Finally someone who ranks awesome GBA games I’ve never heard of or played. I was starting to think all of the lists were the same with some filler. Some of my personal favorites that weren’t mentioned are: Advanced Wars, the Pokémon Red Mystery Dungeon, the Legend Of Zelda Minish Cap. The latter two getting plenty of credit from everyone already.
If you're looking for a good game along those lines, I recommend a game called Rhapsody. It was originally on PS1, but there's also a port on DS. It's on the simple side, but the music is amazing.
Do games like the core Pokémon series where you catch the monsters to recruit them count, or only specifically ones where you convince them to join you?
I mentioned world of final fantasy and smt, both count, (world of final fantasy monster recruitment is similar to pokemon with some differences.) I just said the 1 per franchise so it doesn't end up full of pokemon, digimon or other long going "monster" series.
I was planning to play Magical Starsing, but after watching this video, I'll play Magical Vacation first, I didn't even know it existed! Thank you, hopefully I will like it!
Shining Soul 2 is my most favorite GBA game next to Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. They just don't make multiplayer games like they used to. Nice list 👍
@@SonicNinja6600 Yes Shining Soul 1 has really dead game look. But Shining Soul 2 is more alive game but can't play 3-4 players on Multiplayer Emulators with Online connection. Even 2 Player mode is very laggy and has input delay i think MGBA Emu Developers should optimize game better. It's possible.
I agree. Definitely one of the hardest games to netplay for some reason. Hopefully Sega and Atlus will allow Nintendo to put it on Switch Online. It would be a dream come true. That or a remaster. 😳
The Golden Sun series is just too cool! I feel like there has never been anything quite like it. It's just weird how I started with Dark Dawn first without knowing it was a sequel to the other two. I beat the first one, too. But still have yet to complete Lost Age.
So I’ve been out of work for months and had to sell my PC, all my games and all my consoles. All I have is an iPhone 6s. I haven’t played a game since the summer. I found an emulator for SNES/NES/GB/GBC/GBA/SMS/GG for my phone that uses on-screen touch controls. Basically anything not turn-based/menu-based is out of the question. I’ve never been into JRPGs outside of Pokémon Yellow and FFX. Now I’m forced to discover JRPGs. This video is for me. Thank you 🙏
We haven't got all Fire Emblem games since. Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem was only in Japan. I don't know if we'll ever get it officially because that was a remake and Nintendo's not really known for doing multiple remakes outside Mario and Zelda.
we did get the remake of fe gaiden, and earthbound beginnings, so maybe in the future there will be more games in the "echo's" series, that's modernized remakes of games before awakening? or other games that were originally japan exclusive? I think the fact people made fan trans is a good indicator that there's a demand for them. purely conjecture though.
@TheWhiteFang284 I know all about emulation yo ho ho it's a pirates life for me. :3 But you still have to hope that someone will translate the game in the first place. Absolute Zero Productions the person behind the fan translations of Tales of Phantasia PS1,Tales of the Tempest and Tales of Innocence called it quits in February. They were and are the only fan translation team that was working on Tales of Destiny Director's Cut,Tales of Destiny 2,Tales of Rebirth,Tales of Phantasia X,Tales of Phantasia Nakiri Dungeon X and Tales of Hearts DS. Then with the release of Shin Megami Tensei If... Aeon Genesis Productions said due to the harassment they're not going to do anymore Megami Tensei translations. At least they handed over the work done on Kyuku Megami Tensei, while Absolute Zero Productions just hit delete on all their work done. He really believes that not only is the fan base not big enough for the hassle (Isn't Tales bigger now than ever?) he really thinks Namco Bandai will officially localize all of them. They didn't localize Tales of Rebirth in 2005 because it was a 2D game but the racism assessed in a realistic manor would be too much for westerners. Yeah because we got better with that subject lol.
well, some games win and some games loose.fe12 pretty much won tho, since it has an abnormaly big fanbase for fe games that arent 7,awakening or fates and it even got picked up by some translators who arent english(i know nobody actually cares about that, but the german translation was released a little while ago,so the fanbase of fe12 will only grow).as a matter of fact, the only game that is largely forgotten in the fe series is bs fe(only game that does not have a full english translation)
It's wild looking back to see how much of my GBA library was just Pokémon and a bunch of ports. This is something I plan to rectify very soon, but I did play a few original titles, namely Final Fantasy Tactics Advance which, in spite of its name, is NOT a port if the classic PSone title, but a wonderful and wholly original tactical RPG I strongly recommend. Now, time to play some of those original GBA RPGs!
Good shit Dave, Been awhile since I've commented on any of your videos. Like I said before when I last commented in a previous video. I was always interested in your reviews because of the obscurity of the line-up of games. Good to see you focused strictly on Original games instead of ports, that's why your reviews are always gold. Everyone always has the same top 10, but your top 10 are always different & fresh. Never centered around an already established series of games & established standards, but centered by your personal taste & variety. It's always refreshing to see your reviews man. Again, Good Shit Dave 👍
Thank you for that! When I'm compiling my list I always try very hard to ensure there's a variety of different genres and that one series (Final Fantasy) doesn't dominate the list.
It's funny you say Golden Sun 2 is your favorite of the two, I much prefer the first one. The second one really starts to drag out near the middle and becomes a chore to play IMO.
Thank you for putting the OG (US release) Fire Emblem on here. Just finished replaying it yesterday and gotta say it’s still my fav, having played all the US released FEs. Anyone curious about going back to older FE games like this I highly recommend. EVEN if you hate permadeath (though I HIGHLY recommend learning to love permadeath in FE games as well). You know you’re gonna emulate it anyway, you filthy pirates, and you can just use save states as a makeshift divine pulse 😂
So now that they released on NSO, I tried, I REALLY tried to give Golden Sun 1&2 a go. But wow, these games start SLOOOOOW and David's actually one of my main inspirations to recognize shortcomings of games. When my party started defending on their turns, I thought it was a glitch, then I realized that they weren't retargeting when an enemy died. Plus the story kept dragging to go with the awfully slow pacing. If I had played them when they first released, it would have been a different story for me. Today's me has no time for them unfortunately...
I really like your list. I didn't expect Earthbound to be so high on the list. I'm curious why you choose the second DBZ game. I know the first one has major flaws, but the third should be better than the second. Personally i would rank Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald as number 1. I just love the simple gameplay and the addicting monster catching. Other games i would have picked: Zone of the Enders: The First of Mars, Bomberman Tournament and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. These were the games i played the most and enjoyed them very much. Also, i have Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand somewhere lying around. In case you don't know: The game cartridge has an build in light sensor, which replenishes stuff in the game. Without sunlight, you cannot beat the game. I got this game on Christmas. I was never able to finish it back then due the lack of sunlight, never bothered again, i was just too frustrated with the whole design. And the fact, that you cannot see anything if you take your vanilla GameBoy Advance outside. 🤷♂️
fire emblem my baby my first tactics game my first contact with the franchise i love everything in this game the stories was good the character was absolutely perfect the game was hard but well done and you even can have your "avatar" this game will be forever in my heart
If you, by any chance, like me, suffer from depression, I BESEECH you, don't play MOTHER 3. It made me cry 2 days in a row, followed by a month of full depression, after finishing it and viewing the ending. The ending... God... :'(
I would add Onimusha Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance as honorable mentions at least to your list. But FFTA would get top 3 on my list for sure. I couldn't make a top 10 RPGs on GBA without Final Fantasy and Breath of FIre because I haven't played enough GBA RPGs without them. I would enjoy a similar video for the DS and 3DS. The PSP video brought some good games to my attention.
Golden Sun Fanbase(Biest Side) When somebody even remotely criticizes any of the games: Come on there's only three games with a unanswered cliff hanger cheer up you emo
Ach ja die beiden Golden Sun Spiele sind einfach das Beste was man zocken kann was Umfang anbelangt und Handlung teil eins und zwei gehören beide zusammen sind ein Spiel
Lufia 2 on the snes has the same style dungeon puzzles as Golden Sun 2. It's probably the jrpg I found to be the most fun on snes just because of the dungeons and puzzles.
I love the GBA and the games it has on there. I'll admit I haven't played all of the games on the list and some are definitely intriguing. I'm happy that Sword of Mana got a shout-out though. There's something about that game I'm in love with. I guess it's the Mana-esque feel it has plus the ability to change classes and being able to grind while not needing to. So if I ever feel the need to get Black Rabites, I can totally do that. ;)
Hey David. I'm getting huge nostalgia from watching these videos. Can you suggest if we want to play these games today without the original console, how would we go about? I dont necessarily want to use emulators.
Impressed magical vacation is on this list, though if your someone who doesn't like fan translations, try the other release of magical starsign, which is utterly beautiful and having boss battles that use both the screens on the ds - and these games are made by the company who made mother 3 if that pikes your interest. Personally mother 3 is over hyped though frankly I played them really late and by then other games that looked and felt decidedly more polished had been played and maybe I missed out by not playing it at the right time, which to be fair is the same for any pick on this list.
Magical Vacation was a real deception. It started quite well, thecombat system is fun when you get it, but near the end of the game it totally forces you to level up for hours if you want to kill a random battle enemy. That sucks. Didnt finish it.

Zelda games are not RPGs, that's why minish cap isn't included in this list
I want to see a top 10 monster recruitment centered rpgs, like world of final fantasy, shin megami tensei and such. oh, and 1 per franchise.
That's a good idea, I'll think about it!
jade Cocoon 2
If you're looking for a good game along those lines, I recommend a game called Rhapsody. It was originally on PS1, but there's also a port on DS. It's on the simple side, but the music is amazing.
Do games like the core Pokémon series where you catch the monsters to recruit them count, or only specifically ones where you convince them to join you?
I mentioned world of final fantasy and smt, both count, (world of final fantasy monster recruitment is similar to pokemon with some differences.) I just said the 1 per franchise so it doesn't end up full of pokemon, digimon or other long going "monster" series.
Now I'm gonna play Mother 3 again.
Nice vid. I love a good play session of Mario and Luigi Games
1:01 ITS OK, IM USED TO IT...
DARK SOULS
I was planning to play Magical Starsing, but after watching this video, I'll play Magical Vacation first, I didn't even know it existed! Thank you, hopefully I will like it!
Mother 3 is my all time favorite game!
But I'm sad to see no Pokemon on the list ;-;
Shining Soul 2 is my most favorite GBA game next to Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. They just don't make multiplayer games like they used to. Nice list 👍
How about Shining Soul One? It's great if you play as Wizard but rest characters are hard to play
I only played the first 2 chapters as Ranger and although it's a bit slower than 2, the groundwork is still there. 2 is just superior in every way.
Mother 3 is a FANTASTIC game!
It's definitely one of the best out there!
Thank you 🙏
You are a true gamer, my friend. Great video.
Both Golden Sun games rule! @w@
We haven't got all Fire Emblem games since. Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem was only in Japan. I don't know if we'll ever get it officially because that was a remake and Nintendo's not really known for doing multiple remakes outside Mario and Zelda.
I wasn't aware of that, thanks for telling me!
we did get the remake of fe gaiden, and earthbound beginnings, so maybe in the future there will be more games in the "echo's" series, that's modernized remakes of games before awakening? or other games that were originally japan exclusive? I think the fact people made fan trans is a good indicator that there's a demand for them. purely conjecture though.
@TheWhiteFang284 I know all about emulation yo ho ho it's a pirates life for me. :3
But you still have to hope that someone will translate the game in the first place.
DBZ LOG2/Buu’s fury one of my fav all time fav games
No pokémon in the GBA ?
It's obvious but essential
Good Shit Dave!
This liat is interesting. More GBA RPG hidden gems that I found from this video. Thank you
YOU GOT MY SUB AND LIKE AS SOON AS #7 DROPPED
Just discovered your channel. Love your work. You have a new sub
Thank you for the suggestions!
I was honestly not expecting you to put mmbn2 in the list it really is one of the best combat systems that I've played
all the battle network games are great 🤙🏻
It's funny you say Golden Sun 2 is your favorite of the two, I much prefer the first one. The second one really starts to drag out near the middle and becomes a chore to play IMO.
I love this.
We love you David! 🤗
Thought I'd watch some of the older vids on this channel and he's got me loading up the GBA Emulator 😂😊
Love to see some love to Golden Sun!!!
Thank you for putting the best in first place!
David!! Thank you for the recommendations!!!
when u get to ds i expect dragon quest monsters joker, that game is so rad, also golden sun is so good
Finally a video that doesn't include popular games I completed 3 years ago.
He didn't mention Oriental blue which has an English translation as well
I've completed summon night 1 and 2 and all i can say is it's so awesome man glad it got here
Thanks for the list davidvinc! I’m going to have to check these out.
I'd put Riviera in there.
Get a 2ds/3ds, mod it and you've got enough gaming goodness for decades. The amount of amazing rpgs between 3ds, ds and gba is unreal.
Enjoyed the countdown hope to see more in the future :)
I've never even seen Shining Soul before wtf. It looks so good.
It is, try it!
Finally someone put summon night in the list, my fav GBA game 🥰
fire emblem my baby my first tactics game my first contact with the franchise i love everything in this game the stories was good the character was absolutely perfect the game was hard but well done and you even can have your "avatar" this game will be forever in my heart
I love mother 3, but oh boy I played all 6 Megaman Battle Network more then 3 times
yeah megaman is the bomb
best gba game for me
Loving this top videos !
I love the mario RpG series the freedom of the gameplay reminds me of the one in the Kingdom hearts main series
Golden Sun Fanbase(Biest Side) When somebody even remotely criticizes any of the games: Come on there's only three games with a unanswered cliff hanger cheer up you emo
I was really hoping you'd mention Golden Sun and you Delivered!! 😄😄😄
I just finished Mother 3 today. It's a great game.
Thanks david just modded my 3ds and wanted to play some games I mised on the gba as a kid
Love the list, good video! :) Admit-ably, I'm a lil salty about the exclusion of Advance Wars, but still amazing fun video.
Excellent list
Thanks again! 😄
I want to play mother 3 so bad! Why won’t they release it in the US?!
Can’t say that battle network 2 is the best. My personal favorite is 3
Megaman Battle Network is the greatest series of all time hands down
Jasper A Santiago absolutely! battle network 3 is life
The super robot wars series, summon night, zoids legacy and golden sun are my faves.
Ninjas was giving trunks that business in the corner
I read that exactly when it was happening
1:08 - Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 is the best 🥇 on this list! I hope they make a remake!
The GBA had a large library of games and many of them were great 👍
