Something I like to do is buy bulk onions, bell peppers, carrots and celery. I clean them, chop them up, flash freeze in a single layer on a sheet pan. Then I put them into freezer bags. When I'm ready to use them I simply scoop out the amount I plan to use and place the bag back into the freezer. Many times I don't feel like chopping veggies up so this has made preparing a meal so much easier. Also, I only have the mess to clean up once and never have produce go bad. I also like to cook a large amount of rice in my instant pot. After it cools I divide it up into freezer bags and freeze it. Then when I need rice, I pull out a bag, warm in microwave or add to a dish I'm cooking and it taste the same as if I cooked it fresh. I also like to buy bulk potatoes when I find a bargain. Clean them, slice with a mandolin, dehydrate them. Store them in large canning jars, vacuum seal the lids. You can also grind them into flakes in a food processor or blender. Then when I want to make a potato dish, I take out the amount I need, reconstitute with milk, water or broth and they are delicious. You have your own instant potatoes. I never have to throw away ruined potatoes. These tips help me have a meal on the table quickly with less work and clean up.

Yes, I batch cook. Mine are heart healthy for me. Husband eats differently.
I tend to batch cook main item and freeze 5 or 6 portions for later, leaving a couple out in the fridge. I make several different items than have a variety for a couple weeks. This saves me so much time.
Yesterday, I baked gingerbread muffins and cornbread muffins at the same time to save energy. I laughed that the temperatures were 400 degrees for one and 375 degrees for the other. I compromised and put my oven on 385 degrees and called it good.
I appreciate the frugal channels. The communities are helpful and the viewers comments give so many helpful hints. We will all not only survive but thrive with our diligence and the ideas of each other. 😊

Our beef was on sale too so I decided to batch cook beef redang. And since I still had so many ingredients leftover from the Asian shop, I made an extra 5 portions of redang curry paste to freeze as well. A few years ago I would never have thought to make extra curry paste and freeze it. I would have probably left the ingredients to expire in the fridge, not realising there were other possibilities. Nowadays my freezer and I are best friends and anything that can be frozen goes in there. Which is a lot i´ve learnt over the years 😁

I always cooked a large amount of food as I had 6 children to feed. Now there are only the 2 of us - still cook big amounts to save energy - paid for plus mine. We don't mind having the same meal each day - as far as we are concerned - it is dinner - a lot of people don't have food in the world.

I cook two big meals per week. I try to cook enough that my husband gets 2 or 3 lunches for work, then take the leftover's and put in the freezer for another meal. Since I don't work outside the house I typically just scrounge around and find food. I have leftover plain spaghetti noodles from the big meal this week. Won't waste those I'll put them in a soup or something, or just a little butter and garlic for my dinner. On his days off I cook another big meal that we share together and try to make it stretch. Found a good deal on some pork last night put it all in the freezer.

Brilliant, thanks. It makes so much sense to batch cook, particularly now with energy costs so high. I also love having meals ready in the freezer and being able to use them on busy days. Also, I hate thinking what to cook - having a stock of 'ready meals' in the freezer helps get over this hurdle on busy days.

Thanks Jane - I would love for you to do a Friday cook episode on falafel. Also I really enjoyed hearing about your experience with being gluten free in France. I appreciated you saying about the challenges of safely eating out. It would be brilliant to hear your experiences of gluten free living - dealing with travel, managing a mixed GF and Non GF kitchen, product availability etc. I've had a relatively recent diagnosis of coeliac and whilst I am thriving now it can feel socially isolating. I too am a teacher, overseas, thifty and also GF but with a young family. Please keep signposting the GF it makes me feel included so much budget cooking on other channels is with gluten based menus. Thank you ❤️

I have always batch cooked. When my children were young, if I made a batch of spaghetti sauce or chili, for example, I would make enough for at least 6 meals. Saved time & saved money. Now living alone, pretty much any recipe I make is "batch cooking" and I end up with left over portions. Just before I watched this video, I made a batch of waffles. I enjoy one fresh and then freeze the rest for my own toaster waffles.

I wouldn't say that I do it at every meal, but most of the meals that I cook for the two of us have enough to last for two or three dinners. My husband has never been a picky eater; he will eat whatever I put on the table. I am sometimes picky. I am doing much better at eating up leftovers before they go bad or freezing them. You probably don't realize just how much you and Mike are changing lives. You encourage us so much in our attempt to be more mindful of our spending and in our attempt at frugality. Keep on doing what you do. Now more than ever, channels like yours are much needed.

I do batch cook because it's just me, well, have a houseguest for a few weeks now but usually by myself. I retired today!! Trying not to spend any more money for food this month so am eating up everything from my freezer and cupboard. My first retirement check won't come for months probably. I still have lasagna and leek & potato soup I need to eat from the freezer.

We are a family of eight with five children and my mother in our home, and most of our children are teenagers. I do try to batch cook, but it never seems to last more than 24 hours in this season of our lives! 😊 My mom made a huge pot of soup for dinner last night, for example, and there were only 2 portions left by lunchtime today. That’s ok, I’m glad we are able to feed our family, but I’m always surprised how quickly it goes! I do find freezing ingredients rather than whole meals, such as pre-chopped onions or peppers, works very well for me to prevent waste and make us more likely to cook at home.

Great meals! I batch cook as I’m single and I’ve eaten from my freezer most of this week. I’ll be making a veg hotpot and a veg broth for next week plus have a few meals from the freezer but I’ll put a few potions of the hotpot into the freezer so I’m rotating the stock in there. I bought a huge butternut squash for £1 so I’ll be making a curry with that as well as using it in the hotpot. I’ll probably get a soup out of it too as it’s so big! Gotta love a bargain! 🤗😉

There are certain meals like bolognese, chilli, curry’s, soups that I can’t imagine cooking just two portions of, so they are always batch cooks by default in a 2 person household. We usually eat a second portion a day or two after the first go, and freeze the third.

Tend to make big pots of pasta sauce, 4-6 pizza doughs, 2 sweet pie dough and 2 savory pastry dough, mix up several different marinades in ziplock bags and throw some meat (mostly chicken) into them to freeze for later, when I make lasagna or enchiladas i will make 2 more for the freezer, cant make a small pot of chili/soup/stew to save my life so I always freeze up enough for about 2 more meals.

Batch cooking I have been doing well over 20 yrs.. I had 3-sons and a husband including myself to feed.. I would buy in bulk when meat was at rock bottom prices.. example Hamburger was on sale for .99lb ( yes going back at least 15 yrs) I would buy 20/30 lbs and make up meatballs, meatloaf, chili, lasagna, etc and freeze.. we ate leftovers fast forward I learned to pressure can that changed my world as I could can meals in a jar such as meatloaf, beef in a wine sauce, taco meat etc as well as freezer meals.. I also cook rice and freeze in 2-cup portions as well as make potatoes to mash then freeze also in 2-cup portions... I use to love making bread pudding using my home made bread and freeze that for a already made desert.. that led to buying strawberries on sale, slicing them , putting in a freezer container add sugar and freeze.. making homemade sweetened biscuits freezing them so whenever I wanted strawberry shortcake all I had to do was pull from the freezer and make homemade whipped cream..once I learned to can I now have several varieties of pie fillings to pick n choose from.. make homemade pie crust n freeze.. Tonight I will make homemade pizza including the crust and we will eat tonight n tomorrow for lunch...

Thank you for sharing your food vid. I regularly scroll through your recipe section for inspiration, and have added some real favorites to our list. Also very fond of your cauliflower soup from your earlier website. Now I am retired, cooking is easier. Batch cooking or cooking ahead (which I do at the weekend because electric is cheaper), prevents us ordering out. We are tired at the end of the day and its nice to have something that just needs heating up. We also are coming to terms with empty fridge syndrome. We used to have a psychological need to keep it stocked (and throwing alot away because we could not outfit the stash). I envy your quality of food. We just do not have that in Holland. We visited Niort last year and went to a market (covered). It was great, such wonderful produce, so fresh, mostly organic, and price wise jawdroppingly good. The different range of meats, oh my! We wanted to eat more healthy and add more veggies to our meals, seems like the frugal way has helped us do that too. We don't view it as being frugal, to us its eating healthier. Thank you once again. M.

I buy joints of meat when on offer, cook them in the oven together and slice and freeze what we are keeping for later. Some thinly sliced for sandwiches, others sliced thicker for main meals. I can then defrost and pop into gravy to warm through whilst my veggies cook. I also love fresh veggies, so have a veg prep day then freeze various casserole meals uncooked but ready to go into the slow cooker on those busy days. Saves veggies going off in the fridge too. You can throw the rice, tinned tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, chicken pieces etc into a bag or container, then take out the night before to defrost, straight into the slow cooker, not hard 😊 If you have mince and tattles, the extra is popped into pasties and frozen.

Yes I also batch cook but not vast amounts. I bought a small chicken from Aldi yesterday, roasted it up whilst I had the oven on for other things. Cooked a stir fry up today with a load of veg and noodles. We will have the same tomorrow as some chopped veggies left. The rest of the meat I will cook up with some onion, mushrooms, stock with flour to thicken. With either mashed or sliced potato topping, swede and carrot on the side. The bones I will then boil up with bay leaves, onion, carrot or water I have to make stock which I then add whatever veg is leftover in the fridge to make a soup. If I make a spag bol we have it for two day running then the leftovers I add a can of kidney or butter beans, cayenne pepper, cumin to make a chilli which will be another couple of days of meals. This is what I call batch cooking. If we don’t fancy mince again it will go into the freezer for the next week. 😻❤️🙏

Found a bag of red bell peppers for 99¢ so I used one with a few carrots and celery, some sad green onion from the vegetable bin. Added a stock cube, a can of crushed tomatoes, garlic powder and let it simmer. Added the cooked rice and I had enough for lunch and now have a big container to put in the freezer for another day. Only just got time to watch but very useful. I batch cook a lot of our meals, alth that often means just one for dinner and one for the freezer. I always cook a large amount of tomato pasta sauce as it's so useful to have in the freezer, can take out and be added to other dishes, for a pasta bake or bolognese, but also as it is and flavoured differently - maybe with chilli or with fresh basil. I live with two pasta fiends so that helps! I also follow your ideas of prepping any veg that needs using,; I currently have bags of chopped peppers, celery and sliced leeks in the freezer. And those Cornish pasties look amazing, really professional, my OH would be on those like a shot!

This week I have overnight oats packed with goodies like chia seeds, almond spread, vanilla essence & frozen blueberries & mango for brekky which I put some coconut yoghurt & nutmeg on. I've made pasta with home made sauce with lentils, carrot, capsicums, onion, broccoli, champignons, herbs etc and also beans/rice/veggie made flavourful (garlic/onion sprinkles, soy sauce, some of the pasta sauce) - I'll interchange these for lunch/dinner. I've made snack size orange jellies, and chia seed puddings as well as home made trail mix. Some fresh fruit for the week, all sorted! I almost always cook for two days or more when I make a big stew, lentil/splitpea or white bean soup, pastasause bolognese, potato or rice salade, Chinese rice or stirfried veg in Asian gravy. Even pancakes can be frizen and fruitsalade can be batch cooked in summer ( I mix with orange apple or grape juice to keep it fresh).
Love to batch cook and freeze. I take out frozen food a day ahead and defrost it in to the refrigerator, at breakfast time I take lunch (vegetable soup mostly) out of the fridge so it doesn't need that much time to reheat. And afther lunch I take out dinner. Today I reheated yesterday's stirfried chicory with ham in sauce (water, stockcube and tapioca/cornflour) to mix with gf pasta and a bit of grated cheese on top for extra creamyness. (it taste great over boiled potatoes too😊)

We are also just the two of us. The microwave is my best friend for heating up leftovers the next day. Right now we are working on using up chili, and creamy cheesey turkey broccoli pasta. Left over turkey was frozen from xmas.

I was really interested in your home and some before and after photos of all the rooms, etc. Could you put together a video with detail photos before and after of all the rooms, all the interior work you did, Windows you added etcetera? The bathrooms, the bedrooms Etc? Would love to see more detailed information about how you accept your house. And what did your family think about you moving to Brittany? Is there a lot of bureaucracy buying your home Etc?

I try to batch cook at least once a week mostly during a week day. Then with it, I eat one or two suppers and lunches throughout the week. Have you ever had vegetable soup over a baked potato?

Yes, we definitely batch cook and eat two days in a row..I've free electricity units tomorrow between 9 and 5 PM...so a large roast chicken dinner, a beef lasagne, and a slow cooker mixed bean chilli...put into fridge and that will bring us up to and including wed/Thur...and then just serve with garlic bread ( sliced in toaster, side salads, or egg fried rice from the fridge )... and as I've free electricity, the hovering will be done, the washing machine will do around 3 x loads, and the tumble drier if necessary..the dishwasher which is full to the brim, and a bit of ironing...and I will crawl up the stairs totally wrecked..lol....there's no other option with the prices still rising...

Not much into batch cooking. My neighborhood prone to power outages. And right now, living on the California Central Coast, three more storms to get through the next week. The most powerful one tomorrow. And since I am cutting back on calories...I am finding making a really nice deli sandwich, I only eat half and the other half goes into a ziplock for the next day. Since I inventoried my fridge and freezer today, if a power outage, my planned first leftover veggies to add to a soup will probably thaw and be useless but instead of throwing it away today, am leaving it to help keep the freezer frozen through these next set of storms. I do have leftover rice I froze off. If I end up eating it cold it will be much better than my homeless days. Had monthly income but access to decent foods was sometimes challenging. So not going to complain as I have healthy food to mix it with probably the frozen mixed veggies as they will thaw. Have thermometers in both the fridge and freezer to monitor good safety issues. My daughter has kids about an hours drive and her concerns of the power going out. She liked the idea of premade sandwiches, and some of the kids to cut in half ahead of time. She is considering thi quick grab and go meals for the kids from the fridge in case the kids get hungry and these are premade meals. Seems like each storm we are moving up skill levels and updating both our ER and Go bags and watching our tight budgets. Miss batch cooking which I did when married. In the near future am hoping to buy batch produce from the local farmers market and do dehydrating especially for adding to soup mixes. Oh. My daughter has been incorporating more batch cooking as the older kids have changing food tastes and different school activity schedules. Individual servings to freeze off, then once they get home, they can pull from the freezer and put into a two quart crockpot and then by the time they settle in, they have a great hot meal. They prefer their moms cooking over fast food anyways.

I love batch cooking, so on nights when I don't feel like cooking I can just pull something out of the freezer.
Can you please share your recipe for falafels? Thank you.

I only cook with red wine, we don’t drink it. If I need a glass for a recipe, I freeze the rest in ice cube trays, then transfer them to bags.

I have a tiny RV frig with a small freezer. I do batch cook, so I tend to eat it daily because I don't have room in my freezer. Normally, I attempt to make meals that make 3 or 4 servings.

Oh, yes, I've always been pretty good about eating the same food two days in a row-- leftovers is what I call them. Guess it is batch cooking. Doesn't make sense to me to just make a one serving meal.

  • @wallflowersuk

Yes we batch cook pretty much the same way you do, sometimes we will hav the same meal for 2 days, sometimes we will freeze the second half of a big dish meal, and take something previously saved out of the freezer
It works so well for us
sometimes if we have a lot of something, we will do a large batch cook for the freezer

Like you Jane I try to make extra rather than having a batch cooking day. Last weekend I made spaghetti and meatballs. Made extra meatballs for the freezer and a cottage pie for the next day's meal. Determined to stretch the mince beef out. If I make a crumble topping for desserts I triple the recipe and freeze to save time later. When using the slow cooker for curries, soups and sauces I try to make enough for the freezer. Unfortunately it doesn't always work to plan with growing boys in the house.

I batch cook for two reasons: firstly it saves energy, and secondly I don't like cooking so I'll make a big veggie lasagne, and it will feed us both 4 days worth of dinners. I've also brought the pressure cooker out of retirement to save energy.

I batch cook 4 days of food at a time. I usually eat what I cooked 4 days in a row but from time to time, after 3 days I decide to do another batch cooking and will freeze the 4th meal of previous batch. For those 4 days, the base is the same but vegetables, sauce and garnish differ from meal to meal. It is enough not to get bored.
