A Brief History of Acadians in Nova Scotia (and their food) as told by Simon Thibault

  • Without a country, what defines a people? Simon Thibault takes us to his Acadia, where family and homely food give a sense of place.
Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean
Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest.
    - Evangeline, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The first film from our adventures in Nova Scotia takes a whimsical path to Acadia through the eyes of cookbook author Simon Thibault who celebrates the perseverance of food culture despite a history of hardship and "being dispersed, but still fervently of where you are."

Found that my husband's roots go back to Acadia. They were refugees in Massachusetts after the Great Upheaval and then resettled in Quebec. Surname: LeBlanc

All LeBlancs and North America can trace their ancestors back to one couple in the 1600's.

Was it Daniel LeBlanc? 1671 census has him at Port Royal: farmer age 45, his wife Francoise age 48, seven children: Francoise 18 married, Jacques 20, Estienne 15, Rene 14, Andre 12, Antoine 9, Pierre 7, 18 cattle, 26 sheep, and 10 arpents of land.

I'm Cajun. My mother's side from is from St. Landry, New Orleans, and Calcasieu. Wow, same culture but the food is a little different. Agree.on being the first to say "I'm Cajun". I remember not wanting to say that.,

Nicely done. My great grandmother and those that came before were Acadian. I am Acadian, but only now learning what that means.

Yes, definitely worth it! If you go, take the time to visit the other Acadian communities in Nova Scotia and in Prince Edward Island.

Hello cousin! My Mémère was Thibault, and the youngest of 16 children. They relocated to Sanford, ME, and then to RI with my Pépère.

    Great video.
It should be noted Acadians had taken the oath but with a negotiated caveat of neutrality. In 1755 it changed. The British colonial administration wanted an unqualified oath, and it was this form of oath the Acadians refused.
