Além da pesca, a extração de sal e a apanha de moluscos e bivalves são as atividades tradicionais das populações da Ria que, com sabedoria e arte, criaram deliciosas especialidades gastronómicas, como a sopa de peixe ou o arroz de lingueirão, que poderá saborear tranquilamente nos restaurantes à beira-mar.
Quem gosta de sol e mar, encontra nas ilhas da Ria Formosa verdadeiros paraísos. De oeste para leste, sucedem-se as Ilhas de Faro, da Barreta, da Culatra, da Armona e de Tavira, com extensos areais pouco frequentados.
