What do you recommend for sealing the burner ports after a firing? I use broken kiln shelf as of now but sometimes they break. Maybe due to heating up too quickly? Great video! I'm learning a lot!
We use a metal plate on the soda kiln. We've also used a kiln shelf and we have used insulating bricks and we have used fiber board. Anything will do. Thanks for the encouragement!
What if you have a long channel of ribbon burners of each side walls? High temperature Ribbon burners are made from refractory mortar. Blacks smiths use ribbon burners to forge their steel. It provides high temperature, can withstand high temperature and is extremely efficient for both propane and natural gas. Electric blowers are needed, everyone uses forced air electric blowers for their foundries. Ribbon burners are also somewhat easy to make. Ribbon burners will provide a much faster heating time and I think it will also provide a much better even heat distribution in the Kiln. Good question. We don't believe high temperature ribbon burners would withstand the caustic atmospheres present in a soda firing. And we prefer the directional and reduction characteristics of the venturi style burners to help volatize the soda and spread it through the kiln.
