would shout "sore" , which very roughly translates to "Let's go!". They also engage in chants known as ainote, which are chants that occur between the lines of the lead singer; "pa pa ya" is an example of this. Ainote are commonly used in Japanese pop music; in fact, the crowd often uses their own (commonly a simple "hey") during the opening or the bridge of a song. The last way they involve the crowd is through the choreography. You'll notice that crowd swings their towels when Moametal and Kano swing their arms.
Anyway, I am happy that you guys are enjoying BABYMETAL. This song was done at Yokohama Arena with 17,000 people last summer. It is one of my favorite concerts from them; it is so good to see them having such a great time after such a difficult 2018.

Put it this way if you love her on Papaya, and I do, you will love her even more on BMC (BABY Metal Cypher). She is in beast mode on that song.
Now, from what I have researched the song only appears as one of two bonus tracks on the Japanese version of Metal Galaxy. (Papaya also appears on that album.) Which was released fall, 2019. You can, however find the video here on TH-cam.

I'm always amazed by these young women dance during the songs. I get tired walking to the mailbox. They dance throughout every song for the entire concert. Choreographed dances the entire time. World class musicians backing them. Just watch a few of their videos. Everyone is like this. They dance the entire time.

A music critic that went to one of their big shows ones said: "as much pyro as a Rammstein show"
And Rammstein is probably considered the band with the most pyrotechnics in the world. :-)
Atlanta Masquerade ? Babymetal started in smaller venues than that, I assume you did too of course.

As a big BM and Rammstein fan, is that true though? I feel like Rammstein still has a shit ton of pyrotechnics especially with their recent 2019 & 2020 tour.

    • @autohmae
      @autohmae 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mikays7059 when you get into the details, it's a bit more nuanced. Of course it is of an exaggeration. Which I why I mentioned: journalist said. It's the case Babymetal uses a lot, but for less songs. Watch Babymetal Akatsuki at Wembley Arena as an example. I remember feeling that wave of heat from... pretty far away. :-) The journalist was talking about Babymetal at SSA 2015 if you want to judge yourself, you'd have to compare it to Rammstein 2013 or 2014 at similar size venue to judge it obviously.

The Tokyo Dome concert from 2016 they had puts this stage to shame. They recently dropped that entire concert on their channel for a #StayHome event, but it has already been taken down. They are dropping the concert from Wembley tomorrow, but it won't be the same stage.

The girls are big fans of the band so its not supprising they used the same stage set-up.
Four double stacked scissor lifts (8 total lifts) on a Versa Mobilator track system with show control all supporting 25,000 lbs. of effects for BABYMETAL at The Forum in LOS ANGELES 10-11-2019.
The music gods saw fit to reunite BABYMETAL with legendary metal group Metallica at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage!
Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.
NOTE- THIS VIDEO IS NOT FROM THE LOS ANGELES SHOW,BUT THE STAGE IS THE SAME SET-UP

As a fan of BOTH BABYMETAL and Wrestling, and having traveled to Japan for a month and participated in such shows, you're totally spot on!
The crowd at New Japan Pro Wrestling shows are very calm, they only start to get really excited like in the last 5 minutes of a match, when it gets really intense xD
While if you go to any Japanese concert, not only in Metal (even if it's where they go totally nuts the most) but also in J-pop shows and such, they're so intense, it's pretty damn wild ahah.
I wouldn't say they're as brutal in the pit as the crowds can be here in Europe, it's just a different kind of crazy :p

  • @rikkubeans

Lamb of God's guitarist made a comment about playing in Japan. I think it was Willie who said that Japanese crowds are some of the craziest people when a song is on, but the moment the song is done, they clap and settle down. Then is starts all over again.

I know this is 2 years later, so you might not even see this, and I'm not sure if it was mentioned yet, but the video you watched was from a creator on TH-cam who does amazing compilation videos of Babymetal. So the footage comes from a handful of different concerts over the years and might not all be in Japan. If you really pay attention you'll notice the wardrobe and set changes. The person who does these edits them so well, they usually can't even tell. You can really tell with some of their older songs as they'll edit some of their earlier performances with some of their latest. So all members of Babymetal, past and present, are in the video. It's cool stuff.
