Overcoming Fear: Conquering Biscay on Our Atlantic Sailing Journey

  • The start of our Sailing Adventure to cross the Atlantic Ocean. This is the first stage crossing the feared Bay of biscay , through High winds and big seas. We explain how we handle reefing our Oyster 47 in heavy seas, and how we set our sails. We take on an extra crew to make the 24 hr watch system less stressful. Our weather reporting system gives out on us as we head into the forecast 30 knots of sea and 4 m (12ft) seas. The long hours of sailing are balanced with superb sunsets, moon rises and moon sets , oh and the stars in the clear air away from land light pollution were fantastic . This was our first taste of fully offshore sailing with ocean swells , flying fish and far far from land. We have loved sailing all around the shores of the UK , but this was always our dream , to sail into the sunset crossing oceans, and visiting warm sunny shores, only one way to do that , by taking the first step across the channel around the NE capes of France and out into the 15000 ft deep waters of the Bay of Biscay. Join us as we fulfil our dream . #sailing #arc #Bay of Biscay #Atlantic Crossing #yacht #sail into the sunset #ARC #ARC + #Crossing Biscay #sailing life #life afloat #Atlantic crossing

    Ok it's my turn for this challenge in the next month or two. Bricking it, but gotta be done! For the same reasons as you, I will be taking the same course.

      It started out really good with great winds then the sea got up on the beam and the wind also making it a bit like a washing machine

      Wishing you good luck and a favorable forecast. I think if you’ve got a sound boat and you’ve prepared it with good equipment, all u need is a good forecast and a plan B ,C,D and you’ll be good to go . As the previous owner said to us , you’ll get scared well before the boat reaches its limits , reef early and hard and you’ll be fine.

    I don't usually write on youtube but I really enjoy your vlog. Not the best filming and not the best sound but the most informative sailing guide, wheater planning and explaining. Good job and you have got a new premunant on the channel. I wish you good sailing weather and good following seas from Sweden.

      Many thanxs for comments , we’re only amateurs and producing blogs on a boat is not that easy, your comments most encouraging. As we gain more experience sailing , things we take for granted are things that are of interest to other sailors. Fraid my scratchy drawing are all we have available for graphics onboard. Hoping they manage to get the point over . Next Challenge is the Orca’s along the coast of Spain/Portugal.

    I did it twice. It is a gamble and needs carefull planning. The weatherwindow can turn from good to very bad. Make a wide berth around Ouessant, wind is frequently west to southwest. Slalom very big waves; rogues are one in nine or so. Above the banks, cross waves might be expected.

      Totally agree , it is a bit of a gamble on weather. Most forecast seem to be ok for 2-3 days after that they get more flakey as u go further. The continental shelf also seems as u say to be an influence especially on sea state. All you can do is prepare your best .

    Many years ago when I knew no fear a friend and myself took my Contessa 26 across Biscay. This was before GPS, AIS and no radar. She had a Vire two stroke engine with and attitude problem and would stop for no apparent reason that I ever discovered. While good little sea boats for their size, the 26 is a very wet boat to sail. Yes, we made it with a bit of luck and a lot of fear. We were young and ill prepared for a voyage of this type. Would I do it again? Yes I would and have several times since but not on a Contessa 26 😀. My little boat made it all the way to Greece over the next two years in stages when time allowed. She never did the return trip and was sold to an English couple who lived on Spetses. Great video👍.

      Great boats Contessa 26 , fast boat to sail , I remember one coming to yacht club when then first appeared . GRP , that’ll never last , said all the wooden boat skippers . Then when it won its class in just about every race that year , they all thought differently . Biscay is not for the faint of heart , especially when it’s frisky .

    You are underway! So exciting -- QUESTION -- What did you do to mess up the Starlink connection? You mentioned that it was your fault. Kinda want to know what not to do..

    • @Aequitas-sailintothesunset
      @Aequitas-sailintothesunset  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Starlink had several types of service, the one u would fit to your home £85 / month, then there’s an RV service that allows u to move from place to place , but will not work if your driving above 10mph, (so that works for sailors ) but u do need to be within about 10 miles of the coast otherwise it cuts out, then there is global roaming £200 per month if your heading to another continent (that’s what we have) and if your going far offshore u also need to switch on priority data , that’s what I forgot to do so no way to get the signal back at that point (unless we turned round) so we just had to go on to A Coruna without it. Incidentally the priority data cost £2 per Gb so use sparingly . But it is great to use just a bit expensive but then we don’t have a phone line, land line or any of those costs and it does work everywhere .

      @@Aequitas-sailintothesunset ..huh..did not know that. Hopefully by the time I get sailing, Starlink is at a reasonable flat rate price - at least I hope so!

      Glad u enjoyed blog and picked up some tips , makes it worth the effort making the vids . It’s always tricky figuring out what might be interesting and what level to pitch it at. For example we anchor most days so it’s pretty mundane to us , but judging by those around us who struggle to get a good anchor set , might be worth doing a how we do it section as part of a longer vid .

    You are not movie producers. I can hardly hear your dialogue because of the STUPID ANNOYING MUSIC in the background. The sounds of the ocean and wind are all that makes sense.
