We still hear this today. Mariah Carey used it in her song “Fantasy” that topped the billboard hot 100 for 8 weeks and just last year Latto sampled it in her song “Big Energy”. The funny thing is, when they talk about the song “big energy”, they say Lotto sampled it from Mariah Carey without even realizing where it actually came from and how old it really is. And in another 30-40 years when everyone forgets it again, someone else will sample it to make it a hit again.
I remember tripping out, when I heard that Dreamlover sampled a hip hop song! I was alive for it’s original release. It was years before I knew about it! 😂
In Latto's case, I think she really did sample it because of Mariah. Her song "Big Energy" has the line "I can be your fantasy" in it and she also said she idolized Mariah growing up. Strangely enough, she initially denied the Mariah reference at first saying that she had never heard of "Fantasy" before, but now Mariah is on the remix edition so Idk what was going on there.

The sad part is that David Byrne wasn't happy for Chris and Tina when it was announced that the record went gold.

Still as fabulous as ever! Was watching the Suzie Q doc and Tina Weymouth popped up and I suddenly remembered the TT Club and wanted to hear this again. I’m suddenly transported back in my childhood bedroom aged 14! x
I always love and am always thrilled by the Tom Tom Club's formula of disco/new wave/funk, and of course with their own touch on top of it all! It's not a formula or concept that could be pulled off by just anyone, but they were the ones meant to create it and successfully make it work.
I initially heard this song during my dance evenings at the famous “First Avenue” in Minneapolis during their famous Tuesday night dance nights. This tune immediately made us get up and dance, despite the fact we had just danced two hours straight and were taking a break. The song just compelled you to move and was unique. They're totally different styles, but for some reason this video always reminded me of the Schoolhouse Rock videos I watched as a kid. Super cool song, and the 80s were amazing for music.

I agree. My uncle used to download older songs for me back when I was 17 and I loved playing them over and over, listened to this constantly in 2003 and it took me back. Don't know exactly what it is, but the song has that affect.
And it’s the original uncut version
Twin peaks 3 quotes? Hello old friend im very happy to see you again
Heaven on Earth. We are all richer hearing this fabulous song. The video is adorable. Long live Tina!!!
As a kid this was one of my mom's go-to albums to put on when she wanted to clean house to prepare for guests. I remember staring at this album art for hours. It was also how I learned about the existence of drugs and what coke was, lol whoops. Love you mama~
I was brought here by the memories of a childhood that was loaded with fun times; a lot of them due to music like this.
This song is the result of so many r & b hits.
2:39 stereo echo effects - very cool on headphones.
🎉
Bring us home home Charlie Kelly ...

Came for this. Also, its 2020 and if you're reading thIs from the past, RUUUUUNNNNNN!!!!
Time to squash some beefs!
@@txoutlawent.6515 May I offer you an egg in this time of trouble?
I was trying to remember the name of this song for the last 30 years. I'm 40. I always recognize that one lyric, rhythm and video. Thank goodness for the Shazam app.
A moment of silence to the people who cant find this song
lost ages searching for it
That’s hilarious haha. I just barely made it lol
I would never have found it if it wasn't in Always Sunny. This song had vibes even before it became a meme word
damn right lol
.. Due to its catchy nature yet seemingly unrelated and obtuse song title
Dude, I don't know how or why, but this song feels so underrated yet so popular at the same time. It feels like I just discovered some extremely obscure song, but it's literally the exact opposite of obscure.
I loved the performance of this song in Stop Making Sense (one of my favorite films). I didn't realize the "James Brown" bit was actually part of the original recording. :-)
He still is the godfather of soul y'all!
Pax Gethen they changed up the lyrics a bit for that performance
Fun fact: at the time, this record went gold before the Talking Heads had a gold record. Chris Frantz said he remembered walking down Houston Street in NYC near the basketball courts and people blasting "Genius of Love" on their boom boxes via WBLS. He said it brought tears to his eyes. The sad part is that David Byrne wasn't happy for Chris and Tina when it was announced that the record went gold.
David got burned....with envy.
Holy Hyeesh! ...To have the memory of this song playing on the the ol skool bball courts of Houston would be one of the greatest gifts of my life.
And I must be the only that didn't know, until just now, that Tina and Chris were married.
@@kirbzmom Yup. One of the pivotal dynamics of the band. You can get a glimpse of how crucial TTC is to the Talking Heads by watching Byrne & Molly Cyrus sing Bowie's Let's Dance NYE. It's embarrassing for Byrne... He can't dance! He's stuck with MC, playing a network variety gig.
He may be an artist...but w/o the Tom Tom Club he's not much of a musician.
How far they have fallen.
Dave is a brilliant musician but he has an ego as big as all outdoors!!!
I love the vibe this artstyle gives off
I almost get like Rugrats vibes or something, lol
Fun Fact: The makers of this video also directed the Super Mario Bros movie
Every year I want to re-watch that that movie IGN 10/10
WHAT?????
@@332spicelord Yep, look it up. They also created Max Headroom too.
Wait really?!
Woah! that's good to know
Very ahead of it's time. That little synthesizer hook ties it back into the 80's, marvelously.
There is nothing like the original. I remember when this came out it was as different as it gets and it still is. Have to love it.

The cute dog is the most memorable part of the video for me.
I've been robbed of knowing this song for my 23 years on this earth... it's about time
Twenty years, almost twenty one and *hard* same.
I’ve been a fan of Talking Heads for years, too!
When great music actually brought people together...
Great memories! 🎶
This song is a prime example how two of the most underrated parts of a band can be the reason for a hit
Drum
and
Bass
Don’t 4 get da electric synthesizer with the bass keys and guitars… like the Hawaiian guitar for one
Wow... It's literally been decades since I last saw this. In fact, it was when MTV actually showed music videos. Shame Rhino could not afford to upscale it to HD.
@dandanthetaximan Full screening it does not make it HD. Learn to HD my friend.
its better low-fi dawg
It's a shame people can't enjoy videos if they are not in hd.
It would be great to see the animation remastered in HD
@Jimmy Jazz it is awesome. Still wish it was in HD.
Saudades desse tempo que eu era criança
This is one of most unique and genius hits of all time. Everything about it is amazing! Sing song will be just as good in another 100 years.
This music video is like a dream to me .

Here is a great proof that the 80s music will continue to be music for all times. Not only a great band for making different music, but have created a living vibe till our days.
Back home the radio didn't give this much airplay ( it only reached #31 in April, 1982) but after hearing it on Casey Kasem's countdown I had to have it so I got a 45 from Tower Records and still have it now. It's one of those tunes that never leaves my mind.
Where did you live and what station did you listen to? Because we heard it in1981 and it peaked at Billboard 1 US Hot Dance Club Songs and 2 at US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
@@passion4posh Phoenix, AZ back then. The main top 40 station was KZZP back then. In the previous few years several old stations either went defunct or changed their formats and call letters.
Frank Reynolds jiggling, holding a beer and looking angrily at his landlord.
This songs takes me way way back to NYC in ‘82 , Fun House, Gotham West and Broadway 96
Tina Weymouth, 29th on the greatest bass players of all time “Rolling Stone” and this bass line is one of the reasons why. She was the “Genius of Love”
Sweetest song ever. So full of love. Found it a week ago and cant get over it
Welcome to the club.
Welcome to the club.
It was in 1981, I was 17 and madly in love with Mario. Took the train all the way to Calabria and we listened to Tom Tom Club with his friends. Nice memories.
40 yrs in the blink of an eye. It goes so damn fast.
Mariah Carey’s use of this song for her hit “Fantasy” is sooo good
She's was a child of the 80s.
this song lives in my head rent free. every week i listen to it like 10x
I initially heard this song during my dance evenings at the famous “First Avenue” in Minneapolis during their famous Tuesday night dance nights. This tune immediately made us get up and dance, despite the fact we had just danced two hours straight and were taking a break. The song just compelled you to move and was unique. The DJ was great and always played the newest music from everywhere and anywhere. It was our Midwest Studio 54. Great times.🎶❤️🎶
This track was released a few months after I was born... It has always been a high contender for my most favourite song ever!
The band it self is was just incredible! And with Talking Heads! BRO! One of my most fav bands ever! Its just one of the most glorious things to happen in music to me!
WOW FOREVER!
We used to dance to this song in the clubs in the early 1980’s. It never ages!
i always love when i hear this riff pop up sampled in other songs! it just makes me go back and listen to this more and that's always a good choice
i'm also utterly in love with the animation and style of the video! knowing it's all hand-drawn makes it even more impressive, it's just so fun to watch
They're totally different styles, but for some reason this video always reminded me of the Schoolhouse Rock videos I watched as a kid. Super cool song, and the 80s were amazing for music.
As a kid growing up, sharing a car with a family of five. We always fought about the radio. Parents liked Hispanic music, my siblings liked pop, I liked rock. My dad also really liked Funk. This is the only song that we all enjoyed. I grew up with the long version tho lol. Now we associate this song with long car drives.
No one is talking about this incredible feat of handmade animation. Superb on every level.
half of the comments are talking about it

Oh wow RHINO thank you so much for sharing this video. This is a old school jam still sounds fantastic!
Music has changed so much but growing up in the 70's with such great music is memorable 👍
I remember watching this on MTV!!! Love this song!!!
I so wish we still had new music like this. I was born in 1973 and the 80s were the best
Being a 90s kid, I feel like this was supposed to end with a Nickelodeon logo
Or may be Adult Swim

You would lol
@RipMudafuka69 MLG that's what he's saying
Yeah this looks very late 80s-early 90s
I'm almost 41 and wow I just found out that what I heard in hip hop was originally from her. And this song is pure fucking magic.
WHOAH I HAD NO IDEA!!! I LOVE HOW INDIE THE ORIGINAL SONG SOUNDS. IM SO EMOTIONAL
I had this 45 back in the day. It has a timeless sound.
If you're not tapping your feet to this you ain't got no feet.
My mom and Dad had listened to this song, this is a wonderful masterpiece, a “Big Energy”.
