A brief history of the little car that could (The Eland series of Armoured Cars)

  • The Eland series of vehicles is an odd case. A small, thinly armoured car with a nose like Pinocchio that dared to face off against Soviet tanks. It was bouncy, cramped and prone to breaking down, but it served as the catalyst for the SADF's venture into more experimental systems like the Ratel IFV series. It's success in the Angolan bush saw the adoption into several other militaries, who still service the vehicle today.

    The Noddy car punched abive it's weight, but it was not intended to take on tanks, that was sheer necessity.
    I worked on the Eland replacement, the Rooikat, at School of Armour.
    I loved sneaking in to the restricted section holding captured enemy vehicles, looking at the damage caused by the Eland and Olifants.
    Elke Bokkop is ń fokkop!
    The steering wheel was held on by a single bolt which could work loose over time on rough terrain, leaving you scrambling for the bolt in the cramped cab while moving, unable to steer the damned thing...great fun was had by all!
    A mate had this happen to him, with the crew commander (span bev) yelling at him to turn left... so Grant stuck the steering wheel through the front drivers hatch and wiggled it to indicate the nature of the problem.
    Luckily there was a warehouse to stop the Noddy car...

      @@Hobambles I was the Standemag Opleiding's clerk, which ran the training course on that magnificent beast, but I didn't get to operate the Rooikat, but sure cleaned it a shitload of times... there was a 76mm brass shell that I had to polish as well, claiming to be the doppie of the first shot in anger from the 76mm naval gun the Rooikat carried. Yet the Rooikat supposedly never saw active Border service... there were two other prototype pre-Rooikat development vehicles there, so I suppose one of them might have found itself up in South West Africa, disguised as a pregnant Ovambo woman...
      Other than that, it was just plain paperwork for me, so I don't think I'll be your best bet on the intricacies of the Rooikat.
      The section was headed by Commandant Smith, Captain Le Roux, Lieutenant Crafford. And WOII van Jaarsveldt. (All Afrikaaners despite the two English names!)
      Standenag Opleiding stood for Standing Force Training.
      They were the guinea pigs testing the concept that became the Rooikat, and put together the training manual from scratch and then taught the first Rooikat courses.
      One of the first training courses was the Pretoria Highlanders, an armoured car regiment.
      I hope that info will help you find someone who knows the inside story of Rooikat operations.
      Ps: I worked so damned hard for them, that I missed the fall of the Berlin Wall, and only found out about that minor event in world history 5 or 6 months later while on leave!
      I even got a commendation for that.
      (For the hard work, not for missing the biggest event in Europe since 1945.)

    I was in School of Armour in 1990 (after the bush war), I was D squadron (tanks), Charlie was the Eland training group. First trip to De Brug at the start of B&O (Bestuur & Onderhoud) 9 of 10 of 12 vehicles broke down in the 40km distance, clutch etc.
    At the end of the B&O phase there was a army coup in Lesotho, a number of the Charlie guys (probably 12 or so of the 60) were pulled in as drivers for the Citizen Force units Deploying, they travelled from Bloem to Ladysmith and back with only 1 breakdown shortly before Bloem on the way back. The reliability was very much a function of the crew competency in managing 6 tons of weight on a 2.5 litre engine.

    @iSquaredEnigma หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Thanks for your mostly correct history on the noddy car. The operational facts are far from correct though noddy cars operated in troops of four cars, which is one troop, more often than not with the commander in the lead and the troop sergeant in the rear car. In coin Ops they almost never operated with infantry and were almost always just one troop of four cars. Four troops consisted of a squadron and armour always operated in a minimum force of one squadron although troops would operate individually. The heat round could easily penetrate all of the armour we faced. We did not like to operate in the Ratel as it was a massive target and very easy to hit. They also could get impossibly stuck and impossible to retrieve in the mud of the salt pans. The 90 mm was pretty useless in coin opps and a round similar to a huge shotgun shelll was developed called the Skroot round which was pretty effective in short range and ambushes which became a very big threat in the 1980s. Cars would operate with 1 90 and 1 60 facing left and the other two facing right to fire against ambushes.

    • @Hobambles
      @Hobambles  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for this! I'll admit, first looking into these vehicles, I was working with minimal sources and only a few people to talk to. But I'm getting better and would like to revisit this vehicle in the future and do a much more detailed video on it.
      I do have a question though, what was your opinion on the 90mm HEAT? I keep hearing it could penetrative Armour easily, but that the round sucked against heavier MBT's. If know of a book on the Ratel/Eland that explains this, I'd be more than interested in getting it.
      Thanks for checking me out!

    • @iSquaredEnigma
      @iSquaredEnigma หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Hobambles the 90 was an unstabilised analog sighted gun. Not very accurate compared to what we have today to say the least. I never used a HEAT in anger but it was well known to take out the T34/54/55 easily but they had crap armour compared to the equivalent western tanks. The Noddy 90 recoil was absolutely horrendous and if the commander had his head out the hatch (which was always) it was like taking a punch from a heavy weight. The Eland’s best roll was in COIN opps which is where I was involved. Perfect tool. In more conventional opps it was limited and not really fit for purpose against heavy armour. That said it accounted for itself admirably in the few one one fights against the Russian tanks. They were very reliable once the teething problems were ironed out on the new vehicles. Operational vehicles were always the tried and tested and not the new from factory cars.

    Wasnt the 90mm HEAT round still very much capable of frontally penetrating T-55/T-62? The hull armour wasn't all too impressive at around 200mm's line of sight thickness which a 90mm HEAT at around 320mm penetration shouldnt struggle with in theory

    • @Hobambles
      @Hobambles  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not too sure actually, I know that the 90mm could pierce the armour on a regular basis, but as far as I know, Eland and Ratel crews had to put in several shots either because of the mis-shot thanks to the non-stabalized gun or the taller Ratel's rounds' bouncing off the flatter T-54/55's hull armour. I'm supposed to be interviewing a Eland gunner soon, so i'll be able to confirm then.

    • @Hobambles
      @Hobambles  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ok, I confirmed with a primary source, a soldier who acted as a QRF, that the 90mm didn't often penetrate the hulls. The T-54/55's were apparently rutheless and fearsome in the thicket. And the 90mm difficult firing controls led to several Ratel-90's being destroyed. I'll confirm this with a few other sources I'm getting in touch with though.

    I know I will get looks and comments but somebody needs to say what we are all secretly wishing to be the case.
    If this would be brought into service into a another military some day I must list the following changes needed.
    1) If this things honks it must be the NOOT NOOT sound from that fucking penguin thing. (Fuck you people it needed to be said and must be done! I just have the balls the say it openly.)
    2) Amor upgrade but only towards lighter anti-armor weapons but maybe internal armor changes to the vic itself.
    3) Put anything that will improve the vic means to fire when firing the main weapon and on the move as well.
    4) It wouldn't hurt to add a anti-armor ATGM or something to the turret as a oh fuck me back up if it found itself against a more dangerous thing.
    5) No doubt about it or argument for all vics now EWS/jammers mounted to it to protected from drones to increase the odds of it coming back home.

    • @Hobambles
      @Hobambles  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      1) I fully agree, but they need to be train horns for optimal Noot-ness.
      2) I'm sure with modern composite Armour, it'd be quite a bit lighter.
      3) Actually, there were experimental Elands with something called the French ENTAC long-range, Wire guided anti-armour missile system mounted on either side of both the Ferret and Eland armoured car. From what I understand, the ENTAC missiles had a nasty habit of exploding if it got too hot, or misfired if it was too bouncy.

      Aw that sucks maybe it was just them and hopefully if this does make a comeback someone else will make that idea work better.
