    Robbie Robertson was an Indigenous Canadian (Mohawk on his mother's side) who grew up on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve not far from Toronto. Three of the four other members of The Band came from very near there in Southern Ontario. They are very much a part of our cultural heritage. RIP to Robbie from someone who saw he and the Hawks play very often on the Yonge St Strip in Toronto. They were fabulous.

      I never knew that about RR or The Band members...
      I am amazed as to how small this world really is. Daniel Lanois' Grant Ave. Studio was less than a block away from my home in Hamilton Ont. and I never knew it even existed until I ran into The Edge, in a local coffee shop. Even Tom Wilson was from Hamilton, I think. The "Hip" was a fairly local band. Rush and Max Webster, from the Toronto area, and the Canadian list goes on.
      It makes me wonder if I should not have taken music more seriously, as a possible career choice, but I always thought R&R was mostly, an American thing, and I never wanted to leave home.

Nothing compares to her song "Mandinka". Give it a listen, it's exhilarating. Keep in mind, her otherworldly vocals are all hers, no auto-tune, no pitch adjusting. Pure talent. I wasn't raised on auto-tune and I can't appreciate it. It doesn't appeal to me at all. Never has. And add to it all that stuff about these types of guys being in with the mafia is the cherry on top. When you look into Sinatra and all the stuff he did, I'll never listen to his music. That guy was a psycho. If it we're for the mafia he would have been in prison. I wonder if 60 years from now people who are well read will look back on today and marvel at the scale of criminality and corruption that is the current world? I suspect they will but who knows.

    • @ZigbertD

      @@bunsw2070 "These types of guys" being in with the mafia? Do you know how stupid that sounds?

    • @bunsw2070
      @bunsw2070 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZigbertD They were all linked to the mob back then. Entertainers, politicians and businessmen. Who built Vegas?
      I was searching for information recently about a Henry Crown who was CEO and major shareholder of General Dynamics (JFK was most likely murdered for giving military contracts to his mob buddies and the biggest of them all was the TFX contract to General Dynamics) in the early 1960s. I found a book title Dark Quadrant that had a chapter about Crown. Back then you couldn't build a hotel or anything significant in New York, Miami, Chicago, Vegas or Los Angeles without express mob approval and payments. Everybody knew everybody and you had to respect and pay off everyone, and I don't mean, just organized crime. It's a mistake to think of the mafia as a bunch of Italian criminals. It's way bigger than that. The US government is the biggest mafia of all.
      That book made my head spin with all the names and connections everywhere. No wonder the elites travel so much. Gotta maintain the relationships.
      Anyway, if you go and watch old movies or footage of the entertainers with what we know about what it was like back then you can tell they were hooked up. It's obvious in everything about them. Ever see North By Northwest? I don't mean the plot. I mean everything else. Cary Grant was 56 and Eva Marie Saint was 27. And she's got the hots for him? It's a mafia fantasy movie. And Grant never stops smoking or drinking whiskey.
      I'd bet my life that things are more corrupt today but now it's corporate. Who knows what will come out 60 years from now. When I hear that music I can't separate the artistry or performances from the totality of what these people were. I have an intense hatred and disgust for corrupt people that prey on the weak.

    Burt, Sinead, Tony, Davd, now Robbie. Aren't we so lucky to have been around to experience them? I saw Tony a few years ago, so awesome with Gaga. And way back in the 60's, I saw Robbie backing Dylan - what a great album Northern Lights Southern Cross years later. Burt and Hal gave us so much. And Jimmie Webb is so good - still producing! Thank you, Rick.

    I missed Bobby Caldwell a lot. He passed away in March. His voice was really something special. “What You Won’t Do For Love” is one of my favorite tunes of all time. So cool and laidback with the brass licks at the end that make it a complete classic… That high synth brass tone at the end had some kind of melancholy vibe over it that always creates goosebumps…

    Robbie Robertsons most profound work was with "The Band" who wore a Canadian band, with American drummer Levon Helm, who were American Ronnie Hawkins' backing band moving on to becoming Bob Dylan's band when he first went electric. The BAND turned the musical world on its ear with their American roots rock sound. Every rock great at the time from McCartney, to Lennon, to Clapton, and many more they were blown away by The Bands songwriting & musicianship. They were a huge influence on the music of their era.

    When I was in high school, in the mid 1970s, I had a music teacher who said his favorite composers were Bach, Brahms and Bacharach. That (other than AM radio) was my introduction to Burt. I agree with you, Tony and Burt's selections that you played were uplifting to me. They made me happy and my heart quickened, both with the caliber of the composition and performance, and with recollections of the time that they were popular. And Robbie and Sinead made me sad, but in slightly different ways. Although hard to articulate why. I was lucky enough to see Tony Bennet live twice. Both times in the 5,000 seat movie palace where I worked. He did this little bit both times where he pointed out that theaters such as that one were designed for live performances in the days before amplification, and to prove this he had them shut down his sound equipment. There were about 4,000 in attendance that first night, and when he shut down the sound I took advantage of the chance afforded and ran up into the top of the balcony, which, itself, held about 1,800 people. I wanted to see how the acoustics were with a lot of bodies and no amps. He stood and sang with only drums, piano and upright bass. He knew how to project and where to stand. He was old school. The result? I have never heard so many people be so quiet. There wasn't a cough. And this was obviously an older crowd. And he could be heard clear as a bell. It was amazing. And the acoustics allowed him to be heard everywhere I went while performing my impromptu test. These deaths always sadden me - especially the premature ones - but look at the gifts they gave us. It's true - we shall not see their like again.
