Touring Little Leaf Farms' High-Tech Greenhouse

Paul Sellew, Founder & CEO of Little Leaf Farms, tells us how his company has built a high-tech greenhouse to bring the freshest and best-tasting baby lettuce to the East Coast. Their ten-acre facility in Massachusetts is the largest in the Northeastern region of the United States.

the most important fact, in my opinion, is that the lettuce taste totally amazing! It is crunchy, crispy and curly and it's well worth the trip to the grocery store. I think it stays fresh longer in the fridge than most lettuce brands too...Once you try this lettuce, you'll never want to eat another brand of greens again....

It's a shame. Little Leaf Farms lettuce is great, but their plastic packaging is not. While they claim it's 100 percent post consumer plastic and infinately recyclable, they don't tell you that less than 10 percent of plastics in the USA are actually recycled. The rest ends up in our landfills, oceans, soil, drinking water, food and our bodies as micro-plastics. Also, the glued on labels like the ones used on their packaging makes it extremely difficult and expensive for recyclers to remove and process. I now buy unpackage lettuce in the supermarket, and grow my own hydroponic lettuce at home. I wrote to Little Leaf asking them to consider providing non-packaged lettuce in our supermarkets, but all they did was promote the advantages of their plastic packaging. Little leaf does a great job of growing lettuce in an environmentally friendly way.. but a terrible job when it comes to keeping our world safe from micro-plastic pollution.
