I'm usually a Guarneri guy, but with a Strad like this -- It has everything. Low end not worse than the greatest Guarneri and of course that golden upper register.
@@DanielKurganov I find the lower register "cello flavoured", some notes if I heard them in isolation I would not be sure if it was a violin or a cello. I never heard that before. (Or is it me getting old??) I don't know how much is the instrument and how much is the violinist for accomplishing that... thank you for this video!

Wow amazing!! I wish there was a full on Stradivari documentary about everything he did from his crafting of fine instruments, to the forests in which he may have harvested his wood from, and his original workshop. Does his shop still exist today? Do we even know where exactly it was?
It was a great idea for Daniel to play this extraordinary instrument before it disappears into the collection of the purchaser, until maybe it is loaned to someone deemed the right person to either preserve and/or showcase it in public. It has a distinctive sound -- round, mellow, human -- that is recognizable as Seidel's violin no matter who is playing it. But Dan really brought out the best in it during this short time with it, and it makes you wonder what he could do with it over months of getting used to it. Violins sound so different depending on the environment, the recording equipment and setup, and the player, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to recognize this instrument when it is played by different people in different rooms, like the Tarisio guy in another video, TwoSet and now Dan. I've heard recordings on TH-cam of student instruments under $1000 that sounded very powerful, full, and good across strings, that I'm sure if were recorded on a stage or in a different room, would sound awful compared to good instrument. Speaking of Strads, I stumbled on a very entertaining 2022 novel recently in my library's online "Hoopla" audio collection, about the hilarious and horrifying vicissitudes of owning a Strad. I've never enjoyed a novel about a violinist and his violin so much. It is THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY by Brendan Slocumb. The main character's experience in this novel sounds implausible. Taken as a whole, combining the story of a violin and a violinist, it probably is, but it doesn't make the novel less fun to read. My own real story, first in music (flute mainly, but I played four other instruments, all self-taught until college due to poverty), and then in something totally different, non-musical, which took me to Brazil and around Central and South America, away from the conservatory in Vienna where I was preparing for the Geneva International Competition, is almost equally hard to believe. Daniel knows about doing something people find hard to believe. I mean, I thought Oliveira had a late start on violin, because he started when he was 9. Just to be assigned a teacher and play in orchestra, I had to play a violin audition in front of him in 1978, just weeks after he won the freaking Tchaikovsky competition, sharing the gold medal. I had the worst musical/mental meltdown I've ever had at an audition. Well, at that point I'd only played the violin for a few months, except for when I was eleven, and taught myself to play on a $3 instrument my father got at an auction. Isn't $3 some kind of auction record for a violin?
The fiddle is in very good condition. I wonder how many times it's been opened? If I were a luthier, I would faint before trying to open something like this Strad. The luthiers who handle these violins are like brain surgeons, with nerves of steel, totally unafraid of making a mistake.
Someone in the next room trying out the Sibelius so, of course, you finish the phrase - why not? I was a little surprised you didn't play the start of the Bruch 1 concerto. Everyone seems to try out violins using that as a "test." :-)
@@violinhunter2 Thats because they aren't warmed up same with Tchaikovsky opening:) Perhaps Bach Gmin or Cmaj (anything slow that let's your hand adjust to the instrument.

Great video...can you comment (if this violin is the best you've played and becomes your ideal), what is the delta between the Strad and your current violin? It would help us choose a violin that may be closer to the ideal even though we are playing on good (enough) instruments. The reason I ask is most of don't get to try a Strad to understand the delta.
I have tried some Strads with more "interesting" upper register, but other than that, this violin pretty much takes the cake. My violin is very different from this one, being a del Gesu model. It has a deep and broad sound, also with great power. The Strad cuts through a bit more. It's just a powerhouse. In some sense, your ability to better shop for instruments by playing something amazing to have a model is dependent on whether you can indeed play the Strad in a way that exploits its amazing capabilities. It takes some time to discover those elements, and then you can indeed search for it (or other things) in other violins. On a basic level, yes, you can get the sound of a good Strad in your ear, surround yourself with 100 good German violins, and see which one 'comes closest" in terms of basic power and richness. However, at the same time, different instruments don't exist on the same linear spectrum. There could a be a good German fiddle that has very different qualities from the Strad, but is still the best fiddle of the group.

My violin is a 1737 del Gesu model. As Andrew explains in my other video which you can check out "Everything a violinist needs to know about maintenance, repair, adjustment...", adjusting a violin isn't "making it sound like X kind of violin" or "to the taste preference of some player". It's essentially technical: how can the post/bar/bridge be so that there is maximal resonance, balance, breadth and clarity to the sound. I wish the alchemy you describe was possible :)

I had the privilege of getting to own a strad copy I found on a auction I got for an awesome deal it had a way better tone than the violin I have now which throws me off every time I play it on the a and e string any tips for getting a better warmer tone on a cheaper violin?
People usually have their preferences, and strings tend to have some generalizable characteristics that are consistent across violins. This violin was set up to have max power, and that it does. The strings are in line with that approach - higher tension, rich, projecting, strong

Yeah, most of the body is barely original on some of these...still can sound great with good repairs. But at a certain point it's a different violin altogether. This particular one is in a good state of preservation.
Scratches don't add to the value of the violin, if anything they take away. These aren't bluejeans in the 90's. The names of great Renaissance painters were given as nicknames to a number of Strads by a famous owner. How is that ridiculous?It's also used now as an identifying marker and also has little to no significance regarding the selling price. What's next - will you explain why da Vinci paintings are not worth half a billion dollars :) ??
@@Martini0621 I’ve never heard anyone claim that a Renaissance painter owned a Strad. If someone thinks Leonardo of Vinci owned a 1714 violin made by Stradivari, they can’t be helped by you or me. This instrument is also known as the Ex-Seidel.
I hope this isn't a dumb question, but do wealthy buyers use these purchases as tax deductions when they donate a Strad to the Strad Society, a school or an individual musician ? If so, just imagine how many entry level instruments could be purchased for $10-$15 million and how many young kids could benefit from that.

Daniel - Please Please don’t use so much of glissando and portamento … it is a bad taste …. And this violin is a wonderful instrument … Glissando can be used but just a little , not all the time
Mr. Monczak, both glissando and portamento are perfectly alright, depending on the period the music comes from. As a violinist and teacher, I teach both to my students and use both in my own playing. Should they be used in Bach and Haendel? No, of course not. However, in Paganini, Brahms, etc. they can be applied in measured quantity. In the compositions of Kreisler for example, it would be sacrilege to not use the same amount that Kreisler himself used. Kreisler, Elman, Heifetz, and others of that era played lushly and beautifully. If you do not like so much, that is your personal preference, but do not condemn others for their use of the enhancements!
@@cletedavis5849 there is such a thing as using glissando/portamento in the ‘right places’ but it still sounds bad. In fact that’s the majority situation. To make glissando beautiful is actually not a very easy thing to do. In fact I think it’s an impossible thing to teach most of the time. It’s one of the most coordinated and felt things about playing, not unlike vibrato. It’s pure nuance and sensitivity. If glissando is beautiful it can be used practically everywhere one desires. I too wouldn’t like glissando if I constantly heard bad versions of it coming out of my and other people’s violins 🤓
I fondly remember my highschool professor HATED Glissando or any slides with a passion, he referred to it as "Fishing for notes" and forbid me or anything of my peers from using it. I did it anyway and I knew him being a contrabass player he had an elitist mindset that I enjoyed to mess with.

Thank you for this! It made my day. I love all of your videos and your feelings about Toscha Seidel but this one is the most meaningful to me. Very few people still remember Seidel; they don't realize that there was a contemporary of Heifitz who was considered an equal of his. When I grew to be big enough for a full-size violin, my parents bought my violin directly from Seidel. Obviously, a way lesser instrument than his Strad, I was told that he occasionally used it when playing with an orchestra. Fortunately, I kept it though I stopped playing for about 60 years. I recently picked it up and you've been helping me work on some of my skills.
One more anecdote: When my parents bought my violin, my father jokingly told him that they would buy it if he would promise that their daughter would be able to play as well as he did. Seidel was offended. I gather that that was typical of his personality, no sense of humor. Thank you for your reply. It made my day. BTW, I'm finding Sevcik to be very clear and helpful

What do you have to say about the Paris blind tests, where none of the experts assembled could reliably pick the Strads from modern instruments of good quality?
It’s an interesting test for sure, and proves that modern instruments can be of the highest quality and suitable for demanding soloists. There are some issues with that test of course…for example, none of the old instruments were allowed to be adjusted, and strings weren’t allowed to be changed, so you don’t know whether they are in their best playing condition. Also it takes some time to truly discover what these instruments can do. Ask anyone that plays one, they’ll say about a year or so. There’s also instrument fatigue, which can often happen when you’re shopping for a violin, for example-meaning that you stop being as sensitive to the particularities of an instrument. Without that sensitivity you risk chopping special qualities of any instrument, new or old. All of that being said, I’m a big believer in modern instruments, I love mine, and I think they’re almost at the same level as the best Strads and Guarneris.
@@DanielKurganov Totally agree, for having had the chance to try and play on very good quality instruments, including Strads, Del Gesu, Tononi, Gagliano... and their modern copies by excellent current luthiers (some are currently talking about the second golden age of lutherie...); Some modern instruments are at least as good as the great Italians. It's not bashing to say it, and it doesn't detract from the near-perfect build quality of some Strads (even if they've been tweaked a lot over the years...)

@@danijel3227 Most makers will tell you that the best of them have not yet matched the finest Guarneri del Gesu and Stradivari instruments. They can match Guadignini on a really good day. The differences in sound are of course subtle and for many indistinguishable, but for a violinist the differences in playability are more apparent, particularly if one spends some time with an instrument like this to discover what it allows. I love my violin, and its maker is one of the greatest out there today, but the finest Strads and Guarneris are immediately discernible to me.
Next step: buyer lends it to Daniel for lifetime

One of my grandpa's friends was Seidel's stand partner in Las Vegas, where Seidel spent his last years.

How do they know what kind of strings to install to bring out the best sound? Is it just a long trial-and-error process?
People usually have their preferences, and strings tend to have some generalizable characteristics that are consistent across violins. This violin was set up to have max power, and that it does. The strings are in line with that approach - higher tension, rich, projecting, strong

I don't hope at all. she sounds fantastic on her two Vuillaumes. As evidenced by his latest video of the Tchaikovsky concerto, perhaps one of the most beautiful violins I have ever heard.

Isn't the neck lengthened and the base bar replaced from original?
The thing that determines the value of the instrument is the body all the parts ie pegs, fingerboard, tailpiec, base bar, neck, etc are replacable.
Yeah, most of the body is barely original on some of these...still can sound great with good repairs. But at a certain point it's a different violin altogether. This particular one is in a good state of preservation.

Scratches don't add to the value of the violin, if anything they take away. These aren't bluejeans in the 90's. The names of great Renaissance painters were given as nicknames to a number of Strads by a famous owner. How is that ridiculous?It's also used now as an identifying marker and also has little to no significance regarding the selling price. What's next - will you explain why da Vinci paintings are not worth half a billion dollars :) ??
@@Martini0621 I’ve never heard anyone claim that a Renaissance painter owned a Strad. If someone thinks Leonardo of Vinci owned a 1714 violin made by Stradivari, they can’t be helped by you or me. This instrument is also known as the Ex-Seidel.
I hope this isn't a dumb question, but do wealthy buyers use these purchases as tax deductions when they donate a Strad to the Strad Society, a school or an individual musician ? If so, just imagine how many entry level instruments could be purchased for $10-$15 million and how many young kids could benefit from that.

Mr. Monczak, both glissando and portamento are perfectly alright, depending on the period the music comes from. As a violinist and teacher, I teach both to my students and use both in my own playing. Should they be used in Bach and Haendel? No, of course not. However, in Paganini, Brahms, etc. they can be applied in measured quantity. In the compositions of Kreisler for example, it would be sacrilege to not use the same amount that Kreisler himself used. Kreisler, Elman, Heifetz, and others of that era played lushly and beautifully. If you do not like so much, that is your personal preference, but do not condemn others for their use of the enhancements!
@@cletedavis5849 there is such a thing as using glissando/portamento in the ‘right places’ but it still sounds bad. In fact that’s the majority situation. To make glissando beautiful is actually not a very easy thing to do. In fact I think it’s an impossible thing to teach most of the time. It’s one of the most coordinated and felt things about playing, not unlike vibrato. It’s pure nuance and sensitivity. If glissando is beautiful it can be used practically everywhere one desires. I too wouldn’t like glissando if I constantly heard bad versions of it coming out of my and other people’s violins 🤓
I fondly remember my highschool professor HATED Glissando or any slides with a passion, he referred to it as "Fishing for notes" and forbid me or anything of my peers from using it. I did it anyway and I knew him being a contrabass player he had an elitist mindset that I enjoyed to mess with.
I'm a cellist and I'm very glad that the use of glissando has been curtailed. It sounds showy and old fashioned- like a swoon from a too tight corset.
The sound is fairly flat, many more modern Strad copies are better (as has been proven time and again in double blind tests). It's just a hype!

Thank you for this! It made my day. I love all of your videos and your feelings about Toscha Seidel but this one is the most meaningful to me. Very few people still remember Seidel; they don't realize that there was a contemporary of Heifitz who was considered an equal of his. When I grew to be big enough for a full-size violin, my parents bought my violin directly from Seidel. Obviously, a way lesser instrument than his Strad, I was told that he occasionally used it when playing with an orchestra. Fortunately, I kept it though I stopped playing for about 60 years. I recently picked it up and you've been helping me work on some of my skills.
One more anecdote: When my parents bought my violin, my father jokingly told him that they would buy it if he would promise that their daughter would be able to play as well as he did. Seidel was offended. I gather that that was typical of his personality, no sense of humor. Thank you for your reply. It made my day. BTW, I'm finding Sevcik to be very clear and helpful

What do you have to say about the Paris blind tests, where none of the experts assembled could reliably pick the Strads from modern instruments of good quality?
It’s an interesting test for sure, and proves that modern instruments can be of the highest quality and suitable for demanding soloists. There are some issues with that test of course…for example, none of the old instruments were allowed to be adjusted, and strings weren’t allowed to be changed, so you don’t know whether they are in their best playing condition. Also it takes some time to truly discover what these instruments can do. Ask anyone that plays one, they’ll say about a year or so. There’s also instrument fatigue, which can often happen when you’re shopping for a violin, for example-meaning that you stop being as sensitive to the particularities of an instrument. Without that sensitivity you risk chopping special qualities of any instrument, new or old. All of that being said, I’m a big believer in modern instruments, I love mine, and I think they’re almost at the same level as the best Strads and Guarneris.
@@DanielKurganov Totally agree, for having had the chance to try and play on very good quality instruments, including Strads, Del Gesu, Tononi, Gagliano... and their modern copies by excellent current luthiers (some are currently talking about the second golden age of lutherie...); Some modern instruments are at least as good as the great Italians.
It's not bashing to say it, and it doesn't detract from the near-perfect build quality of some Strads (even if they've been tweaked a lot over the years...)

@@danijel3227 Most makers will tell you that the best of them have not yet matched the finest Guarneri del Gesu and Stradivari instruments. They can match Guadignini on a really good day. The differences in sound are of course subtle and for many indistinguishable, but for a violinist the differences in playability are more apparent, particularly if one spends some time with an instrument like this to discover what it allows. I love my violin, and its maker is one of the greatest out there today, but the finest Strads and Guarneris are immediately discernible to me.
