I feel the same way, I've also recently purchased Clip Studio paint as well as Spriter. I think being able to do both sides will help me prototype things much easier, as well as save myself a little money during that stage.
The Bible and evolution theorists where wrong all along!!! Humans were already made in a ancient 3D programm and 3D Printed. We all have the same Basemesh but we are all a bit randomized! Dont listen to those liars D:
I just want to say, even though I've watched this video dozens of times over the last 3 years, I still come back to it for a refresher all the time. Even after multiple updates to Blender, and new channels popping up over the years, this is STILL the best character modelling video on TH-cam. Sebastian, you should be very proud of what you accomplished here, because it is a masterclass in learning how to model a CORRECT character. So many other tutorials are either just a speedlapse that doesn't really teach anything, or badly done tutorials that actually teach the WRONG ways to do things. But this is excellent. Anyone reading this if you are new to Blender, or 3D modelling in general, this is the one you want to follow.
2.8 people - add the reference images as an empty SHIFT+A -> Empty -> Image Open the image via the Object data tab (above the Texture tab) Then rotate the images as needed to be able to view from the front and the side. And change transparency under the Object data tab. *Note:* The images are visible in both Perspective and Orthographic modes in 2.8.
If anyone else is reading this, go to the view you want the image for and search for command "load background image". It makes the process much easier.
@DunklerJägerZach just adding that you need to be in the right view and then add background image. So go first Num 1, then add front image as background, then go Num 3 and add side image as background.
For anyone wondering how to delete the double vertexes when attaching the arms in Blender 2.8 Snap the arm into place, then select everything, go into vertex select mode and right click, at the bottom you'll find Merge Vertices -> By Distance. That's it :)
For anybody working in Blender 2.9 and looking for the subdivide smooth option at 21:04. After going into edit mode, press ctrl+E to open the edge tools method then click subdivide and in the menu that pops up increase smoothness to 1.

Thank you! You just saved me a bunch of time! Was almost ready to go down the documentation rabbithole to find this specific thing. Your comment should be higher :/
What do you think of some artist using a single plane to do this? I am trying that method because he shows how to do the mouth, teeth and tounge. But I am liking this guy's video here for background characters, but I'm always interested in speeding up my work if quality doesn't suffer.
Noobie here, using blender 2.82. I couldn't open the Specials menu using W as referenced in 9:46. I found the Shade Smooth option by going in object mode and right-clicking to open the menu. Hope this helps. :)
2.8+ Updates -Adding in the reference images in 2.8 can be done by having nothing selected, and being in Object Mode and Pressing Shift+A, going to "Image" and then pressing "reference" and selecting the photo wherever it may be on your computer. Afterwards you might need to change its position, rotation and scaling of both of the photos to be aligned and match the video (I set the scaling to 3.5 for both photos). -For the snapping tool, it will be located at the top, next to a magnet, there you can select Vertex and use the snapping feature. -The "Remove Doubles" option has been replaced in 2.8 with "Merge Vertices," and when you hover over merge vertices, click on the "by Distance" option. -Since "Subdivide Smooth" has been removed in 2.8x, the workaround would be to just "Subdivide" and then changing the smoothness to 1 on the lower left menu to get it that "smooth" shape. Edit: adding in some more tips
For those of you following in newer versions of Blender, the new UI removed the background image feature. Instead, use Add < Empty < Image. Using the empty menu on the default right hand panel (Properties Panel < Empties tab) you can control options of it such as transparency and if it should only be visible in orthagraphic view (preferrable).
Best Tutorial ever for Blender. Tryed a lot and give up 5 Times working with Blender. But your Tutorial just bring me back to the game. You should make more videos like this. Tempo is perfect, explanation is perfect and that you show the Shortcuts helps a lot!
Hello! This is the first episode in a series on creating the character graphics for the Unity RPG series. You're welcome, of course, to watch these videos independently of the RPG series, if you're just interested in learning more about Blender. This series does assume some basic familiarity with the software. You can find a list of the keyboard shortcuts used in this video over here: github.com/SebLague/Blender-Shortcuts/blob/master/README.md (let me know if I'm missing anything). The main portion of this playlist will cover: Character modelling (you are here) Rigging Idle, walk, and run animations Modelling clothing and hair Modelling armour and weapons Weapon attack animations There will also be videos on creating a treasure chest (as one of the interactables for the game), and a skeleton (who is the enemy in the game).
How much different is this version going to be compared to your video a few years ago? I'm currently watching the Lynda.com course Blender Essential Training and am on chapter 4 (specifically, joining meshes!) I just started my first "creature" model. I know you didn't hit the removable armor in the other tutorial, but is much of the work process the same? Thanks for the tutorials they're awesome at least TH-cam gets some good use from part of it's uploaders :D
Late to the party but thank you very much for this tut. No shitty techno soundtrack, amazingly easy to follow commentary, this is what all tuts should be like.
How have i just accidentally stumbled on the best tutorial for anything that ive ever seen. Ive used maya a bit before but this makes blender seem so much less scary than some people make it out to be
Thank you so much... I've used Blender twice before, but only made a mug and a chain. Now I am much more confident! I even decided to go for making articulated fingers, didn't even need to follow a guide because of this video.
for recently version, way to set background. shift+a in object mode. image -> background. In scene collection, new empty Object would created. click it, and click orange icon tab named object properties at properties editor on bottom right. at transform, set rotate 90 0 0 for front, 90 0 90 for side. check display front at the viewport display menu. click red icon tab named object data properties uncheck perspective at show in option. check opacity and set value 0.3 or whatever you want. open image to set background.
helpful > I used image -> Reference in 3.0.1 and your other instructions, seems to work, the toggle/uncheck perspective step is more clear when we switch between orthographic and perspective modes in the next few steps. Thanks for sharing.
World's most helpful tutorial ever. No, seriously. I wouldn't have started modelling without this video, thank you. I usually won't comment on videos, but it's necessary for this one because I want to say... THANK YOU!
This video is such an incredible beginning point. It will help anyone wanting to learn how to start creating humanoid characters Blender. *Simply and Utterly SUPERB video tutorial............... THANK YOU.*
i Know im late to the party and many options are in diffrent places in the new version of blender .. but believe me im so glad i found your video even though i wont me making animations but sculpting miniatures for table top games. Thanks a lot and stay healthy
I've tried following TONS of 3d modeling tutorials and always ended up getting lost. I LOVE your style of tutorials, and how you continue to show the shortcuts you're using through the entire process. Most people do stuff like "press this button, or use this menu, to enter vertex mode" the first or second time they do it, then never tell you how again, so I'm constantly rewinding to look it up and usually messing up in the process. Your tutorials are so easy to follow, and it's easy to follow them while modelling something other than a human, which is awesome! Instant like/fave/sub from me.
Yes! Subdivision, bridge edge loops, and remove duplicates.... You just opened the world up to me. I was struggling with this sort of thing so much. Thank you!
Holding down shift while using alt s and any other feels amazing compared to the normal clunky control. A small thing that makes modeling twice as fun and great, the smoothness makes me feel a lot more in control and less prone to messing it up randomly because of a random button
Just so I would understand this tutorial better, I just went through a 12-hour tutorial with Blender Guru to make a doughnut, mug and plate. Suddenly this tutorial doesn't feel so alien. Keep on keeping on....
This is what is SO frustrating about artist. They make it look so easy! But when I get my programmer hands on Blender, it's a disaster. Thanks for the collaboration you guys. This gives those of us not in the games industry a good idea about how artists and programmers work together to create a game.
OMG This is *exactly* what I've been looking for. A clearly explained and very simple body mesh. Thank you so much. Excellent tutorial. Now my attempts at a human figure don't look like a deformed mutant from the Cursed Earth.
I've been a long time 3ds max guy but you and Bracky have touched my fancy and I just downloaded blender and we'll see how far down the rabbit hole this goes.
Since Blender has gone under a massive update since this video was posted, it took me over FIVE HOURS TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH THIS TUTORIAL. Well, that and the face that this is literally the first time I've ever used the program, so I really suck at it right now.
About dame time. I have been thru Tutorial to territorial. None of them were as clear nor as consise as you. You have helped me more in this vid then 3 years of youtube. Thank you.

I can't believe I haven't seen this until now, this is one of the best damn free tutorials on creating a lowpoly basemesh in blender that I've seen, great job!
A marvellously clear and well explained tutorial, thank you! I have a question: in most of the other tutorials I have seen the artists create the feet, head, hands, etc. by extruding from the existing geometry, so the whole thing is created by extrusion from the original object, whereas you make your hands, feet, etc. and then merge them into the model. Is there a technical reason that you use this method? Or is it a matter of personal preference?
I just did this tutorial, but decided to make hands with fingers just from the arm stump itself, same with the feet but no toes. This was extremely helpful. Finally, no need to wait for an artist to partner up with. Thanks mate! :)
hi Sebastian lague, thanks for the awesome tuts.. i have a question, will you do the video tutorials for the ground, trees, rocks etc in your future episode?, until then cheers:)
Currently only intend to cover the player (+equipment), the skeleton enemy and an interactable item (probably a treasure chest). However, may include some environment episodes at the end if it's a popular request.
So I've been subscribed to you because of the Coding Adventure series and today was looking on TH-cam for blender tutorials. After watching maybe 10 tutorials that didn't help me at all, I found this video and it's fucking great. Maybe it's just your perfect voice, but everything immediately made sense. Only after having watched the whole video did I notice that I already were subscribed to you and saw that you were the same guy I stumbled upon a few weeks ago. Thank you very much for these videos!
Okay I can't get past the section at 2:17 Everytime I try to make the mirror modifier, the square splits apart when I move it. It isn't connected. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? EDIT : I figured it out, I hadn't cut the square cleanly in half along the middle.
geez Blender ui is insanely complicated! I used to work in 3DS Max, but this is just crazy! I finally managed to get front\side pics visible, but I cant see primitive cube anywhere, it is in object tree but not in viewport! what to do?
Does the cube have the open eye icon next to it in the object tree, meaning that it is visible? If not, toggle that on. You can also try pressing shift+C which will zoom the viewport to put all objects in view.
Well, blender UI is horrible to quick start, it takes time to get it handy. But after several weeks of using it I find it best interface among others. Everything is done by keyboard shortcuts, no stupid buttons, fast and easy work with model.
THANKS! I ALWAYS WANTED TO CREATE AN RPG BUT I'M NOT SO GOOD AT GRAPHIC DESIGNING , I'M JUST A GOOD PROGRAMMER. I SEARCHED ALL THE TH-cam, I FOUND A VID BY DARREN LILE BUT THOSE WERE TOO LONG. THANKS AGAIN! WAIT! WHY'S THIS CAPITAL , JUST I GOT CAPSL ON 😅
This is AMAZING. Thankyou thankyou. thankyou. the instructions are crystal clear, the pace is great and the reference material meant we could follow exactly. Ive tried a few tutorials and this is the first one that made me feel like i get blender. Looking forward to following you on patreon.
I know all the shortcuts are a bit overwhelming, but they're super helpful to know. I've compiled a list that covers (I think) all of the ones used in this video + some extras. I hope that helps somewhat! github.com/SebLague/Blender-Shortcuts/blob/master/README.md
@Sebastian Lague: hey sebastian. really nice tutorial! Got just one remark/question: Could you maybe set your Screencast Mod (or whatever it is you're using) so that that there is a slight delay before the the buttons disappear on the screen? Because if you're pressing them in quick succession, it's hard to figure out which button it is you pressed before. As for instance in [sx0enter] etc. Think you did this in your other tutorials before. Would be bit easier to follow the list of command-inputs then. Looking forward to your coming tutorials!
They become muscle memory the more you work with them! I just started simple and branched off. There are really helpful beginner tutorials which get you used to the UI. I am still learning basic things.
thanks so much - this was a really helpful - i was wanting to learn character box modelling and you do it really well. great pacing, lots of explanations, and straight to the point.
Gerry A first class video. Providing a list of the shortcuts used and the two reference images. For some reason the images would not open on my laptop but I was able to copy and save them. The image of the the final mesh model is also very helpful. While I only watched the tutorial, I have learned a lot from it and I am looking forward to following it through. Tks! Keep up the good work.
Great tutorial!! I followed along and made my own little 3D man. The tutorial was the right length - it's easy for these tutorials to get very lost on details (graphically nit picking the fine details of the model to the point of losing the audience). For the most part used a limited number of the tools, but used them multiple times to reinforce how they work. I really enjoyed this!
So I completed a couple Lynda courses and then came back to this and it went way better this time around. Definitely a bit quick for a super beginner but if you've had any experiece in blender should be able to keep up for the most part. It probably took me twice as long to get it all done due to stoping and pausing and adjusting but I'm pretty satisfied with it for now and will continue to upgrade and tweak it more as I go.
I'm not the person to subscribe or like on youtube, but I have subscribed to your channel. Your videos are amazing. Perfect presentation, just the right amount of explanation, and very interesting topics. This is really awesome, Thank you.
Yes! I've always wanted to do stuff like this though I put it off because its always seemed so difficult to start. But now I have this semi-human looking dude and I am so ready to fully take this on!
Excellent how to; the whole series is very well explained. My hot keys and pathways to actions are very different but still excellent learning tool for anyone willing to try something.
Yes! I don't know about you guys but I'm gonna be following this myself... No more programmer art! ;)
interesting

2.8+ Updates
-Adding in the reference images in 2.8 can be done by having nothing selected, and being in Object Mode and Pressing Shift+A, going to "Image" and then pressing "reference" and selecting the photo wherever it may be on your computer.

7:42 "We won't be seeing the character's bum too oftenly" how dare you
I'm crying. This is beyond amazing, thank you for this video 💙
Nice video. I''m looking forward for the animation/rigging i have always really failed in this field.
Took me 3 hours to follow from start to finish but this tutorial helped me a ton. Thank you.
[sebastian finishes feet]
me: all right, all done
[sebastian creates a cube for the head]
me: oh, right. i forgot.
me too! You really don’t want to forget the head XD
This tutorial is the only Blender tutorial that managed to finally move me to start modeling
Me disabling clipping than enabling it for the hand cubes to be separate "the fbi is looking for me"
This is just a good demonstration of showing how the tools work.
"Admire our HANDiwork. It's a little bit ugly, adMITTEDly."
I see what you did there.
Excellent explanation of each and every step at the right pace. Many thanks !
Yo the character T H I C C
Absolutely LOVE the way he did his arms.
hi Sebastian lague, thanks for the awesome tuts.. i have a question, will you do the video tutorials for the ground, trees, rocks etc in your future episode?,
until then cheers:)
Currently only intend to cover the player (+equipment), the skeleton enemy and an interactable item (probably a treasure chest). However, may include some environment episodes at the end if it's a popular request.
Well I vote yes because this is a great tutorial and I'll be following
Sebastian Lague I'm late, but I vote yes as well lol. For the environment tutorial.
Wow Sebastian Laque I've been checking tutorial videos on TH-cam about animations. you are the best of the best! I give you a crown man
2:25 already stuck... thanks 2.8
Okay I can't get past the section at 2:17
Everytime I try to make the mirror modifier, the square splits apart when I move it. It isn't connected. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
EDIT : I figured it out, I hadn't cut the square cleanly in half along the middle.
Turn on "clipping."
Awesome video. Using this as the basis of low poly characters for the game i'm working on. Thanks to you and Brackeys for your awesome tutorials.
geez Blender ui is insanely complicated!
You can also try pressing shift+C which will zoom the viewport to put all objects in view.
aaah for those having same problem, go to bottom left menu View and choose Show all layers!
Sebastian Lague yeah eye was on! shift c will come in handy for sure! thanks for quick help, keep up this great series :)
Well, blender UI is horrible to quick start, it takes time to get it handy. But after several weeks of using it I find it best interface among others. Everything is done by keyboard shortcuts, no stupid buttons, fast and easy work with model.
Lmao im in the same boat as you buddy
That thing you did at the beginning with the pictures on the front and right is very helpful
THANKS!
I ALWAYS WANTED TO CREATE AN RPG BUT I'M NOT SO GOOD AT GRAPHIC DESIGNING ,
I'M JUST A GOOD PROGRAMMER.
All those shortcuts... UGH!
That shortcuts are not that difficult to remember, as you think. Try watch some blender courses on youtube, they will explane each one of them.
Thanks for the cheatsheet :)
They become muscle memory the more you work with them! I just started simple and branched off. There are really helpful beginner tutorials which get you used to the UI. I am still learning basic things.
Decend at coding, the worst at modeling, this realy helps.
deutsch?
I'M GAY
Makes sense
thanks so much - this was a really helpful - i was wanting to learn character box modelling and you do it really well. great pacing, lots of explanations, and straight to the point.
This is so much easier after completing your cowboy tutorial. I can't believe it took me so long to model the Cowboy.
Interesting. It's a lot more like shaping clay than composing shapes. Great tutorial!
This is the best Blender tutorial I have ever seen!
You literally made it so easy to understand. Great and simple video!
you made in 30 min what I had been working for 2 weekes
So I completed a couple Lynda courses and then came back to this and it went way better this time around. Definitely a bit quick for a super beginner but if you've had any experiece in blender should be able to keep up for the most part. It probably took me twice as long to get it all done due to stoping and pausing and adjusting but I'm pretty satisfied with it for now and will continue to upgrade and tweak it more as I go.
Best Blender Tutorial ever
Thank you so much for this series guys!
Really appreciate the work you've put in to it.
This is so fun. Ive been avoiding 3d modelling for nothing.
WOW just as I am attempting to make an adventure game you legends come out with this. :D Really appreciate you and brackeys.
It's the best character creation tutorial I have watched
I'm not the person to subscribe or like on youtube, but I have subscribed to your channel. Your videos are amazing. Perfect presentation, just the right amount of explanation, and very interesting topics. This is really awesome, Thank you.
Yes! I've always wanted to do stuff like this though I put it off because its always seemed so difficult to start. But now I have this semi-human looking dude and I am so ready to fully take this on!
Excellent how to; the whole series is very well explained. My hot keys and pathways to actions are very different but still excellent learning tool for anyone willing to try something.
