210 YARDS BALLISTICS GEL TEST: .223 Hornady Superformance Varmint V-MAX

  • Ballistics gel test at a laser-measured 210 yards with the .223 Remington Hornady Superformance Varmint V-MAX, 53 grain. What better method for evaluating the performance of varmint ammo than at typical varmint hunting distances? Test rifle is the Bushmaster Varminter, 24" barrel. Brief pre-shot review, followed by full review of the bullet track, etc. from the 210 yard shot. I am using SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media, calibrated to the same specs as ordinance gelatin.
    Filmed on remote private property with an ample backstop. I was the only person in the vicinity during this session.

    This was a test with a TONE of information! Most ballistic testers will shoot their rifles at an unrealistic distance and that proves nothing! You are the only person who brings practical application into a testing medium to demonstrate real world effects. The .223 is an effective round at distance!

    That is one wicked round!! I tend to think that that might just kill a person. As others have said this would make a nice home defense round with very limited potential for over penetration. It seems the biggest worry here would be not enough penetration. But with 29 rounds in the magazine, a guy could sure make a mess out of some bad guy.

    I haven't tried the load you're testing, but I do use the Hornady 55gr. V-MAX on coyotes here. Most of my shots are in wooded cover at around 100 yds. I shoot a 16" barrel AR, and haven't had a coyote run away yet after being hit with one! The 53gr you tested looks like it would be even better. Great job on the video. Thanks.

    The reason this ammo is so effective is because it can still fragment while traveling at slower velocities. All of the standard FMJ ball ammo significantly loses the ability to tumble and fragment out past even 100 yards or so. Obviously this isn't going to be a long range hard barrier penetrator (or even short range) but when the Vmax does make that connection to tissue, it's very devastating. Humpty Dumpty just doesn't get put back together after that. Most of your viscera (organs) are definitely going to get the ugly side of that five inches of penetration. In my opinion; coyotes, zombies, ordinary bad guys, and yes even in rare cases women just wouldn't fare to well with a 4"x 5" crater to the axial portion. Anything with body armor or sitting behind a small tree/barrier would probably need the standard FMJ ball ammo or better. The only reason the military isn't using it (other than lack of penetration) is because they are prevented from using such ammo by The Hague Convention. So yes, Excellent round. Stock up! ;)

      Chad , this test is perform on long range, less velocity upon impact that make a over penetration issues not high velocity...223 drop the velocity fast due to low weight, at this distances it usually have come down to 2700fps when impacting that gels.. high velocity upon impact during homedefense at shorter distances equal to less penetration but more fragment upon impact a soft tissues and exploding wound channel.. thats what i want my bullets to be once its hitting chest of someone breaking into my home.. i test it on below 30yards at small coyotes shot, that things just explode a bit chunk of meats.. its exit the coyotes with a several pieces parts of jacket and leads, so definetely not lethal if something is behind that.

    Guys waffling about deer and this having low penetration - it's labelled VARMINT and it's .223. Clearly for, ummmm, VARMINTS. It's performed exactly as designed and intended.

    • @RobertMorgan
      @RobertMorgan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      exactly, varmints...such as DEER. We're not talking moose or elk here, they're giant thin-skinned rabbits, I've seen people cleanly kill them in 'alternative methods' season with both 9mm and .45acp defensive automatic handguns.
      I used to know a guy in St Louis that albeit illegally but that's his dumbass business, would drop deer eating his garden vegetables from his kitchen table out the window with a .22short.
      Shot placement is king, and that goes for deer, rabbits, elephants, and people.

    • @pichum4st3r
      @pichum4st3r 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** No doubt. The typical term for varmint are littler critters from coyote size and down. Varmint bullets are typically lower grain with a higher velocity. Varmint hunters want maximum energy dispersion when the bullet enters the target. Varmint hunters do not want the bullet to penetrate the other side of the animal. The pelt would be pretty much worthless. Larger animals are a different case. Penetration is more desired.

    That is a great test. It is so awesome to see your other video shooting the XM193 where it penetrated 1/4" of mild steel and completely passed through the ballistic gel, and then watching this .223 varmint round not even penetrate further than 5". What a violent impact and explosion from that varmint round. The AR platform is so adaptable. From 5.56 FMJ's and OTM's to .223 V-Max rounds, there's few animals the AR can't help you hunt/take out.

    • @TexanUSMC8089
      @TexanUSMC8089 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with that 100%. The reason the military isn't allowed to use anything but FMJ is fragmentation. This 53 grain vmax would be devastating on human targets. Not humane, but very destructive. No person hit with this 53 vmax would stay in the game. To much tissue damage. It doesn't have to have deep penetration to kill. It's like a hand grenade sending out razor blade shrapnel.

    • @TexanUSMC8089
      @TexanUSMC8089 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No law enforcement agency would use it because of legal problems. a 53 gr varmint round would cause to much tissue damage. The court room wants a humane kill not an ugly wound. No person would survive a shot in the belly or chest. They would probably lose an arm or leg if shot there. The Dr's would never be able to get out all of the shrapnel.

    • @TexanUSMC8089
      @TexanUSMC8089 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      with all of this arguing going on, how many of you have seen what shrapnel does to a human. Not read about it, or saw a video of an FBI report on ballistic gel, but shot a person, or seen a person shot? A shallow wound of 4 inches with fragments everywhere is more deadly. It might not happen as fast, but there's less a dr can do to save a person. They'll bleed to death a very horrible and painful death. In combat, I like that. Let them scream and bleed. Hollow points are not allowed by the military because they're not considered humane.

    • @brushwolf
      @brushwolf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, there is nothing that binds LEO's to strictly use FMJs. Quite the opposite, I've worked for two departments and both used soft points in our rifles. Right now there is Hornady SP's in the mags of my AR sitting locked in my unit.

    Hydrostatic shock is a good thing. Working LE, i got to the point where i preferred to use my rifle to dispatch injured deer (usually a rear head shot) whenever possible. The hydrostatic shock seemed to finish them almost instantly, and faster than my 40 (180 Gold Dot and later Ranger). Always kept muffs in my gear bag of course. Not terribly scientific, but it seemed true.

    • @hardcorealpha7924
      @hardcorealpha7924 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's what stops people and animals is the temporary cavity. People are tough and can take a big wound but the temporary stretch can shut down near by organs and spike blood pressure putting someone in shock.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, when I was a kid we shot lots of hogs on my uncle's ranch. Again, not real scientific but high velocity rounds seemed to stop them faster than larger, slower rounds, even when the larger bullets have more overall energy. He had a modern black powder rifle & it certainly worked but not as well as I would have expected. That's somewhat counter intuitive.

      +ZFlyingVLover It's the Hague Convention that forbids the use of expanding bullets, which we never signed. US SOF carry better rounds than this as standard issue. Only our line troops get stuck with FMJ and that's really only because it's cheap and we occasionally are forced to share with our allies that did sign the Hague.

    Hey TN, great video here! What are your thoughts on using this for home defense out of a 16" AR15? I've seen in your other videos how you love the Federal M193 stuff, and I use that in my AR when I'm closing up the gun shop, but at home, would this be better or what do you think? I know there's a lot that goes into that question but I'm concerned about over-penetration through walls and I certainly don't want to over-penetrate through the intended target. Thanks!

    Varmint bullets just open up and dump the lead forward causing massive internal damage. Yes they make for one hell of a man stopper also. I have shot groundhogs with this round and it looks like half the animal was turned inside out. I have yet to shoot a groundhog with my AR 10 style rifle in .308 using the Hornady 110gr v max , the load is out the barrel at 3250 but I am sure they will multiply this performance x2 . I JUST bought a Remington 700 VLS in .223 and was deciding on ammo for varmint. You have settled me on the vmax round though I think I will go with 55 grain. Excellent test, thank you for bearing the cost...lol

    Looks like VMAX is a great self defense round! Quick energy dump with a sufficient amount of penetration without much concern of over-penetration, and excellent fragmentation for shearing internal injury. Of course, .223 isn't the best caliber for the job, but if it's what you got, this round should be more than sufficient!

    Cool... Nice shot. Keep the ammo tests coming. Your tests are providing us with very good ideas on ammo performance. Yours are the best and most informative I have seen on youtube. Thanks for all the hard work making your videos. Please do some 5.56 green tip and some defensive rounds with and without denim penatration. Thanks

    love all ur videos great job do u think this would be a good defense load for my redjacketfirearms AR-15 16.5 barrel i like 5.56 but cant find any self defense loads that would over penetrate

    That was awesome, yes please more of that (rifles). I usually use Hornady Varmint Express 55gr ballistic-tips for yotes, but I definitely want to try some of these now. Nasty cavity.
