    Thanks for this great lesson! It's a little hard for me to get why English people say "I was given..." because it would be more natural to say "something was given to me", but every language has its rules, so we have to get used to not translating from own language but thinking in English.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly. When we don't care about the subject or when it's unknown or unimportant, we can use the passive voice.

    Yes, Andrew! Happy New Year! I wish you well! Question.
    when we use the verb get with an adjective, the structure of the sentence changes a lot. We don't use past participle. I understood it. It used to express the idea that a state is changing or that it's becoming something else. But usually, we say that so naturally that sometimes or some people don't know that we are using the passive voice. Example: I'm finally starting to get good at speaking Japanese! Thank you, Andrew. You are amazing!

    Hi Andrew I just want to comment on the sentences " teddy got injured playing baseball" what I understand is that teddy got injured while she ( teddy) was playing baseball "
    So here we have two sentences and teddy must be the subject of both sentences in order to combine these two sentences , which is grammatically maybe wrong because teddy is the object.
    if I say " somebody injured teddy playing baseball" here the meaning is different which is " somebody injured teddy while he/ she was playing baseball" here " somebody is the same subject, which is maybe correct.
    What do you think?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both sentences and your explanations are correct. In the first one, there is really no subject because it's in the passive voice. So teddy is the object only. Maybe a different person injured him but we don't know or don't care about the information.

    Hi, I want to ask one thing for example "The other day I got lost when ı was out hiking." We know that it is passive sentence right? But how ? I did this action in the past because of that I think It is logical to assume the sentence is in active form. I am really really confused. Sorry if my question is silly.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember that passive voice isn't about the past. It can be used in the past, present, or future. Passive voice is about focusing on the action and the object, but NOT the subject. One of my examples was "My best friend got picked to be the school president." Who picked him though? We don't know because we have dropped the subject and focused on the action (got picked) and the object (my best friend). Hope this makes it clearer.
