Shibas and shedding...

  • A water (aqua-) blower, in combination with a good comb, is a fantastic tool to ged rid of a dog's loose hair. Best is to bath your dog first, but even without a bath the blower works just fine, as you can see in this video.

    You have a beauitul Shiba! Obviously a show dog? i just have a few questions..
    Is this amount of shedding usual? If so how often does it shed like this? And does a bath beforehand help getting rid of most of the shed?
    Thanks ;)

    • @geertjanwagemans5225
      @geertjanwagemans5225 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of course all depends on the amount of wool a dog has. Not every Shiba has the same amount. However, for me, or for my dogs, this is very normal. Normally a dog sheds twice a year.
      Yes, bathing a dog when it's shedding is very good. Afterwards blowing the dog and the result is a "new" dog, but most of all, much lesser hair in your houde :).

And it's not a full on bark, but he lets me know people are around. HOWEVER, they are very smart dogs, and I'm sure you could train yours not to bark.

Each day it's like there's a whole dog laying next to them as you brush them out. It's shocking how much fur they lose and just doesn't seem possible. every time you think you have it all, there's always still more and more. You could knit a winter snowsuit for 3 people out of it! Shibas do have their moments but they learn very quickly. They also learn from other dogs in the house too. I have seven year old bitch two year dog and one year old. When the last one was puppy few weeks old. she allowed me to put on table and groom her. Soon other two dogs wanted that attention too.
      Now I have three puppies 4 month old learning with the treats.

    Has he always been that calm, or did you have to train him to stand still for you? If the latter, may I ask how you did it? Also, is this what you do to keep him fluffy, or is he fluffy regardless?
    I ask these questions because my Shiba is only calm when we take her some place she doesn't visit regularly(like the vet), she hates grooming of any kind(she gotten a little better with nail clipping, but it's still a 2 person job). She was also extremely fluffy when she was a puppy, but now her fur is mostly sleek.

    This is an update of the dog that is standing so patiently on the grooming table. When that video was taken, he was exactly two years old. But to be honest, despite his good behaving, he definitely is the busiest, most active Shiba I have ever owned. He is my ADHD-dog, and no one ever would have believed this after seeing this video. As busy as he is, so friendly and pleasant to have around you he is as well.
    A few days ago someone thought that by now he might already have passed. But he absolutely is very alive and kicking.
    On March 29 we did a photo shoot of him at the beach. If you like to, you can see the pictures on my FB-page. This album is set on "public" and this is the link: facebook.com/Redshibaman/media_set?set=a.2557035457643019&type=3&comment_id=2557179027628662&

    What kind of training did you use to keep your Shiba behaved in the show stance for this? Just treats, positive reinforcement, and lots of handling conditioning?

    • @redshibaman
      @redshibaman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      When a puppy that I bred stays with me, I start table training at a very young age. That is somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks. Of course most important of all is that the pup experiences this training in a very positive way. That can be a treat, that can be a friendly pet or kind words. That should be the basis of all training. There are more videos of show training at home (outside) on my channel.

    Most dogs shed twice a year, often in fall and spring. But since most dogs live indoors and are used to the temperatures inside our houses, dogs can and will shed each time of the year. The Shiba shown here in the video will have a thick, warm coat in about two months from now.

    What smart and proud dogs! It knows you're doing it a great favor getting rid of all that excess hair. Patiently it stands there, knowing it'll get relieved like a sheep and made fluffy and gorgeous.
    Good to see someone take such good care of these beautiful dogs!

    @LenneSammy Bathing about 20 minutes; combing and blowing about 30 to 40 minutes.

    It's incredibly satisfying to brush a Shiba when it's shedding! I have three. :) Something not quite as satisfying is all the hair. It's everywhere...

    This is a show dog. He is accustomed to this much grooming. No family Shiba would ever put up with the blower, or being groomed for this length of time. Just ask a Shiba owner about the first time they tried to give their Shiba a bath. Amazing dogs, but definitely NOT a breed for everyone. Study up on these regal princes before you get one.

    It always would amaze me how much hair got off my Shiba. Unfortunately she's not with us any longer. I miss her terribly but the hair I don't miss.

    Question. My gf and I are looking into getting a Shiba Inu. My gf is worried about the huge ammount of hair will be scattered through the house. Is it true that Shiba Inu looses a lot of hair (not counting the yearly shedding).

    It reminds me a lot of a GSD or Huskycoat, they shed like no bodies business. Gorgeous dog.
