- As the title states, I think I fixed the issues with James Yeager's lights. Ever since James announced that he had talked Surefire into making his special light, there has been great anticipation for it to get released. At Shot Show the light was introduced to the marked and again a lot of people were taking notice of it. I ordered one through Optics Planet and had a discount code that brought the total down to $120. I figured that was a deal I couldn't pass up. Well, I have had the light here for a few days and have already had a few issues. This video shows those issues and offers some insight into how to fix them. Wow, so you bought the wrong light for you application and then made a 18 min video explaining how you assembled an entirely new light to your preferences from the body? Why didn't you just buy a light with the specs that you want?

Just watched the end. Honestly wouldn't have put it past the youtube tacticool community to make a vid just like yours without the "JK" at the end. I personally don't like the tactician because I think a tactical light should be able to access high without any manipulation. The EDCL1-T is a superior tactical light IMO, but the tactician is certainly a viable model.

I agree with you on the 16650. Once I learned of this, I have been giving the Tactician a closer look. I love my 2l-x and hl-x tho.
I’m loving the rechargeable Tactician, the 2l-x is a close second though. Both are great choices. I guess it comes down to budget and your specific needs.
Thanks for the info, I want a clicky for mine, also a better pocket clip like the two way one on the other lights. Sucks that a flashlight this expensive needs mods. I’m really considering returning mine. I like the wide throw and size better than the other Surefire edcs. My other gripe is that they’re only rated IPX4. I’ve had a Quark Turbo for the past 5 years and it’s been through a lot and still kicking ass. Guess I will keep using it.
Hmm, where can one find a two way clip for the Tactician, I want to carry it head down since I am using a Raven Pocket Shield?

How does the lumen output compare with the 16650 vs the 123’s? I have been interested in picking some up
If you haven’t already then check out the video I released today and last Wednesday. Last weeks video was the 16650 and today’s video was the 123s. Lumen wise, I can’t tell a real difference.

A clicky tail cap is something I like with the tactician. I simply used the tail cap from my e2dled defender and now I can stand it up with it on and the wide beam is great as a candle. When you took the head off, I thought whats this guy doing? lol Fun video and a thumbs up.

Everything you changed is what makes it the Tactician. I've had this light since late January and have carried ever since. Most low light self defense classes are taught with momentary ideology. The wide spill or flood gives you a broader view of whats immediately around you. It's promoted as a delf defense or gun fight light. I wouldn't change a thing... well except the lanyard, I made my own using a bungy like camping cord. For a light thats more useful for household chores or basic non defensive use (Most everything) I do prefer the Olight S30r III... that's a more practical light but to carry with my gun, it's the Tactician!

Caleb Downing Well shoot lol. You got me! I use a rechargeable battery also but the 16650 I've heard loses lumens due to a lower voltage. I use veeki rcr123a batteries, the voltage is higher and the brightness seems the same. Never the less you had me fooled. New sub.

Caleb Downing yes actually I saw it yesterday, good info. I'm not a battery expert at all but trying to learn more. From what I'm gathering the 16650 fully charged is 4.2 but when using cr123a primaries stacked, you have 6 volts. The mah time is the same but due to the lower voltage of the l6650 ion battery you lose brightness but not time. Now when you stack the rcr123a batteries each one is also 4.2 so you get a bigger voltage of 8.4. Depending on the circuitry some lights can't handle the higher voltage but higher end lights can. The surefire can and from what i understand its a direct current so it reaches the 800 or better lumens with the 6 to 8 volts but won't with just 4.2. How much less i don't know, i tried one once and noticed it was slightly dimmer but not that much less... using the 2x rcr123a seems to match up the primaries much better. Sorry for the ramble, but there's more info out than can better explain than i can. I may be wrong but its what i understood.

Cool video. I was considering the Surefire Tactition but i didn't like the UI and didn't like the Maxvision beam. I like my lights to have a bit more tighter hotspot beam for better light throw. I love the Olight M1X Striker. The UI is perfect for me and it has a great light throw. You just basically converted your Tactician into the Olight M1X Striker. It now has the same UI and features of the Olight.
Did you watch the whole video? Most of the things I changed were a joke 😂 Ive been rocking the Tactician as is since I got it. I guess the only real change would be running the rechargeables vs the regular batteries.
I’ve heard quite a few folks bring up the Olights, I may end up having to try one of them out.
@@CalebDowning I'm not putting the Tactician down. I like Surefire flashlights overall. I just like other models of Surefire better than the Tactition. I'll probably get the Surefire Fury DF and the EDCL2T. I'm really interested in those two models. And yes i should have known you were joking around with the mods you were making. 😁

The tailcap isn’t a clicky because it’s designed to be used with the Rogers/Surefire syringe technique. Makes sense, huh...Surefire light, Surefire technique that’s taught at just about every tactical pistol course that covers low-light techniques?

Seems like a thyrm switchback would help with your hand fatigue issue. But mostly it seems like the Yeager light isn't for you. It's not for me either at that price point.

Ok, just checking. I do like the light and with the rechargeable battery it is one of my favorite carry lights. It isn’t cheap though that’s for sure. But for what you get, it is quality. I hear ya though.
@@CalebDowning They could've just revamped their Max Vision Combat light with a high/low twist function and it's basically the same light and already has the momentary/click feature. Oh well.

This light would have been the new mouse trap... back in the day...it’s not designed as an EDC it’s a weapon/defensive tactical light...
Buy yourself a MAG light.... for civilians. Yeager did one hell of a job on his input and design to Surefire. Kudos to him.
@Rockb that’s pretty long for “no comment” 😆 I agree with you, I think. This light is rock solid and awesome for what it’s designed to do. I’ve been carrying it every day since I got it. I don’t know if you saw the end of the video but that might have clarified my opinion on the light 😉
I like the 123 lithium batteries because a pair of them last me for years.
It all depends on how often you use the light I guess. If money wasn’t an option I’d stick with Surefire 123A’s 👌
I believe the Streamlight Protac 2L-X is really really hard to beat in this class of torches. Olight's customer service sucks and I will never buy another Olight. Only non-USA light I'd consider is NiteCore. Other than that it's Streamlight and Surefire for me. But Surefire's price is not justifiable IMO. And honestly the rechargeable 18650 is a superior selling point for Streamlight than any feature that Surefire has. The only Surefire light I own is the XC1. If you have the original XC1-A you can request an RMA by stating it has an issue with it where it will just turn off completely while in constant on mode or do a flicker from the recoil or even a dry fire trigger press. They will send you the updated XC1-B as a warranty replacement.
Have you tried the 16650 rechargeables? I didn’t even know they existed until a couple of months ago.
Ok, yah just seeing that at the end of your video. I don't own any lights that use x2 CR123 currently. I like to stick to AA or AAA lights that I can use eneelops in personally. I have only a weapon light that uses x1 CR123 and a key chain 4sevens Mini Mk II that uses a RCR123. I really want to avoid CR123 all together because I am a rechargeable fanatic. Your review of the Protac 2L-X has peaked my interest more than any other light in this class. 4sevens is rebranded under darksucks.com. I'm anxious to see what they do in the future. I'll keep the 16650 in mind.
streamlight is made in china. great lights though. ive been a loyal fan/customer for over 10 years.
im a big 4sevens fan as well. the mini mk II and the preon are in my top 5 favorite edc lights.
ive got a bunch of eneloops also and like standard batteries. they wont get you the high output though but some lights will also run 10440 and 14500 li ion batteries and double or triple the lumens. for example the streamlight microstream with a button top 10440 jumps from 45 lumens to 300ish. most single aa lights run around 130 lumens and jump to 5-700ish with a 14500. my favorite there is the eagletac d25a ti
what i REALLY like about streamlight is what i liked about 4sevens with the user configurable interface. i like high only, high/low, high/strobe/low
Appreciate your views on the subject...but...what you ended up is NOT a tactical light, although it may fit your needs. Here is why:
1) On a tactical light you DON'T want a constant on. People have gotten killed because the constant on went on inadvertently or the got shot while the constant on and the light ended up shining on them and allowing the bad guy to finish them off.
2) You DON'T want rechargeable batteries because as Murphy's law will prove, they run out of juice at the worst possible time.
3) You DO want a fall / fight proof clip that will not work when subjected to blows, pulling and dragging through rocks, pavement or wherever you may end up during a fight. The clip on the Surefire Tactician is certainly not designed for fine cotton dress pants but for thick, heavy, military trousers that will stand up for combat or rough use.
4) You DON'T want a hot spot but a wall of light that will not miss your assailant, will disorient him and will light up any area where he may hide or try to take cover. You also want to light up any other bad guys that are near him and blind them. Thing of a curtain of light, or a wave that won't miss the field of vision, like a hot spot may.
James Yeager is all about close quarter fighting and hand-to-hand combat. His views are not necessarily those of a civilian looking for an EDC light for daily use and the Surefire Tactician, as you've pointed out may not be the best choice for that.
As with everything else, including weapons and optics, the question we need to ask is what is the mission (objective) and choose accordingly. It's not a matter of getting upset or offended, but to accept contrasting views on a subject and respect everyone's opinion on a subject .

The most important lesson I got from your video is that we should not be afraid of modifying our equipment to fit OUR needs, whatever they happen to be. I did forget to mention that the Surefire EB2 clips are VERY easy to break and I think that may be why Yeager went with the one he did. Thanks!

damn i was hoping youd want to sell the tactician head and tailcap hahaha.
i put the tactician head and tailcap on my e2d body so i get deep carry bezel down and its perfect for me. i also run the orbtronic 16650.
my e2d didnt like the 16650 but my g2x, fury, and elzetta bravo m60 and avs run fine with it. the e2d is not my backup emergency light with the tactician body and non rechargeable cr123a's.
i love streamlight and was going to get the 2lx because i have a few extra 18650s. i like olight and almost picked up the m2t over the 2lx. the problem was i WANTED the tactician and the streamlight and olight are better buys but id still wish i had the tactician. ended up being perfect for me.
i didnt carry my e2d much because of the crenelated bezel and tailcap. i prefer the ui on the tactician also
No way man, I'm not selling this thing ;) I don't know if I mentioned it in the video but I got it off Optics Planet with a coupon for $119. At that price, I couldn't pass it up. I'm still playing around with the 16650's but so far I am very impressed.
It would be awesome if Surefire sold the Tactician head separately, I'd put it on my Scout setup.
looking at a graph on cpf the 16650 stayed brighter way longer and more steady than non rechargeable batteries.
i got mine from midway. it was on sale for 125 and 5 dollar shipping so 130 bucks but it was in stock and i really wanted it so i bit the bullet and got it. glad i did because its my favorite light now. i like it so much i gave my mom my fury pro with thrym switchback lol
You should NEVER consider "holding someone at gun point" . If they are a threat to you, defend until they are no longer a threat. If they want to run away, let him or her run. Let the cops do the cop stuff. The longer you are holding someone at gun point the more you are keeping yourself and possibly others in harms way.

I did a run time test on it and the thing went over 2 hours on one of those 16650 rechargeables. The data got messed up so I’ll have to do it again for a follow up video. I did it for y’all man, well not totally for y’all. I do have to agree with you that Surefire is over the top priced. I still love my Streamlights and will stick with them to the end. I use Thrunite 18650 batteries and charger but I don’t have any of their lights right now. For some reason the Tactician just got me. I had that E2E way back in high school and absolutely loved it. My only issue at the time with the E2E was that it couldn’t use rechargeables and wasn’t LED. When the Tactician came along it was kind of the light I had been originally looking for back when I got the E2E, so I had to bite. Thanks for the feedback man! I have several other non-Surefire lights that I’ll be doing shorter “Wednesday style” reviews on so stay tuned for those.

Ok. First, the clip will NOT tear up your pants. Been using mine for 6 months. Secondly, the light is meant for clearing out a room. A wall of light, for a close proximity. Putting a cheap knock off head on a light like that makes no sense. Just buy a pocket thrower.

Why did you even buy that flashlight Its obviously purpose driven in design. Stuff like the 18650 battery he probably didn't want that battery because 18650 batteries give no warning that there almost out of power they just go dead. Momentary only has its reasons as well. Haha, well I got the light because I loved the size and feel of it. I thought I said that in the video, maybe not. Check out the other videos I did on this light and the difference between standard and rechargeable
batteries. I was surprised the their difference and how the results were different than the standard internet answer.
