I browned my first barrel on my Shenandoah. I used a small propane torch and couldn't get even heat. So I did in segments. The cloth I used was not 100% cotton so it came apart. I kept trying to correct my mistakes by going over it 3 or four times using steel wool between coats. It turned out awesome after I used 100% cotton. I got that old dark look that your going for. Hats off to ya.
Years ago I built a CVA Mountain rifle. BTW..... I wish they still had that kit. Anyway, I used a torch to heat my Barrel and used the hot browning solution and if I remember right it only took two coatings. I used a very fine steel wool each time and it came out quite nice. Looking very much forward to the next update.
That look good, one way of getting a more reliable "rust" is to make a humidity chamber with 4 planks, put a light bulb in the bottom with a tray of water and stand it vertically, this will give you a nice even rust in just a few hours, even in the cold winter.
Dear Mike: That Homer Dangler Brown looks to work very well, I will probably need to build a sweat box of some kind as where I live is very dry, unless one is inside with the Swamp Cooler running during the Summer, it stays about 15% humidity. The nice thing about this brown, is that it seems to be quite forgiving and that spots blend in with successive treatments. It looks as if that the degreasing step is the most critical step, followed by the carding, I have a VERY fine stainless steel brush that I use for these tasks, this Brown is probably slower than either the Laurel Mountain Brown and the Mark Lee Express Brown, that is not a bad thing though, it looks to be more forgiving than either of those two other products. Thanks for the tip, and the information about the site, I've already ordered a supply of the Homer Dangler Brown and some other things as well. The project is progressing nicely. I have yet to find the kind of Breech that Green River used to use with the internal "chamber" I probably end up making my own. I have settled on a .62 barrel with a slow twist for my Lehman project. Your reports of the outside temperatures makes me glad that I'm living in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, even if they are in The Peoples Republic of California. Perhaps someday I'll pick up and move to the Mogollon Rim in Arizona, it is more welcoming to gun enthusiasts than my Native California, all the Easterners moved in and just ruined what was once the best place to live in the whole world, I wish they had walked West 'til their hats floated..
I got a .45cal Kentucky Pistol Kit for my 16th Birthday and wanted to brown it instead if blue. Browning was popular in the late 70's early 80's. Applied 1st coat let it set overnight like instructions said and next day I about died seeing my barrel coated in rust. Thought I had ruined the gun. Lol
I used a vaporizer and mounted a pvc pipe over it. end capped with the barrel hanging inside it when I rust browned one..Plugged the muzzle end with a rubber stopper to keep moisture out of the inside..Seemed to work rather well..
I can't find the segment #7 for the wood finish. That what I'm looking for the most. Can you please tell me where to find the wood section . The videos are supreme.
I'm working the same kit now. How did you card the tight areas such as the insides of the ramrod tubes and the tight areas in the trigger guard? I'm work on this kit now and it would be a great help to me. Thank you for this great video series! It's so nice to see someone with a decent camera, good narration, good lighting and above all else, good camera usage so we can see what you're doing!
I was a inch away from ordering one today? is that my best purchase for money. I want 50 cal, percussion, 1 in 60, I only want round ball long barrel, I got a super nice cva to poor and shoot round ball to see if I enjoyed it. now I'm ready to get a life time shooter. I have 45/70 for rest of hunting.
Nice ! I'm doing the same build and will be following each of your videos, Thanks in advance! Question why not use the same solution on the hardware and the barrel?
I'm about to use the same product on my Lyman rifle. Other then decreasing the barrel did you sand at all? After completion of your barrel would you have done it any different?
I realize cold brown...But I have used cold blue`s brownells, caseys and vans heated to 150-170ish not up to hot bluing temps heated the metals so the chems could bond better takes a better blue. Any thoughts??
I know this is an older video and you are most likely busy ... but i use vinegar for all sorts of things .removing rust Removing bluing Carbon Even powder residue from the nipples on my 51 navy ....even cleaned files with it ..... Ive seen vinegar cause rust as well usually a very fine red rust My question is. Can i brown or rust blue using vinegar as the rusting agent And boiling in water and baking soda to neutralize the acids....
Abradolf Lincler Probably. Anything that produces a fine, non-pitting rust will work, but, if you boil it, it will produce a rust blue, rather than a brown.
mr. duelist.. im sorry to bother you..but i just saw your video on the webley pistols... i have one that is hammerless... and chambered in .38 ...is it safe to fire modern .38 special out of it....

That really came out great.. Can't wait to see it mated to the stock.
That's nice nice job I need to do that to my 36 caliber little tradition for the kids
Your browned barrel is looking sweet. That Lyman is gonna look great!

Definitely a humid summer job.

Truly amazing. Kudos!
Great series.
Looks good.

Hot browning is faster, but heating up a whole barrel is difficult.
BET DIET SODA WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER THAN BAKING SODA .
GREAT VIDEO !
Nice!

I ordered the complete rifle an it rusted on its own
can you use an ammonia based glass cleaner to neutralize the acid
why do you have to brown the barrel? Could it not be blued? Or is brown what they did back in the old days?
Go to Walmart and buy a humidifier or vaporizer, should work great. 👍
I realize cold brown...But I have used cold blue`s brownells, caseys and vans heated to 150-170ish not up to hot bluing temps heated the metals so the chems could bond better takes a better blue. Any thoughts??
I have done a couple of rifles using Brownells Oxpho Blue, and carding it back to a French Gray finish.
Penzpil or Wuaker State oil.
Did the originals use chemicals to brown the barrels? Or did they just rust on their own?
iron nails dissolved in nitric acid
Did you need to do any sanding or polishing on the barrel?
Nope. I was a bit surprised
ABOUT 35 YRS AGO I DID A T.C. HAWKIN & SPENT 30 HRS ON JUST THE BARREL , BUT KITS WERE LESS THAN 1/2 THE COST OF FINISHED .
I know this is an older video and you are most likely busy

Removing bluing

duelist1954 i figured id get a blue finish
Not sure how to thoroughly neutralize it. And get a consistent browned finish.
Mike, that barrel looked like a total pain in the butt.
Stew Knoles Not really..pretty normal fit cold browning.
mr. duelist.. im sorry to bother you..but i just saw your video on the webley pistols... i have one that is hammerless... and chambered in .38 ...is it safe to fire modern .38 special out of it....
No. It is chambered for .38 S&W, which is a different cartridge. Just pick up a box of those.
duelist1954 thank you for the info...i wasnt aware that .38 s&w was still made....
did you brown the lock??? dont thank you sayed anything about it
Michael McGhee No. The lock comes color case hardened
Was that a cat ?
Are you sure you not related to bill Clinton.
