One thing I find hilarious and interesting is that the each incarnation of Blackadder gets increasingly smarter each season but loses social stature/wealth, while Baldrick just gets dumber and dumber. LOL.
Baldrick in 1st season blackadder was smart, and blackadder was a pathetic spineless idiot...from season 2 onwards, Baldrick was the idiot and Blackadder was the smart one
This episode possibly contains more specifically British references and concepts than any other episode. I salute any non-Brit navigating it!
absolutely
Splendid
I'm British and I barely understand some of it.
@@stewmott3763 you’re not the only one man
Most of what I know about British history, I learned from this show.
10:17 They were a real phenomenon before Queen Victoria; some of them didn't even have a resident population.
11:12 Window tax was a real thing.
19:07 In reality the Pitts were Tories, not Whigs.
30:47 George IV was not only a notorious spendthrift, he was also the most self-indulgent king since Henry VIII.
I know it's 11 months late, but William Pitt the Elder was Whig, his son was a Tory. Robert Pitt, the father of Pitt the Elder was also a Tory.
After this series don't forget to watch Blackadder's Christmas Carol. It's a one off Christmas special which is every bit as good as all of the main series.
No one can do an "annoyed stare" like Rowan Atkinson.
7:46 I think that man was an actual BBC new announcer at the time.
Prince George is my favourite character. I love how stupidly stupid he is. I was sad not to see:
Bladder: “300, to be sure, at £1000 each.”
Prince: “£300,000?!”
Bladder: “£400,000, I think you’ll find.”
Prince: “…er…yes.”
The young prime minister actually existed, William Pitt the younger was a Prime minister in 1783 at the age of 24.
And yes, Brad Pitt is a descendent of them.
@@mermaidman1985 Really? That would explain why his first name is William.
You will recognise Hugh Laurie playing the prince as Dr House from 'House' - I imagine everyone will mention this! And yes, Stephen Fry will pop up soon!
Just shows how good an actor he is - cheers
Saved me the bother of saying 'look it's House!', so thanks.
Oops, said it anyway! :-)
@@briz1965 I couldn't watch "House." I just could not take him seriously in it and was always waiting for a joke.
It’s depressing how little he was known in america before house, he’s been a British institution since the 80’s
They killed everyone at the end of the first season which set the pattern. But what you said about a it being wacky and they didn't have a Time machine was hysterical! because in the Blackadder: Back & Forth show (2000) they do use a Time machine! You definitely should watch that too. Enjoying all the British shows! Thanks for the laughter.
You'll love the Dictionary episode, best one of the series.
You'll be anaspeptic, phrasmotic, even compunctious to have caused Josh such periconbobulations.
Sausage!?!
The actors. The Scottish play. The stance. Lord Byron.
Ahhhhh, Blackadder 🤗 How wonderful when a tv series like this appears out of nowhere. Thank Goodness for genius writers and actors !!! 👍🥰
Both Stephen Fry & Tim McInnerny (Percy) have guest spots later on in the season as different characters.
Not forgetting Miranda Richardson, of course.
On Percy’s absence.
After Blackadder II: it wasn’t expected that they’d make another series as the writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton had some sort of falling out and Ben Elton was very busy with career commitments.
So in 1986; Tim McInnery, who had played Percy in the first two Blackadder’s, decided to commit himself to some film for early 1987. Allegedly; Curtis and Elton weren’t initially aware and when they got on with writing Blackadder III, wrote most of the series with the Percy character, but then found out about the actor and had to write him out, which is why many of the stories in Blackadder III are a bit light and seem a bit unfinished.
The actor does reappear in the Blackadder goes forth, but playing a different recurring character.
But he played the Scarlet Pimpernel character? Also, in what way do the stories seem light and unfinished? Insane comment.
@@rumourhats yeah.
One of my favourite episodes, The standing at the back dressed stupidly party and Ivor biggun is genius.😂
The Prince Regent famously spent £1 million on the Royal Pavilion in Brighton while his father the King was being treated for the mental effects of Porphyria. Prompting the popular rhyme, "Lock up the King? NO! Lock up the Pavilion, lest it cost us another million."
I'm not sure how deliberate this is, but with each season, Blackadder's social station drops, his intelligence rises and his grim acceptance of the inevitability of disappointment increases. Almost as if the three criteria are linked.
It's almost as if it's a subtle thematic arc which spans across all the series and specials. It's a nice way to make it appear as if it's the same person with a character development across all series, even though they're different people.
Stephen Fry, Miranda Richardson and Tim McInnerny appear in one episode each as different characters from Blackadder II.
This is the season in which the show really comes into its own. (The fourth is even better, but this one sets the bar pretty high!) It relies much more on wordplay than the previous two. You might struggle with some of the British historical references, but hopefully they won't be too much of an obstacle.
The fourth is the worst.
@@christiandaugherty6339 No it isn't
I think 2 and 3 are the peaks (3 is probably objectively better than 2, but 2 was the one I started with so I'll always prefer it). 4 is okay, sometimes very good, but the strain of repetition was starting to show: there's only so many jokes you can make about the size of Baldrick's brain.
This sir , is my Fav episode of ALL of them. The shady dealings and casual cheating was indeed a feature of the 18 and 19th century and they play it up to the max, love it 👍🏴
My favourite series by a million miles.
This was never my favourite episode, but that was actually a lot better than I remembered it; last time I watched was 20+ years ago when I was 17. My fave in this series is easily the last one with Stephen Fry. "Shout; shout; and shout again."
BAAHH!
There is a time travel Blackadder - Blackadder Goes Back and Forth :)
George the IV when he was prince regent was one of the biggest spenders in royal history 🤣
I love series three, but The Duke of Wellington episode is my favourite, i think you'll really enjoy that one too!
Tony Robinson who played Baldrick is now a ‘Sir’ in reality life.
Ironically, knighted by Prince William... Father of Prince George!
ooooooooo ahhhhhh your gonna love these mate, really brilliant all round
Just to explain a few of the more obvious "British History" gags in the episode:
The Pitt the Even Younger thing is a joke about these two Prime Ministers:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt,_1st_Earl_of_Chatham
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt_the_Younger
Back then the Vote was basically similar to the way it worked in America: You needed to own land to vote. But in America most people owned a small plot of land somewhere, in the UK it was a lot rarer, most people rented. Plus Lords didn't vote because the House of Commons was the representative body of the non-aristocratic parts of society, Lords didn't need to vote because they where represented in the House of Lords (the US equivalent would roughly be the Senate, while the Commons is more like Congress) by themselves.
Prince George is the son of George III who, as Blackadder points out at one point, lost the American colonies and became Regent of the United Kingdom when George III went mad, and was viewed as a bit of extravagant playboy. Hence "son of a sauerkraut sucking loon" (George I, II, III, and IV where from the House of Hannover, ie they where from Germany).
The crumpet thing is basically a jab at the ritual bullying that was systematic in British Public Boarding Schools.
Still can't get over the fact that Hugh Laurie went on afterwards to play Dr Greg House
Yes, the Prince Regent was known for spending vast sums on frivolities. He is the fourth of the Georges in this song:

personally my favorite seanon. my parents had a DVD of this and I watched it so much.
Best season of blackadder. Great writing perfect acting. None of the heavy handed preachiness like season 4
Season 4 is my fave but Hugh does a great job in this
You may know the actor who played the Prince and various parts in the previous series from his lead role in the U.S. medical series “House”. Hugh Laurie being his name.
The actress who played the Queen (Miranda Richardson) appears as a character in one episode as does Stephen Fry and Tim Mcinnerny who played Lord Percy. Tim returns in a full role in the 4th series as does Stephen.
14:40 - The prince is Hugh Laurie who did a lot of comedy turns with Stephen Fry in this era (check out A bit of Laurie and Fry) - later he became more famous in the US as Dr. House.
Love this episode.
Miranda Richardson (Queenie) and Stephen Fry do appear later, in single episodes. Richardson does the same in the next series, while Fry has a regular role.
Most english people dont get the many different types of uk humour youve watched over the last few years you do so well to get so much
Loving your classic British sitcom reactions - Alan partridge, Blackadder, One Foot in the Grave, Red Dwarf. Please check out Absolutely Fabulous - I think you’ll like…. It’s up there with the already mentioned
it may be a comedy, but the depiction of the Royal Family is astonishingly accurate.
Pack of black socks! The ideal gift for men, if only people knew this! Just give me a pack of black socks and I'm happy!
They are all in this season as different characters.
Shame you didn't watch the first season....It's my favorite
Nooo poor writing blackadder was nearly cancelled until Ben Elton was brought on to the writing team for s2.
S1 phoned in jokes you could spot the punchlines a mile off.
I actually didn't believe people like you exist 😅
Welcome to a fan club of One 😁
Blessed is superb in it
Me too . I love the first one .
The rumour that season one is rubbish has been going around for decades .
It's completely unjustified. Even if you prefer the other seasons , there's no justification in writing off number one .
I think people are just put off that Rowan's character is so different in it ; he's more like an evil Mr Bean .
It's more a case of the blackadder family tree throughout history
The best of the three seasons, hands down.
Right, who's the bellend that downvoted? Seriously?
don’t worry, funny thing is yt considers likes and dislikes equally as viewer engagement…
It was Baldrick. He voted the wrong way
@@chrislyne377 😂
This might be my fave season of Blackadder. #Aardvark
“Blackadder Goes Fourth” is also brilliant.
I love the episode with Stephen Fry and what they do to poor Prince George. I love all of this season...it's my favourite followed by season 2 and season 4. Season 1 was OK, but Blackadder is the stupid one and Baldrick is cleverer than him. I think the sarcastic Blackadder suits the character better.
Did you recognise House (Hugh Laurie) as the Prince Regent?
Did you know Hugh Laurie from House before this, or from A Bit Of Fry & Laurie ?
For me this is the season Blackadder really hit it's stride. Don't get me wrong. I love Queenie but Hugh Laurie deserved his chance at a bigger role as he's so bloody talented
I have accidentally, brutally, cut my own head off, while combing my hair! 😀
Black Adder - Absolute class.... Hugh laurie as the Prince. It's hard to see him playing House and see him in a seriousish role
Blackadder (to Baldrick): Any history of insanity in the family?… Must make an adjustment… Any history of SANITY in family? None whatsoever.
🤣
--------
Blackadder: Have you committed any felonies?
Baldrick: No.
Blackadder: Oh, come on, Baldrick! You going to be an MP, for Pete’s sakes…. I’ll just put down fraud and sexual deviancy.
🤣
Realised you were probably on "Goes Forth" by now. It was enough to send me to Patreon.
The thing with British comedy (unlike American comedy) is the protagonist (Blackadder) never wins. And yes, The Prince Regent (future King George IV) was bad with money.
That's not entirely true, this series, now, is it?
@@AndrewHalliwell remind me
@@matthewjamison and post spoilers? Last episode, duke of Wellington?
@@AndrewHalliwell 😂. Forgot about that. But you get my gist in general about British comedy. Like, even when Del Boy finally becomes a millionaire, you know that 💩 isn't gonna work out 😂. In American comedy it would have.
Hey the dude spent thousands on carpets for elephant stabel
References to the Monster Raving Looney Party.
A real political party in the UK
Prince Regent who later became George IV amounted debts equivalent to GBP 66m in 2021 despite an income of GBP14m
man, it's a shame you missed the 1st series. It might be a bit different, but it's amazing!
The first season is rubbish, don't bother.
Dunny, is Australian/New Zealand slang for a toilet or outhouse.
I love this episode. But I really do like season 1 and think you should watch it, even though it's different from the three others.
I think that as series 1 is often considered to be the least accomplished and has flaws people assume that it's bad. But it's only because it's being judged relative to the other series of Blackadder. Compared to most other comedy series that aren't Blackadder it's better than most of them.
I really enjoyed the 1st series and will happily watch it if I feel like binge watching through all the series again. Brian Blessed is fantastic as the king.
Yeah prince george was known for wasteful spending but also war with france at the time and higher taxes made him pretty unpopular
Although this is a comedy the history is totally accurate.
Say's it's not a time travel show.... (starts laughing)......
I wasn't going to comment on Baldrick's first name in case somebody gave it away...
Brilliant....
Prince George, later George IV was one of the worst monarchs in British history. He was always in debt and betrayed and backstabbed absolutely everyone he ever dealt with
"Priceless turnip."
Prince George lost all his socks because Blackadder was selling them off.
I think you would really enjoy the TV show Plebs. It's rather similar to Blackadder.
after season 3 is 4 and then i hope u watch season 1 which is just as good imo
Season 4 is the best, but season 3 is pretty good.
The Blackadder family are downwardly mobile. Each generation his fall further down the social ladder...
Ahh, .com on, now... He does become galactic emperor. Ok, it takes a few hundred generations, but he makes it in the end.
@@AndrewHalliwell or he ends up wearing Baldrick's posing pouch.....
Season 1 is good
😂😂❤
I was never a big fan of Blackadder III. I didn’t think it was as funny as Blackadder II
The Blackadder goes forth was at least as funny as Blackadder II though.
I would have, for example, suggested to skip season 3 and watch season 1... But that's just me
Reminds you of how Brandon got elected.
Just like the US 2020 election ...lol
Who was the Baldrick that gave a down vote 🗳 🤔?
