I didn’t understand why A was the answer for the third-quarter moon question.

Hi Jacqui!
Whenever the Sun, Earth, and Moon make a right angle, you’ve a quarter moon. You can look back at 5:17 to see Dr. M. walk through the diagram.
But where it gets a little trickier is whether that’s a 1st quarter moon or a 3rd quarter moon. Based on the graphic at 5:17, it looks like the image for choice A is a 1st quarter moon, and there isn’t a correct answer offered.
Since we’re taking a 3-D process and trying to make it 2-D, some graphics show first quarter on side of Earth and some show it on the other, it just depends on perspective. The good news is that we’ve never seen a question where you need to choose between a 1st quarter or 3rd quarter moon. If it asks for a quarter moon, any quarter moon, there should only be one answer choice that shows a quarter moon and that's your correct answer. Hope that helps!
