I massively appreciate your content. Too many channels are producing more but lower quality videos. I far prefer fewer, but well researched and edited vids. As someone living in southern England, content like this is a window into another world for me.

I discovered you only in the last week. I find you to be a wonderful, warm pick-me-up when I wake up or at the end the day. Your enthusiasm and interest is genuine, unpretentious, and pretty incredible. I'm in California and have no direct connection to Michigan, but you draw me in. Regardless of how many may see your videos, I think I speak for others in telling you that making even one person feel happier and more informed is reason enough to keep up the good work! It seems that topics I wouldn't think I might find that interesting take me on new paths. Until just yesterday, I never considered snow shoe adventures, but now you have me thinking about a snow trip this winter! Love the wall backdrop, too! Stay outta trouble!

UM geology grad here (‘79)… I enjoy your videos, in particular the Quincy Mine content (my father grew up ten miles away in Osceola). Keeping with your theme of featuring Michigan geology, you may consider taking a trip to Jackson, WY, and doing a video on Camp Davis, UM’s geology field camp, near Hoback Junction, which has been operating since the 1920s (?). I spent the summers of ‘76 and ‘78 studying there, a magical place for those of us who were fortunate to go.

Michigan is amazing . I have lived here my entire life. There are some parts of Michigan where Logging was a HUGE industry .. You should make a trip northward near where I live.. About an hour both ways of me is Lumberman's Monument in Oscoda . Amazing history there and very pretty sights if you stop at all the lookouts and read the sings and stuff. Then if you head north of me about another hour near Grayling is Hartwick Pines national forest and there is trails you can walk and read and see tons of antique machines and stuff they used to cut and move logs to the river. The history is pretty interesting and its quite amazing to see trees that where once cut down for wood that have been protected that are hundreds of years old standing before your eyes that you can walk right up to and touch .. Some of these trees it takes more then one person to wrap your arms around.

I started watching your videos last year after touring the Keweenaw again and finally doing the guided tour at Quincy mine. Don't know where your survey is, but I'd recommend Seney National Wildlife Refuge; I've birded there for almost 50 years and could make a fascinating video. The visito center was under reconstruction this year, don't know when it will be complete. The town of Seney was a lumber town of about 3000 residents and there is a small museum.

Have you considered a video on the Michigan Basin? It may be the biggest geologic structure in the state, but also difficult to grasp because much of it is obscured by glacial till. I suspect many Michigan natives would be surprised to know what lies beneath their feet.

I have spent years coming up north ( family cabin at first ) then vacations to U.P. also have a Sister that lives up there.
Those times we didn't stay in the U.P. we stayed on Mackinac Island or at one of the campgrounds close by ferry's so we could spend at least a day there.

Whatever you choose, I love you and will continue watching whatever you choose to show me.

So glad to have discovered your videos. I love the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn that you bring, as well as how you shoot pre-prepared with background research so you can have an informative discussion. You have a good balance of edited content that is well-paced, but still takes the time to show off the beauty and interests of your topic.
I live in southern Ontario, so we share some of the Geology of Michigan. Should you need to expand your coverage I think you'll discover there's comparable Geologic interests and places of great beauty. One such region is the Thirty Thousand Island area of eastern Georgian Bay. There the landscape is a vast expanse of glacier-polished Canadian Shield, with much evidence of the eroded bases of mountains from hundreds of millions of years ago, that now dot the bay as low islands where families have built their vacation cottages. Rock cuts for highways show the tortured folding of multi-coloured granite, quartz, and basalt layers with many fracture inclusions. Truly an amazing place to visit. Inland there's the region around Bancroft that's been called the Gem and Mineral Centre of Ontario, with many mines and quarry sites to explore. Much for anyone with an interest in Geology and Natural History.

It will be interesting to see your new content with your new format.
I don't know if you've been to the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area yet in your travels across da U.P., but there are a few interesting things to see here, such as the Cornish Pump museum, and the Iron Mountain ski jump. The Cornish Pump was one of the largest steam powered water pumps in North America, used to pump water out of the iron mine that it sits next to. It's a fascinating piece of technology for the time in which it was built. The museum seems to only be open in the summer now, but it's worth a visit.
The site also houses the WW2 glider museum. A lot of the gliders were built locally at the old Ford plant in Kingsford where they built the "woodies" before WW2.

I love your energy and enthusiasm! You're a great communicator too. I just found you and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. I like your new approach (and your old approach), so good luck with your channel. Happy holidays to you and yours and see you next year! 🙂

Happy 2023! I'm from the Netherlands and the algorithm dropped into your orbit. US, Glacial lakes and granite must be the way YT keywords, based on my Nick Zentner on YT consumption. I binged everything I didn't even know I would like to learn about Washington State geology. I'm quite happy to learn from you about the UP of Michigan. As the Netherlands is in a delta we don't really have rocks (clay, sand and silt all the way down here) keep mentioning rocks and I will be back watching. If you ever have questions on delta's, levies and dykes you can ask me :)

Alexis...you might look into the old lumber rail road that was covered by the dunes in SW mich..as kids we found the tracks exiting on the water side of the dunes....also how about a story on the DC 7 ? that went down outside of South haven during a thunder storm....I grew up in South Haven / Bridgman area and know the area well...thanks, keep up the excellent work !

I am so glad I stumbled across your channel! I've only spent about 24 hours of my life on the UP, but somehow that just doesn't matter.
Regarding your video format change, I have really enjoyed your expert videos. I have many older scholars in my family - there is so much knowledge in professors emeritus (literal and figurative) and all they need is a sympathetic ear to pour their decades of research into. So, well done in recognizing such a vast and untapped resource. I look forward to seeing what else you discover!

Oh, you can do good research for sure. As someone who studies History and Geography, I think you are doing a great job explaining the topics you have posted. Regional History and Geography is one of my favs to watch and learn. I often considered doing my own vids in Sudbury, a region that is rich in history and geography. I am happy to be a subscriber and look forward to watching more of your vids. Thank you for making them.

Love your channel and I have an idea for you if you're interested. The great fire in the thumb of Michigan in 1871 was possibly from A fringe theory links together several major fires that occurred simultaneously in America, including the Great Chicago Fire, the Great Michigan Fire, and the Peshtigo Fire, claiming that they were caused by fragments of Biela's Comet striking the Earth, in October 1871 . Just a thought :)

Just saw this at the very end of the year, and need to go through many more of your videos to really answer your survey. Something to do while watching bowl games this 2022. So far, what I'm seeing about Michigan is fascinating- and it certainly making me wonder more about things in this state.

I just found your channel thanks to your videos with experts (the one about the meteor impact) so absolutely keep doing that! It's great.
I'll just turn on the always notify option so the longer gaps between videos don't mean TH-cam forgets your channel.

Hi Alexis. TH-cam just pointed me to your videos a couple of days ago and I'm enjoying them tremendously. I'm from West Michigan but am currently living in NE Wisconsin. I've visited many of the places in your videos and it's really fun seeing a deep dive into their history and geology. Have a happy new year and I look forward to more videos.

I’m from Ohio so I’m not sure how you feel about me making a comment. 😊 I love Sci show and I’m always looking for new science and history content. It seems to me that using an expert on location is a more traditional way of creating a story. Thinking every thing from Mr Rogers visiting the pencil factor, to Nova exploration of the giant crystal caverns in Mexico. With that said it is wildly effective, and I haven’t seen it as a format on TH-cam. Take this space and run with it.

Just filled out the survey. a little late but just found your channel today. I put Blacksmithing in there but there are quire a few smiths in the western UP you might be interested in. Copper Island Forge should be close to you. He is doing classes at Calumet art center and he knows his stuff. Also your videos kinda give off a Tom Scott kinda vibe. How do you feel about his format?

I just started watching your channel. As a native Michigander, I love your content. My only regret is that I didn't have your videos when I visited these places years ago. I have one suggestion. Forgive me if it's already been covered. I haven't worked through all of your videos yet. Have you considered doing something on North Manitou Island? It's a fascinating place that I would love to hear about from your perspective.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. And I haven't done anything on the island yet! I have had a couple of folks recommend that to me recently, though, so I've added it to my ongoing list of ideas to look into. 🙂

@@AlexisDahl An interesting angle would be how the diesel motor saved this island from complete deforestation as a parallel to todays electric motor. Probably not your gig but it would be cool.

If not, could you make one? Another topic of interest to me is the world record piece of float copper that was found in Ontonangon and is now on display in the Smithsonian
