    Agree with you. I’ve been shouting it from the rooftop to All willing to listen. Jazz makes up less than 3 percent of the base music consumer. To only make a low amount of copies available does NO one any good. All wanting a copy should have access in the format they desire. RSD copies, MM copies, bring out the flippers and ruin the art!!! For us long term guys, it’s an Art and not a hobby.

    The Japaneses, for the first time, edited, for it's 75th birthday anniversary, a long list of Blue Note albums with some unreleased tunes on many of those titles, "Blue Trane" session included. So I'm quite sure that they will edit, for the first time in a double LP set, the 8 tunes recorded that day. Let's see if I'm right about it.

    I wish the Tone Poet’s did away with the gatefold jackets. Feels like an unnecessary expense. You’re not replicating the original release, you just get a few extra photos inside and it takes up more space in the shelf. They can stick with the heavy duty tip on jackets without the gatefold and bring the cost down a bit.

    As these terms get thrown about quite a bit with many not really knowing the actual meaning or importance from a demographics perspective. The Silent Generation (1925-1944}, 52.5 million were the core audience for the jazz movement. Then came the Baby Boomers (1945-1964) 78.2 billion which brought rock n roll & the birth of high end audio. With the birth of high end brought the interest in the boomers expanding their interest into wider range of music, especially Jazz. Now Mike's generation, Gen X (1965-1984) 69.5 million which was really the start of the digital revolution. Vinyl was dying along with many high end audio shops especially when you consider there were nearly 10 million less Gen Xer's then Boomer's. Now this is where it gets really interesting, Gen Y, The Millennials (1985-2004) 79.5 million, 1.3 million more then Boomers. The Silent Gen is dying off, the Boomers are retrieving and the Millinnials are the real economy drivers now, it's all in the numbers. The rebirth of the headphone industry is because of the Millinnials & they are better then they ever were in the 70's & 80's, which eventually inspired there interest in high end 2 channel. And the grand finale, the rebirth of vinyl. So my message to the selfish hoarders that are mearly interested in keeping prices at unobtainable levels for so many new guys wanting to enjoy many of our great American treasures, shame on you. I hope they keep pressing away, it has never been better. I only wish that these great artist were with us today to enjoy the respect they so richly deserved. All I can say is thank you to the Millinnials as this is truly the Golden age of vinyl!

    Mike, I think you have done a great job in trying to illuminate an increasingly, at least to me, complex field of different labels, mastering techniques, mastering engineers, analog vs. digital sources, etc. 45 years ago, I decided that LPs sounded better than CDs when played on a competent turntable. In the 80's, 90's and first decade of 2000 I went to garage sales every weekend and amassed around 3,700 titles (south of Tampa Bay, FL). Now I search EBay, Discogs, Record Stores to try and fill in the gaps of artists I love. (My primary love, 60's and 70's rock, and classic, traditional be-bop jazz.) But lately, I have gotten audiophile pressings that have slight warps (I think from people who bought them to resell and did not store properly or simply were not "pressed" with the attention to detail that was present years ago). I am disillusioned and about to call it quits. Too many choices, too many variables, too expensive and quality control problems. I'm throwing in the towel.

    • @lucalone
      @lucalone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      many flippers buy audiophile pressings and never open them because they want to resell them with profit.
      I would never buy (or very rarely) an unopened vinyl record from a private seller because they quality control nowadays is often not existing...

    • @edwardgonczy3170
      @edwardgonczy3170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lucalone Your advice is well taken and thankfully, it was not a terribly expensive one. The LP was "Pinkerton" by Weezer and other than that very slight "warp" which my turntable easily tracks, the LP is absolutely perfect and had never even been opened from it's direct purchase from Mobile Fidelity! But going forward, I will use more caution if I go forward at all LOL.

    Mike… it will be the Mono version of Blue train, you can see so on the label they were pasting on the vinyl (it said BLP) and Joe Harley said it would not be an SRX-type of vinyl.. they don’t have plans going in that direction as for now.. that’s what he said in the interview. It looks like it’s just going to be a regular tone poet mono version. They seem not to have any plans in making SRX type vinyls as of yet. Maybe they just want to make it accessible/cheap as they all have been, I suppose.

  • @kguy2know

    So, when a title was orig done in mono I actually prefer it in MONO. A lot of times when a title in the 60s was recorded in MONO and also in a multi track stereo i will purchase both (The Nat King Cole Story is an example). If they specially alter the mono to make it stereo I do not care for those. Personally, I would love Tone Poets in MONO. I also am drawn to the Tone Poets as they are very high quality and cheap- I like quality at a reasonable price. Music matters never interested me. I look forward to this Blue Train pressing. I would rather have a Stouton gatefold jacket than a box set- I wish the Eric Clapton MOFI would have come with a nice gatefold jacket instead of that clunky box. In the future they should give you a choice of same quality vinyl but we can opt out of that box and get a Stouton Gatefold instead. IMO. I am with you : make it accessible to everyone. I grew up in the 70s and started buying records late 70s, I was 10 - it was accessible to everyone.

  • @mazzysmusic

    I agree that Craft small batch should get out to retailers but then shouldn’t Analog Productions and MoFi get you and other retailers their One Steps and UHQRs at the same time they ship them? That is one reason I’ve never ordered them from a third party like you. Too bad I’d rather support the indies ✌🏻

    Hi Mike, thanks for your super cool videos BTW. In my opinion it might be much simpler about BN Coltrane future release : they just prepare a large batch of records to be released worldwide at the same time (or approx same time). This is a famous album and they probably have learnt from Chet Baker sings, when it was sold out very quickly. Don Was's Instagram video seems to show a regular BN TP record, nothing more, nothing less... Julien (paris, France)

    Definitely wouldn’t mind these mono releases, but mono is not for me personally. Yes, some mono recordings are very good, but I always choose stereo over mono, if available. Mono simply doesn’t have that sound stage most good stereo recordings do. I already have MM mono Blue Train and would love a AAA stereo version myself. Regardless, many good developments in the world of vinyl currently.

    BLUE NOTE CLASSIC SERIES: I kinda get the point of not making premium gatefold sleeves, since MM did it. But why go with the lower end of the spectrum, with flimsy stuff? Isn’t there a middle ground? Non gatefold, but nice enough cardboard/print? The CLASSIC SERIES quality of vinyl and quality of jacket are incoherent, a mismatch. Charge 1 or 2 $ more and print jackets that pay tribute to the BLUE NOTE artwork and brand. Simples.

    • @drazenbabich
      @drazenbabich 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don Was said in one of the interviews when asked the very same question that the direction of the Classic series is to have top of the line medium (analogue sourced vinyl) packaged in the affordable packaging (thin matte cardboard sleeve) to appease the general population of BN jazz buyers and collectors, this is unlikely to change anytime soon, if ever. The issue he had with it was that if they went with higher grade, glossy slip pockets for the Classics they would come too close to 30% more expensive non-gate fold Tone Poets, and there are admittedly quite of few of them. He thus wanted to retain the clearer line of separation. But you never know… just look at the move they made from BN75 to BN80 series after the collectors demanded more authentic (analogue instead of DSD hi res digital) sources of those pressings. That was a great move by the BN and it took them a long time to do so. So yeah… I am still hopeful for better quality of the Classics packaging but unless TP lifts its game (how and what exactly?) and moves into higher price bracket, not much will change IMO.

Some of the Bluenote tittles on Music Matters have not been re released in decades, so they are over do and some of us are clamoring over some of the titles that Music Matters had, that are no longer available.
    I agree with mono pressings in special jackets. I will buy two copies of the John Coltrane. I have a mono New York label of it in decent condition. Agree 💯 % with Blue Note doing their own One Steps.

    Agree with your thoughts. I have often wondered why BN does not do Tone Poet 45s the way Music Matters and Analogue Productions have done in the past. Perhaps BN is waiting for the MM contract to expire before they jump in and do a few BN 45s. Quite a few to choose from. Blue Train, Moanin', A Caddy for Daddy, etc. Could also see them doing both 33s and 45s.

    The Tone Poets and the Classic Series are both phenomenal and terrific gateway drugs for launching a high quality jazz habit! Blue Train will be huge. No idea what the special treatment might be, except that perhaps they're pressing 40,000 of them when they might otherwise do 15,000. Obviously there's numbers are hypothetical but, just saying, it might just be a huge uptick in the amount that they produce.
    PS-I actually like the single sleeve of the Classic series, and I don't need every album in my collection to be the equivalent of two and a half albums worth of space, for one LP, and like 34 minutes of music.
    Mono only appeals to me for albums made in the mono era, but if that's authentic, then that's what I want.

    Look at My Favorite Things - Mono and Stereo and they found non damaged tapes after ERC release
    Now Coltrane Atlantic mono box is complete!
    Sounds great - only $30

    Hi Mike, I saw a few stalls in Den Bosch that were selling MOFIs (outside your stall). I remember a number of Dylans and others...but as you say no Analogue Productions titles and no Speakers Corners either. Which is strange because this is German.
    Also here in Belgium in the local shops you will find Tone Poets, Blue Notes and in 1 shop even some MOFI's or Analogue Productions titles (new, not second-hand), but again no Speakers Corners.
    About the Blue Train, I'm guessing the mono edition with some extras (outtakes or other versions?) Because they will do something special

    Yes, more mono would be nice - Tone Poet or otherwise affordable.

    I've got the 2008 AAA Blue Note reissue (which also came with a CD) and it sounds great, but I would definitely buy a Tone Poet, especially if it was mono.

    Hi Mike,
    If it is a special edition then perhaps KG is Mastering this using the stereo cut at 33 which was never done by MM. Or release both versions as a box set

    Yep - I'm new to jazz and getting good editions of this stuff is hard and expensive. The demand is there and they should DEFINITELY duplicate things they have done in the past.

    I have heard from a reliable source they will do a mono cut with a rearranged track order. It won't start off with the iconic title track.

    I have the MM33s and I have no problem if the TP series repeated the titles. What BN needs to do is stop pressing the Classic series at Optimal, too many problems with non-fill and noisy vinyl. I've returned so many copies trying to get good ones - it's ridiculous. I have A/Bed Idle Moments and the Classic sounds like crap compared to the MM. I hope there is a day when all of the BN catalog is always in print!
