Owning Fuji’s insanely good 33mm f/1.4, I have no interest in this lens, but I watch your vids anyway, because of the great shots. I like it how you shoot ordinary subjects which at first glance would be uninteresting or even ugly, and than turn the image into something beautiful through light and composition. Inspirational!
I, too, won't be replacing the XF 33mm with anything like this, but this lens does offer an interesting value proposition. I appreciate the kind words about the images I make with these lenses. Honestly, for almost everyone in almost every situation, a lens like this is enough to create the images they want.
Great review! So thorough as always. Am looking forward to your comparison to Fuji’s lenses, since this is the lens type I need to solve most. Am ditching my XF27mm. I have the XF33 which is amazing but I don’t take it w me every day.
The main competitor to this lens is the new TTArtisan 35mm f1.8 mk II, which I believe has a lower retail price and has a metal build. I already placed an order for this Viltrox lens, but I plan to get the TTArtisan lens since I am a fan of their 56mm f1.8 which I currently own.
What a waste of money getting 2 35mm lens. This is why mft is excellent especially if you're a lens hoarder cos at least you have multiple focal lengths to get and theyre all reasonably priced
@brownwallet942 I like my APS-C system. Also I buy and sell gear all the time since I like to test things and that is the only way I can do it (no camera stores/place to rent gear where I live). Finally, I like to support these companies. Viltrox has been producing top tier lenses for about half the price of more expensive offerings. TTArtisan is caughting up too, and sadly Sigma and Tamron are only focused on releasing full frame lenses as of now.
Nice quick review. I have to say that the opinions on this lens caught me by surprise! I'm curious to see your comparison to the other 35mm options. Please also compare the light transmission (or shutter speed) between each lenses. If this lens is really that good I might sell both the Fuji XF 35mm f/2 WR and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and get this small, cheap in-between lens.
Right? I really miss the aperture ring on every single one of these little lenses that I try. I guess this is the Viltrox way of making the same lens for several mounts and distinguishing it from their "pro" line.
Optically, this is FAR superior to Viltrox's 33mm f/1.4. Unless you really need the extra 2/3 of a stop for shallower depth of field or light gathering, I wouldn't even consider the older Viltrox lens.
I try not to make judgements on perceptual things like that. Typically, that "pop" is really only visible in certain situations on any lens, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. The Fujifilm XF 33mm seems to offer this quite a bit more if that's something you're interested in.
This Viltrox looks pretty impressive, but does anyone know how it compares to the TTArtisan 35mm f1.8 II? That one’s smaller, cheaper, and also has a metal body. Kinda stuck choosing!
really tempted but the purple fringing puts me off, tend to mainly shoot brutalist architecture and there's a lot of contrast between buildings and sky... what do you think ? thanks Simon
At 5:18 he does say sharpness is better in the centre and corners than Fujifilm's 35mm f2 lenses and since the XC35mm has the same optical elements as the XC35mm then I assume that's why he's boxing them in the same sentence
Please put the PRO quality into small lens. Nowadays Fujifilm is not a budget choice anymore. Many care about quality and aesthetics over rest of the things and we don't mind adding few hundreds more for the aperture ring, metal build and weather sealing. Please if any company wise enough, stop producing cheap plastic one. And there're some focal length more in need like 18mmf2(for better IQ and AF), 27mmf2.8(for better AF, much prefer to have an F2 if possible), 40or45mm, 56or75mm(would like a f2 or f2.8 quality linear motor pancake lens).
I wholeheartedly agree - that new set of 18/23/33 is just too bulky. There is a gap in between 18mm F2 (118g) and F1.4 (370g) in terms of size and weight. Would love to see a successor to that whole line of Fujicrons - with a bit more emphasis on aesthetics this time.
I think if you look at Fujifilm's releases over the past couple of years, you'll see a pattern towards where they're heading. It won't be too long until they replace that first series of small lenses. They've done second versions of their fast lineup and have improved the technology in them, so I'd say it'll only be a matter of a year or two before those get replaced.
what the market lacks is quality 16 to 20 mm n apsc lens. i wish there was a competition in these focal lengths. right now there many in 27 to 35 mm lenses for Fujifilm
I’m looking for a 40 mm for my XT5. Something that has auto focus and at least an F2 aperture. I’ve always wanted to get one of these 40 mm, and not sure why Fuji doesn’t make one. And yes, I own the 23 1.4. = 35mm.

Bit of a massive difference price-wise, for anyone just wanting a casual 35mm for Fuji, the 33mm is not going to come into the picture

Thank you Dylan for such an on-point and very helpful review!! Liked and subscribed :) God bless! 💖🌹🌹
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Love your shots! 👌
Thank you! Glad you enjoy them.

Thanks for watching! It's in progress. I'm trying to get a hold of one of the 35mm f/2 lenses to complete the set at the moment.

Cheers for that Dylan, doesn't sound too shabby but I would miss the aperture ring.

Please do a video for TTArtisan's recent mark II 35mm and compare it to this
TTArtisan did get in touch... waiting on the lens.
I guess the embargo dropped haha, so many videos on this lens... decided to watch yours, and it was great as always!
It would, indeed, seem so. 😂 Appreciate you choosing my video over the multitude of reviews that no doubt surfaced at the same time.
I think this lens is better than the xc 35mm from fuji, and maybe better than the 33mm 1.4 from viltrox.

This lens seems to deliver rendering with a 3D pop, which is uncommon on APSC lenses. What are your thoughts?
I try not to make judgements on perceptual things like that. Typically, that "pop" is really only visible in certain situations on any lens, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. The Fujifilm XF 33mm seems to offer this quite a bit more if that's something you're interested in.

Is that AF?
That lens should be arriving in the next couple of days... look out for a review.

It's not bad at all, as I said in the review. When stopped down, which you'll likely be doing for architecture, it disappears anyway!
What i really want to knoe is how it compares to the XC 35mm f2. Its the same price and that lens is optically unreal.

@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer really looking forward to it then!
Everytime you say series the video pauses and Siri pops up on my iPad.
It seems we still have a while until the robots take over. 😂

It's good to have choices. I guess I'm still waiting on a Touit 32/1.8 dethroner, which this is not. Next!

Viltrox has the 27mm 1.2
As a 40mm lens, I use the voigtlander 27mm f2 on my XT5. Very nice rendering, compact, and good manual focus assist - helps me being more creative 🙂.
If you mean a 27mm lens, Fuji actually has two versions and both pancake lenses.
