Hey Sar, I’m an integrative registered dietitian with a focus on gut health and when someone’s gut is compromised, food sensitivity and intolerance tests are just going to show sensitivities and intolerances to the foods you commonly eat because the gut lining is damaged. When the gut lining is damaged, you’ll react to most foods you eat- not because the food is bad, but because your gut health is. It’s a symptom of the problem. Not the problem. It is recommended to wait to test for sensitivities/intolerances until after adhering to a gut health protocol to heal the lining and build resistance of the gut microbiome. Even then, those tests are not very accurate in showing what’s really going on leading people to cut out more foods than necessary damaging their gut even more. I know you’re doing your best as a mom and I totally get that especially with Moo moo being so young, but I would treat him based off the GI stool map test and current symptoms focusing on building resilience rather than cutting out foods due to the sensitivity/intolerance test.

As someone who studied nutrition, I know those intollerance tests can be prone to a lot of error. In general, the more you test for, the more 'intollerances' or 'allergies' will show up. I'm not saying poor Mali doesn't have these intollerances, but that's a LOT. It might be worthwhile seeking a second opinion about those test results.

So true, and it does depend on what is looked at. IGg (IGe or IGa = a food you may have an issue (intolerance) with) antibodies, which are present when you consume foods that you are tolerant to, are often looked at and when you get your results back - the list of foods is so large and most often it is foods you regularly consume.

Dear Sarah, I do not mean to intrude on the decisions you make for the health of your family, but as a dietitian, I would like to point out that there is no research to support "sensitivity" tests. I assume the test you used is based on IgG analyses. IgG is a molecule of the immune system that indicates a reaction to particles such as from food. Even in healthy people, small "undigested" particles from food will permeate from the gut into the blood and will lead to an IgG reaction. This is why all the foods Malakai usually eats show up in the analysis. It is true that with increased inflammation and other underlying problems, it is possible that gut permeability can increase (what people sometimes call "leaky gut"), and there will be more food fragments in the blood and, thus, more IgG. However, this does not mean that these foods are a problem. On the contrary, restricting the variety of foods may have adverse effects, such as decreasing microbiome diversity and making it significantly harder for you to plan balanced meals and adequate nutrient intake. Hope this helps! All the best for little Malakai.

I am a passionate evidenced based Naturopath and completely agree with this comment. I’m not commenting on this message to shame or provide judgment to Sarah because I can’t imagine how bloody hard it’s been for her over the last few years. I also imagine she’s tried to do heaps of research and do everything she can for Maleki and her family. I don’t usually like to comment because I feel like it’s usually not my place to comment on what someone chooses to do without them asking for advice etc. However, I know people would be interested in this and want to read comments and I would hate for others to feel that this is the solution to their issues. Those tests are not very evidenced based and it’s always a red flag to me when I see a test say that you need to cut out lots of food groups. We know from the research how incredibly important diversity is in the diet. I don’t know the details of the case so I won’t comment further on what I would recommend apart from maybe considering a second opinion before you make a big drastic change like this, particularly from a qualified evidenced based professional. And given the severity and history it would actually be out of our scope of practice as a Naturopath to be diagnosing with these “intolerances”. It would be best to speak to an immunologist etc. Just FYI for anyone wanting to see a Naturopath they are amazing and do incredible things everyday to change people’s health and lives. However, the industry is not regulated meaning that there is inconsistent standards amongst Naturopaths out there in addition to no regulation around the term Naturopath (you could do a 2 week tea course and call your self a Naturopath or do an incredibly scientific 4 years bachelor degree and have the same title). If you are wanting to see a Naturopath ask who their association is (a temporary way of dealing with a lack of registration) and don’t be afraid to ask for evidence. :)

I went down a crazy rabbit hole with several naturopaths a few years back and had the same results - results came back sensitive to everything in my daily diet. I’ve since learned this is because your body naturally produces IgG in response to food; the more of a food you eat, the more IgG your body produces. Just another take on this to keep in mind, as I know I was very overwhelmed when I went through this process for myself, so I can only imagine how overwhelming it is going through it with your child. The food results may help directionally, but it could do more harm than good to cut out everything very strictly long term.

And from my understanding the link between this is a leaky gut. When you have leaky gut, anything you’re eating is leaving the gut barrier, and being reacted to by your immune system. So that’s why when you have leaky gut, you’ll see a lot of food intolerances. It’s not the foods, it’s the intestinal permeability.

Something to consider - since the test is showing sensitivity to foods that he was eating a lot of, that could mean that his underlying inflammation/low immune function is causing his body to not tolerate foods as well, not that the food is the direct issue. Supplementing him with vitamin D could help if you aren’t already. Temporarily removing the higher allergen foods such as dairy, gluten, and tree nuts could help too.

Respectfully I don't think it's fair for Fox or for the rest of the family to miss out on eating all the food you already love. I think you just have to adapt Malakai's diet and he has to grow up learning what food he can eat and which ones he shouldn't. The effort on your part is just making a different meal for him. I lived the we all have to eat what everyone eats and it's was awful. Like I get that it's a lot of effort but maybe you can plan it out in a way that makes it easier to just make him food for him. Just as much he need a certain diet, Fox and Kurt and yourself have needs. Nutricional needs and I don't think it can be replaced with anything. I get that this is what you wanted to avoid but I think it's the best thing you can do for everyone involved.

As a fellow food intolerant person… intolerances are not allergies. When you have an intolerance to certain foods it doesn’t mean you “can’t have” those foods. You just have to limit them as you can only tolerate a certain amount. You don’t have to eliminate all those foods altogether. Just make adjustments, it’s a process. If Mali anything like me his intolerances will curve, they’ll be worst when he is young and again when he is old. So hopefully what you are going through now improves as he grows. Good luck x

Hi Sarah! Long time viewer and first time commenter. I don't know what type of food sensitivity test you did for Malakai, but I suspect it might have been an IgG food panel test. I just wanted to let you know that those food sensitivity tests actually have not been scientifically proven to accurately test for food sensitivities/intolerances at all. Your body makes IgG antibodies to every food you eat, even those you are not sensitive/intolerant to. The more of a certain food you eat, the more IgG antibodies to that food you will have. That might explain why Malakai's test came back showing high IgG antibodies to a lot of his most commonly eaten foods. I absolutely don't see any harm in eliminating these foods for some time and seeing how he does. If he improves - great! But I felt compelled to comment because I don't want you to completely upend your life for a test that doesn't have much evidence backing it. Like you said, this is a huge change for you and your family, and it might not be necessary. Also, a lot of those foods you are eliminating have huge nutritional value. I know you trust your naturopath, and no shade to them (I have worked with very good naturopaths in the past), but it might be worth doing your own research here and consulting an allergist/immunologist if you want to do some real allergy testing.

As a doctor I would just like to urge you to look more into this. I do not stand by food intolerance tests because - in the most basic explanation - they will basically rise and show what you commonly eat and your body processes, it is incorrect to say that when you have elevated Ig for a specific food you are allergic.
To change from a healthy diet to all processed foods might not be your answer

I think it would be smart to get a second opinion. Maybe go to an allergologist/immunologist - just for a second opinion, because I have also seen a lot of test coming back with huuuuuge changes like this (it depends on the testing technique and the lab) but in the end it was not true at all. I'm not against alternative medicine, but before starting huge changes like this - I think it would be smart to at least consult a western medicine specialist.

I’m not an immunologist or doctor but I do work for the ambulance and I can say from experience we go to a lot of little kids around Mally’s age, and they are frequently sick. Most parents I chat to say their kids are getting croup/flu/colds/bronchiolitis etc pretty much every few weeks/at least once a month. It’s a really hard age because they want to touch and eat everything 😅 And even though he doesn’t go to daycare, Fox does, and while Fox may not be getting sick, he could easily be bringing bugs home that Malakai just hasn’t built up an immunity to yet. It’s super common 😊

Evidenced based Studying Naturopath here (soon to graduate) commenting just because I know a lot of people will read the comments :). Completely agree with what the RDs have said. As someone super passionate about evidenced based practice it’s frustrating to see this test used, as again like everyone has said those tests are highly inaccurate and not evidenced based. Just FYI with the severity of Maleki’s health history it is actually OUT OT OUR SCOPE OF PRACTICE to see him. This needs to be addressed by a qualified immunologist etc. Besides we know from THE EVIDENCE that diversity is key for microbiome health and cutting out all of those foods will probably do more harm to his immune system later on than good, unless they are an actual allergy. I also want everyone reading these comments to know that just because this has happened there are still some incredible Naturopaths out there but you really need to do your research before seeing one. Unfortunately Naturopaths are not a regulated profession meaning that 1. Anyone can call themselves a Naturopath (someone who has done a 2 week tea course vs someone who has done a 4 year bachelor of health science degree). 2. There is a lack of standards that Naturopaths need to follow hence tests like these can be prescribed. My recommendation to anyone seeing a Naturopath is it can literally change your life and your health (being in clinic it’s incredible the things that we do and how we help people) but PLEASE ask for where they studied, who they are registered with and don’t be afraid to question the evidence behind what they are prescribing etc..

As a lot of the other comments have said, be careful with the blood test for food intolerances from natropaths. If it's a "IgG" antibody test, these likely just show your immune system reacting to food you eat, not necessarily as an intolerance. I was falsely told I was intolerant to Dairy, which I avoided for almost a decade, I was not! Time lost eating cheese for no reason = sad.

You shouldn't need to cut out all those foods from his diet. It's likely showing intolerance to those foods because they're the foods he eats the most. Look into histamine intolerance and also approaches to improving gut health/leaky gut. Sometimes it's helpful to temporarily remove gluten, dairy, eggs and nuts as an elimination diet and then gradually reintroduce them but unless he has celiac disease or an allergy permanent removal of these foods should not be necessary.

Hi Sarah! My sister had a weak immune system (low IgA and IgG) and when she was fifteen or so, we found an ortomollecular doctor (new medicine, basically) and the problem was the absorption of nutrients in her guts, so with diets adjustments and some amino acids supplements, she got her immune system stable and now she does eat whatever she wants. I know everyone’s experiences are unique, but as I read in some of the comments down below, it would be nice to find alternative opinions and see how everything is progressing

so we went through this with my son, and we did the no dairy and no gluten and and cut out a bunch of random stuff for him.. It was very bland know it was pretty extensive and it seemed crazy but we did that for a few months and then we slowly added things back now I know what he can handle and I don’t need a test to tell me or stranger., he is intolerant to a few things, but if it’s limited time only offered once in a while he does a great. I wish you the best of luck, and I am so excited to see this journey. Nowadays food is so compromised it does not have the same nutrition in it and there’s so many added oils so many added pesticides you just never know what you’re actually eating so I don’t think this hurts to be cautious!

Sounds like Mally has leaky gut. When all the things he typically eats shows up on the test that usually means the food particles are leaking into the bloodstream and the body is attacking it. I had the same thing happen. The thing that helped me SO much was gelatine. I noticed I start reacting to foods again when I get out of the habit of eating gelatine.

Hi Sarah! I’m going on 2 years with long covid, endometriosis and histamine intolerance. My diet is still very limited but it’s gotten so much better than what it was. I thought I was allergic to basically all foods because I kept reacting to it all post covid. It took time to bring down the inflammation levels and heal my gut by cutting out dairy/gluten/nuts/red meat. One thing that I’ve found recently that has been SO helpful is red light therapy. I’ve been reintroducing foods and then doing red light therapy after eating. It has been incredibly helpful with inflammation and circulation and settling whatever is happening in my gut. For me, I feel like it has been helping me tolerate more foods and preventing my histamine load/bucket from overfilling.

If you aren’t already under and immunologist I highly recommend it! Gosh that field is so so clever! For 10plus years I had skin and bowel issues and always caught every bug going, and they’d absolutely knock me out too! Genetic testing is what eventually diagnosed me. I used the company invitae in America (I’m based in NZ) and they can test all these different panels/categories.

I’m so sorry he’s struggling so much in his first years! Unfortunately, research has shown that when kids get Covid-19 it really hurts their immune systems and makes it more difficult to fight off regular viruses and things that they typically would have no problem with, leading to them being sick more often and severely. A possible solution could be to try and be more cautious about social events and exposing him to more Covid-19 and other pathogens, I know it’s tough! Sending your family love ❤

Hey Sar! I'm so sorry about poor little Moo Moo and all of his health issues. I know this would take much longer but have you considered doing an elimination diet with him to figure out what specific foods are causing flares, especially for the skin issues? I just thought that if it's only a few main culprits, maybe you wouldn't have to be so restrictive as a household with the whole list. I had one of those comprehensive tests done too years ago and it was pretty much everything I was eating at the time. While I do have a couple specific food intolerances (dairy and gluten) that I figured out with the elimination diet, the test results were mostly just a sign that my gut health needed some serious assistance. You're an amazing mom though and I know your mummy intuition will guide you toward what's best for your tribe. I hope he feels better SOON!! Best of luck!

We've also done the test and it turned out he couldn't have sooo many things (including dairy, soy, coconut everything, bananas and a LOT more), on the test it also showed what bacterias were low in his system. We cut everything out and got him pro and probiotics with those missing bacterias. It took us 3 months of very restrictive diet. Then slowly we reintroduced dairy ect. its been six months since the test and now he can eat everything again!

They are just intolerances not that he’s allergic too them. Doesn’t mean he can’t have them, you just need to lessen the amount of the foods he’s more intolerant too. If you just suddenly switch his diet completely cutting out everything you could actually created a bigger issue with him. You said there are some of the foods he tested intolerant too that he eat on a very regular basis. Those foods he’s eating a lot of I would just cut down. Also on a side note these food intolerant test are not always accurate. Maybe see another Dr that uses a different test and see how it comes out? Personally that’s what I would do. Don’t stress yourself out.. Just cut back on the foods he normally eats very frequently that he tested intolerant for. My son was constantly sick from age 2-5. It was non-stop. He was on so many antibiotic which actually created the vicious cycle! Antibiotics are death to the body!
It takes the body minimum of 3 months to build the immune system back up from 1 dose of antibiotics. So he was so immune suppressed and before he could get his immune system back up if he came into contact with anything he got it. Then back on antibiotics which depleted him again and even more. This happen repeatedly and he could never go past 3 months before he got sick again. He had pneumonia so many times he had to be put to sleep and have his lungs sucked out because there was so much mucus and bacteria. I started doing everything I possibly could naturally to bump up his immune system. He needs to take zinc, D and C. I also gave my son elderberry, probiotics/kefir (make sure you do everything you can for his gut health) fermented foods. If he’s taken a lot of antibiotics you have to do everything you can to help not expose him to germs so he can build up his immune before coming into contact with anything again. If it means limiting him from being with other children, going out a lot to public places it’s worth protecting him so his body can rebuild from being sick back to back and after all the antibiotics. Constantly sanitizing the house (door knobs, remotes(anything everyone to in the house touches regularly)Everyone sanitize their hands when your out and have a hand sanitizer right at your door and everyone sanitizes before they enter the house to prevent any germs being brought into the home. All your immune systems can fight things but Mali’s can’t so if your at the grocery store and you don’t sanitize your hands and touch things in the car, things at home or him you are passing the germs. It will be hard for a few months but it will be so worth it. I don’t know your whole story but if he’s having to take antibiotics with all these illness then absolutely his immune system is wiped out form the antibiotics. You have to do everything you can to protect him from getting in contact so his poor immune system can rebuild and give him all the extra support you can with supplements. I did this and we finally made it 4 mos with no illness and my son was never sick like that again. I finally saw an educated Dr who explained to me the vicious cycle of illness on top of illness and then with antibiotics how it just destroys the immune system and it will continue until you can break the cycle and get his immune system back up. Its critical. Also I’m a stage 4 cancer survivor who has relapsed 4x’s. I’ve been through 2 bone marrow transplants so I know a lot about the immune system. For many years my family had to protect me(especially the first year after each of my transplants) I basically lived in a bubble. We still have sanitize at each entrance to the home and everyone sanitizes before entering the home. You can do this👍 ❤

After about 3-4 I was able to eat most things again but gluten and dairy stayed, and I am to this day still sensitive to certain meats, but I eat meat in such rare instances now that when I do it’s not as bad! Also deer meat, lamb, goat, have been easier for me ❤

Someone please tell Sarah that the BEST flour is chickpea (garbanzo beans). It bakes well, doesn’t fall apart, isn’t a gross texture, and there’s no other ingredient. I have tons of food intolerances and allergies so I’m extremely restricted. It’s awful.
I’m not finished watching the video but I know Sarah will be great at adapting. It’s hard to find good stuff without the additives (I can’t do those and I’m sure he can’t either) so I will also suggest looking into “Medical Medium” recipes. They’re super clean and allergy friendly. I hope he gets much better!

How did you know it was safe to eat dairy again? And the other foods you had cut out of your diet? I've been following your channel back when you were very strict about dairy free and I know that when you got pregnant you were able to consume it again. This fascinated me and I don't believe I've heard much more about it since. Would love to learn!
