If you're curious, glitches you see in DX work on Both versions, but the footage of glitches in the original Link's Awakening only work in that version.

3:35 I know why that Dodongo glitch PROBABLY happens. Both of them were assigned the same ID by accident, there's a conditional operation upon entering the area to see if you had defeated any IDs (which all/nearly all enemies have) (e.g. if id="x" is "defeated" then "don't appear"). Because they were both accidentally assigned the same ID, they'll both not appear upon entering the room so long as you defeated 1 of them.

eh, pretty sure it's simpler than that. it's probably a simple flag that gets toggled when a boss is defeated, and both of them flip the flag to true.
I don't think the enemies in this game don't have unique id's either, could be wrong though.
I remember being a little kid and discovering the glitch world by accident (this was long before the internet), by falling into the skeleton pit while fighting the first boss and immediately jumping up. I spent many hours slowly exploring and mapping that place, getting a little farther every time. Good times.
You missed out on one of the biggest (and most useful) glitches in the game:
Start the game and play as normal, once you get the sword you need to kill enemies...over...and over..and over..*DO NOT* enter any buildings or caves. You *MUST* stay on the overworld. This will take some time, but if you keep doing it you can actually get various powerups. It has to do with the games memory, and when you enter a building or cave it wipes it, but if you stay out and continuously kill enemies you can overload it causing the glitch. By killing the Octorocs that are by the beach at the start of the game, I was able to get the Red Tunic after about 20-30min of killing them over and over. Items obtained vary based on enemies slain. This glitch *DOES* work on the 3DS Virtual Console version (I tested it, it works). You can also obtain the Blue Tunic using this glitch, as well as several other glitched-color tunics.
I remember I tried that and I got this weird dark-blue tunic that somehow made Link invincible.
Kyle Smith I'm about to drop a bombshell about this glitch. I hope you're still interested, because the ins and outs of this glitch are pretty deep and interesting - at least, I think so.
I believe it's due to the way the game determines Pieces of Power/Guardian Acorn drops from enemies as well as enemy respawns - the game tracks your kills and tracks which enemies are dead. Each enemy on each screen has an index number tracking it, and the index number of the 90th enemy you kill changes your tunic to that value. Changing maps resets the kill counter. Presumably, the bit that holds the data for the tunic your wearing is adjacent to this counter, and when it reaches 90 it spills over in some fashion, altering its contents, or something like that. I mostly just know how the glitch functions on a user level, but this is probably because the tunic feature was just added into Link's Awakening DX, and when they placed it in the game's memory, they weren't very mindful that the counter could mess with it.
The only way to find out the enemy index numbers on your own is by experimenting with this glitch. However, I'll tell you about all 6 tunics that are available. There could be a 7th, but I don't believe there is a screen that has 7 enemies at once. Still, it's a possibility.
-You can get the green tunic by killing enemy number 1 for whatever screen you're on as the 90th enemy.
-Red from enemy number 2
-Blue from enemy number 3.
-Several screens have 4 enemies, where you can get a tunic that uses the colors when link gets hurt - known as the damage sprite tunic, which deals double damage like the red tunic, but without the knockback.
-There is 1 screen that has 5 enemies (the Goponga Swamp flowers in front of the dungeon entrance - You'll need bow wow or the hookshot and kill the bottommost flower for the 90th enemy), for which you get a dark blue tunic, which turns green when you go to the same screen as the Eagle Tower. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything special, so it's really just a fancy looking green tunic. I think it's Link's drowning palette, but I could be wrong.
-Finally, there's 1 screen with 6 enemies near the Southern Face Shrine, it is one of the Armos Knights (The statue guys) in a group of four in the lower right of this one screen. Killing it for the 90th one gives you a tunic that changes colors based on the current screen, likely because it's using the palette of some of the tileset. This effectively gives you a rainbow tunic that changes every time you leave an area. I believe it also gives you double damage as well, though I've never used this one personally - I've simply seen a video on youtube about it.
It's a very fun glitch to play around with, and creating a restore point after killing the 89th enemy on the 3DS Virtual Console version makes it very easy to test it out and find which enemies have which index numbers to get the desired tunic. I remember doing a lot of research and messing around with this glitch several months ago. I hope you have fun playing around with it!

I did a stream of this, and did alot of these glitches a few months back on Twitch.
But man the worst one I found was I entered a room full of hung dead skeletons, all of them committed suicide and there were two walrus's.
I was like - Done!

I once glitched out my copy so bad, all three files were erased and replaced with corrupted files with corrupted names. I couldn't delete any of them.
All of them brought me to the Canalet Castle, with three hearts, and no weapons. I was able to move freely around the Castle yard, but for some reason, the Ghost that follows Link around was frozen on the Screen, not making any noises or movements.
I truly thought my game was beyond repair and (stupidly) threw the cartridge away. Sorry I did, because this would have been before the advent of TH-cam and I would love to back this story up.
You could've just disconnected then reconnected the battery that's inside the cartridge.
I remeber starting a game one time when I was younger but for some reason I had the first dungeon key and Tarin wouldn't give me my shield so I couldn't get my sword, so I had to steal stuff from the shop.

Such an incredible game with lots of fond childhood memories listening to that soundtrack! I'm long overdue for a replay of this and would love to try some of these out.
When i was really young i played this game for days straight, exploring and what not.
But since then i was unexpierenced in gaming whatsoever and found a glitch by accident you might find interesting, i didnt see it anywhere before.
to get to the last Dungeon for the last instrument i found myself lost, i actually had to go to the seventh dungeon but couldn't find it and was stuck. I found the way to dungeon eight instead with the fire blocking the way where i couldn't go through since i had not obtained the mirror shield yet so i used the chicken to fly over it wich hit me like 4-5 times and i got over it completly skipping the seventh dungeon by accident.
i had to redo it later tho, i relized years later that it was a glitch instead and i wasnt supposed to get over the fire that way.

After i beat the Sven dungeon i was like where my flying rooster and the owl i went in a building to act like i was going to asks the person if thy seen the flying roster i go in and say hey have you seen my..... HEY an i saw he stoled it from me and made me mad.
Huh. I did that too. I didn't realize it was a glitch until now. When I first played it, I didn't realize that I needed the Mirror Shield to get in, I did a combo of using pegasus boots+shovel to start a dash, then switched to roc's feather and power bracelet to grab the rooster and jump over the flames.
I think I may have gotten hurt once right at the base of the fire?

Screen warping can be used to get the Power Bracelet during your first trip to the Lost Woods, before getting the Tail Key. Go into the one cave that takes you to the mushroom, and go up one room (the one leading left with slimes coming out of the floor). Screen warp over the next screen to the left, and move left to find a chest with the Power Bracelet inside.
This video was published very long ago but I feel this is a good place to put this. So, I was messing around with the doghouse glitch, exploring garbage data worlds. I stumbled onto a glitched out fairy fountain and decided to see what would happen if I saved and quit while I was being healed by its great fairy. When I reloaded my save I was at the start of the glitched world I was in before with a few differences. First of all collision actually worked as intended in the non-corrupt versions of the rooms I explored, second thing is that a decent amount of the enemy sprites I saw functioned somewhat correctly. The map sprites and map in general were still broken, though. So I decided to reload the save yet again and was STILL in the glitched world. I think you're completely stuck at this point unless you have Manbo's Mambo or can find a staircase to take you back to an actual in-game location. Edit: It might just be sending me to the doghouse glitch world variation when you kill only one enemy, which has good collision and some functional enemy sprites but I'm not sure.
Just a moment ago on Virtual Console I was exploring the Dog House Glitch and it was on my main save, where I had gotten far. I killed some enemies on the way to try it, and when I got in none of the walls were solid. Then i entered a staircase and lo and behold, I was in Bottle Grotto! And I couldn't leave because of the Switch Tiles!

@@doomcat4465 I went to the bottle Grotto and went to the bottom room with four pots in it and I actually glitched down through that room and then I ended up getting into the dungeon to get the Pegasus boots early.

I'm sure that through the updating of the game there will be some differences, but most of them are the same as the original!

+MaximumFunGaming in terms of running the game, Screenwarping isn't helpful in any%, only any% no major skips.
There are still tons of glitches in the game, bow-wow breaks the game in a lot of different ways
frizzykid100 Well you'd save small bits of walking time by schreenwarping. You know, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty.
You can find the original online for less then 20 bucks. Yeah, the 3DS version is what made me discover this game, and what i missed growing up. I then discovered my step cousin had it after all that time and just left it to my cousins. I took it over only to have it stolen from me...
I never knew of other ways to enter the glitch world, but I discovered it myself many years ago. The entrance I found was in the original and you do it by using the feather to jump into the upper right corner of the Tail Dungeon boss room. Hold up/right and mash the jump button, and when you fall into the side scrolling dungeon room bellow you'll jump back out through the top screen and be in the glitch world.
What a classic, one of the best games I've ever played.

I've know about the warp glitch for years. I accidentally found it myself and used it to destroy my game.
I once used it to beat the entire game without my sword, got all the items and Instruments of Sirens and ALL the followers with me (BowWow, Flying Rooster and Marin)... Well, I actually didn't beat the ENTIRE game as the final boss has that Ganon phase where you need the sword.
I also got the lvl 2 sword witch gave me a lvl 0 sword which does nothing and replaces the regular sword at the beach with the lvl 0 shield for some reason...
Pro tip: a quick way to get into that glitchy dungeon thing where all the wall sprites are water, go to a side scroll area (those areas with the Pirana Plants) and warp glitch one space out of regular gameplay. You will fall off the next screen and end up in that glitchy dungeon. If you navigate right, you can get the Instrument without fighting the boss.
Also, if you warp glitch your way into a wall, but you can still screen transition, you can warp glitch your way again out of the wall.
If you're going to attempt this, don't try to warp glitch your way past the bosses or the regut door to the Instrument as the game will throw you down two screens for some reason, uses the water world trick to navigate your way around the dungeon and enter from another direction

Well Nintendo owns both the Mario series and the Loz series so steal isn't the right word :3
And yes, I think the first appearance of the chain chomp was in yoshis Island which came out before links awakening.

NeoMatrix There has been a lot of Mario references in Zelda games. I think it was also Link's Awakening that had a Yoshi doll as a prize from a crane game, which I believe is needed as the first item in that trade chain. I could be wrong, it's been many years since I've played it, I just remember it being a GB LoZ game that was in.

This method is a good way to start speedrunning the game since the phase of Dethl is vulnerable to the powder unless you get the pixel & RNG perfect quick kill with the sword. Thanks Andy :D

Just so you know,
"running on the spot" or Infinite Dash Glitch is actually useful when mixed up with the sword, because its hitbox then still is active. That is used be some people to kill the Armos Knight quickly for example.
You don't need to dash to get through the turtle head, you can simply press up and left while being on the up right corner of the turtle's head.
Apart from that, cool video! And there are even more crazy stuff going on in the game!

it took me several tries, but i finally did the final boss skip from the video! this is actually the first glitch from this series that i've actually tried, and i'm gonna try and experiment with other games too :3

dunno if it was mentioned in past comments or not, but another way to enter a glitched world, usually leading into dungeon 4 is through the dungeon 1 boss room. After you fall into the hole into the side scroll area, immediately jump up with the feather you'll be ported to a glitch world. last time i remember doing it, it drops you in water, so having the flippers help.

Link's Awakening is my favorite Game Boy title! I've also found that you can get every secret seashell in the game using the doghouse glitch, making it super easy to get the L2 sword!
Wow, i found most those glitches on my own, but i am amazed you didn't have the piece of heart glitch and tail dungeon boss. Piece of heart glitch only works when you pick up the 4th piece to complete a container, before you get the second dialog for completing it, do the a,b,start, select and then save and quit. You get the new heart container and the piece of heart you collected is still there so you can pick it up again. The tail dungeon boss is the same as the glitched areas. when the boss knocks you down the hole, or jump down, use the feather to jump immediately into the top screen and get into the glitched area of tail dungeon. make sure you got flippers for the water passages as there is tons of them.
I haven't played through since the '90s but I recall a few things you missed: The final form of the Nightmare boss only requires one hit from a boomerang. It seems to be a glitch because it often doesn't register when it should. The Dodongos aren't the only sub boss pair you can walk out on early to defeat. You can do it on the two Ghoma/spiders that you hurt with the hook shot and you can do it again to Dodongos later in Turtle Rock. You can save anywhere while obtaining something that costs money and you will have both the item and your money when you resume. You can also save while dying to avoid a death counter increment so that you can still get the special ending (Marin as a seagull).

I actually found the doghouse glitch on accident and it made me smile to see it again
I really enjoy playing around with the doghouse glitch world. I actually had one instance where I was playing with it when Marin was with me, and after I had to save and quit when I got stuck, I reloaded the game and suddenly Marin was the flying rooster, but with an orange color palette. And it wasn't a glitched sprite, it acted like the flying rooster where I could pick it up and it would lift me. It was really odd, but amazing.

The doghouse glitch was my absolute favorite. I don't remember how I found out about it originally, but I keep going back to try out more random numbers of monster kills.
I remember I did the screen warp glitch to beat the game and break it totally some days later after LA DX came out, good ol' glitches :3
You can also get into the glitch world by going to the dungeon 1 boss room, falling down the pit and immediately jumping so you'll move up through the ceiling of the side-scroller room you've entered.
