I'm about 3 blocks from where Oldsmobiles factory was originally in Lansing, Michigan. It was one of the saddest moments in my life when the place was torn down, every man in my family worked for Olds at one point in time.
Great video on engine building. Keep it simple and be precise.

I bought his book and consulted with him during the parts selection of the build on my Oldsmobile small block. He's not only experienced and very knowledgeable, he is good guy.
Hopefully I will be able to afford his services for my next Oldsmobile project.

i always use moly graphite assembly lube from the parts store in my engines. hell i used it as flat tappet cam lube once. but my engines will usually sit for a few days before being fired up, but the lube will still be there and it's not as thick as white lithium grease old timers used to use.
I like to use the ARP assembly lube on the main studs and rod bolts.
Any options for retrofitting 4-bolt mains on these diesel blocks?
Cos the crank is in the way to put the seal in the engine grove. Watch Part 3 and he explains that the seals are a bit tight as they are.
I like how he thinks, I stopped using stupid assembly lubes on my engines, and have had good luck with quality engine oil on the bearings. Disassembly has also shown better (less) wear on these bearings.
Would billet steel be better than the stock main caps? How much horsepower and rpm are the stock caps capable of?
Great vids very informative,one question though that Moly stuff you use on the threads is it just Molybdenum Disulphide Grease ? thanks
anyone else notice the missing washer on the main cap passenger side front of block the one closest to the camera ? wonder if he did it on purpose ? can't imagine the shop was out of washer's . . .
When he puts the rest of the nuts on the washer is present.

If all mains and rod bearings were designed like the main thrust bearing, then it would be almost impossible to spin a bearing.
