Most young men want to go fast. Myself included. Fast everything. But after you get a lot of experience going fast, you realize that there is more. I’m glad to see you slow a little and enjoy each other’s company and the trail more. Thanks for every single video you have Made.

Two people hiking together. One thinks they are going to fast and the other to slow. I mostly hike alone as it's just easier to go at my own pace and hike when I want to. Also, because now that I am old none of my friends care to backpack any more or can.

10 miles 100 miles 1000 miles spending time on the trail is always a win.

Brilliant. It always wasn't that way though. Your first videos were very awkward. Your hiking, like your videos have matured like a fine wine. You and I came from opposite perspectives with backpacking. You started solo and had to find your way hiking with people. This trip was a perfect example. You were just present and you stayed that way. I started with groups and had to learn the wonderfulness of solo hiking. My only regret backpacking was that I couldn't share the Sierra Nevada's with my wife. I told here give me one chance to get you over the eastern ridge and I'll never ask again. She did, got hooked but still had to remind me a cpl seasons later that "You asked me to be here, Im not you, I'll never hike like you, so you're going to have to hike like me to share this with me". Perfectly said. I got it. There really are 3 completely different forms of backpacking. Solo, with a group, and with a mate. They are wildly different and differently wonderful. I'm glad you two could find that sweet spot. Thanks for the effort to share it with us. Truly you are the number one inspiration for my ultra light attitude. Its been really fun.

Hi Jupiter! My Gf and I are from Germany and dream about doing the AZT next year, but because of our jobs, have quite limited amount of time to do the whole thing. I think your video really inspire us to consider "doing less but enjoy every minute of it" is always an option. Thanks for sharing this great trail with us, looking forward to your next videos :)

I am planning to hike the Long trail this summer and this video made me realize that maybe it isn't as important to do the full trail as I thought. The first thing I thought of was getting to Canada but maybe I don't need to rush it. Even doing the first 100 miles would be a big milestone for me and I would not have to make the same sacrifices with my time that I would doing the full 272. I am re thinking my thru hike in a good way because of this video, thanks for giving me a new way to view the long trail.:)

Hey Jupiter and Lotus! Im really glad you guys “went for it” too! Another epic film. You really captured just what this area of the country throws at you from time to time. Stunning and brutal. IMHO you made a perfect decision to respect your relationship and to love the miles you had together. It’s is a very inspiring decision to me. Your journey was so beautiful and full of so much growth and love. I am so thankful that you decided to share it with us. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.
    -Grateful
PS: If you find yourself in eastern MA, you always have a spot to park the van at my house. We can even go to the local disc golf course and throw some! Be well 🙏

To everyone: Never place mileage, or getting from point a to point b above your woman (or your children). It would seem a no brainer to say but it seems fitting.

One of the things I love about hiking is that you never know exactly what is going to happen. If you did, it wouldn’t be an adventure.
btw, I love Lotus’s contributions in this series!

We need more vids with both of y'all! Loved both this one and your shared florida trail series. Lotus def brings a different vibe which makes things even better imo. Loved the narration and beautiful shots. Now that John Z is back along with your great content, I'm very satisfied with my backpacker youtube entertainment!

The Greens are fantastic. I love them, the Whites and the Adirondacks. These are all great hiking, and it is in my back yard. The rule of hiking in this area, is that the trail just goes up. Very little switch backs. The wind on top, dries you out.

I lived there also and I think the Whites taught me the most. Maybe I should get back there again. Love those bare, windy tops.

Great grand video. But as you said, "bittersweet." I can't say exactly why, but yeah. That is what it was, bittersweet. Jupiter is a good egg and I bet Lotus, also a good egg, thought the same.

I really loved this series of videos. Even though you have hiked so far and completed so many big hikes you come across very humble and real. Because of that you make through hiking seem accessible and doable. Having a good attitude about adjusting expectations is so important!

So, I've watched pretty much all your videos of your 11,000 miles hiking experiences, but you both only managed 170 miles on the Long Trail?
Well, I reckon you also managed the best, most contented smiles I've seen from any of your hikes...
Wonderful, and looking forward to more..
    Thanks to you both.. !

Great series of videos. Fantastic editing and narration. Although you put these together after the hike, the narration was clearly what you felt at the time of the filming. I hiked the LT 6 years ago at age 71 and agree that the LT is hard but very doable for an experienced hiker. Glad you were able to reconcile cutting the hike short and enjoy the experience together. ---Handlebar

I just retired and plan on doing the long trial this fall. I am using it as a shake down to the PCT. I am used to this type of hiking since I am a Whites hiker. I am drawn to the PCT for the open views, dry climate, mostly smoother trials and switch backs. My body can only take so much. I am hoping to do the LT in three weeks, but I am in no rush. Fourteen days would kill me for sure. We call that a death march. You did a very nice job filming this and I hope your girlfriend's knee is feeling better. Take care

Forty years ago I hiked the Long Trail but the other way. We came to the same conclusion -enjoy the hike. We only had 17 or 18 days and hiked until we ran out of time. Those rocky mountains and hiking in the fog are with me still.

  • @stevenagle615

Hiking with a partner or with friends is totally different than a solo hike.
Once you partner up on a hike it's about the group or your partner, not about you anymore. Imo, good call on slowing down and finishing together.

You mentioned the difficulty of the northern section of the long trail. How would you rate the difficulty of the northern section of the LT to the difficulty level of the IAT?

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The long trail might be physically harder, but the IAT would be harder in every other way. With logistics, long resupply carries, a language barrier, navigational trouble. The Long Trail is more established and has been around longer, so something like the IAT might be closer to how it may have felt decades ago I would think

Could anyone recommend a good pair of hiking shoes or boots for someone with a completely flat (only my left) foot?
**Long backstory** I had foot surgeries as a kid which has placed the heel on my left foot off to the left a bit and rendered the foot completely flat. I've hiked the West Highland Way back in 2010 and it nearly destroyed the instep of my foot (even with moleskin). I used (and still have, although the midsole has come completely unglued, Asolo 520 GV goretex boots with Superfeet (super greenies I think) inserts. I had a gash that took roughly 3-4 years to fully heal. I was also over-loaded in my pack since this was my first ever nearly 100 mile hike...roughly 50-60 lbs (ridiculous I now know).
