@@Nomadic_Wanderlust_Adventures Cancún, or Playa del Carmen are pretty good. I've been there about 2 years. The cost of living is relatively affordable in both places but I have noticed it's more affordable in Medellín Colombia in terms of food, and clothing, entertainment. The rent in Medellín has increased drastically and the locals are complaining, which I totally understand.

I am a retired American living here in Medellin for about seven years now. And to my unfortunate suprise i have discovered that alot of tje Colombians here in this area can be quit rude and self-entitled....not all but a large majority i have found to be quit rude and would never say "Mi casa, su casa", let alone invite someone to there home. So many gringos in SD are scared to go to Baja but they're missing out, it's worth the risk. The hospitality is better than SD because it's genuine and a sort of warmth you can't describe to people that don't go. I'd live there if I didn't work on this side of the border.

Im ashamed to admit I believed all the stupid media in NA that painted Mexico as this "Midnight Express" type place. Until 2019 that is. I went to Yucatan and fell in love w the place, food, attitude, esthetics, culture, history, and most of all the people. I truly love Mexico. I bought a DVD set called "The Wonders of Mexico" done by PBS and I actually cried 😅 I was so moved and highly suggest others buy the dvds or download it. The physical beauty of Mexico is unparalleled. Their hospitality puts many other countries to shame. I'll be back in October and cannot wait 🙏🏻 I stay w friends (Mexican) and I am always sad in my heart when I leave them. Alas, it is only a 4 hr flight from Toronto! Take care, David. 😊

In general I had great experiences with Mexicans in Mexico City, Cancun, La Paz, and Veracruz. I like their politeness and formality. They are generally humble in my experieince. "They have the mentality of the pueblo" my Mexican friend told me. At the same time, another friend told me they are nice to foreigners but they will screw their fellow Mexican any chance they get. So maybe it helps to be an extranjero. The bad experiences I had were rare and minor. In most cases it had to do with their impatience around my spanish. I could see their eyes glaze over or they would look down at their nails as I tried to form a more complicated sentence. (Where I'm from, people are more patient with people who struggle with english). I have been learning spanish for several years and I just have a mental block that prevents me from becoming fluent but I can still express myself mas o menos. For the most part, the people I had problems with in Mexico were expats. Younger men (25-30) I met from Canada and the US were far more spoiled, entitlted and narcissistic than their Mexican counterparts. I think it has to do with family breakdown and poor child rearing in those 2 anglo countries, whereas in Mexico I think the family unit is still comparatively strong.
USA/Can are very wealthy countries and people can become spoiled by that wealth bc they are used to everything working and to getting a minimum level of service and quality. Time-pressured Type A personality behavior is much more common with anglos than with Mexicans. It can come across as rude to Latin Americans I think.

I would say that Mexico has been relatively stable socially the last 100 years. You can't say that about most Latin American countries, especially Colombia. You'd have to earn their trust first and I noticed that about Central Americans as well. The easiest country to make friends in though, is Cuba. Especially if you're a foreigner. Sure, it's transactional sometimes but once you've made a real friend in Cuba, it's for life.

I do plan to go back for another stay in Colombian, either this or next year, but, Mexico, will always own a piece of my heart. Right now, I am staying in one of the most local Mexican communities, very rare to see a gringo of any sort over in this part of town and I'm loving it. BTW, I'm a black American and I had to laugh, when last night, my Rappi driver pointed to his hair and was telling me I looked like his mother; the guy was so sweet and handsom with beautiful wavy hair. Also, I only speak a few words of Spanish, but, the people are always directing me and assisting me whenever I need help with understanding things.

I think the weather deeply influences human behavior on a broad social level. If it is sunny and nice Ensenada/San Diego weather it makes people happier, life easier than constant cloudy rainy weather... Rain translates to tears and sadness, sunshine to happiness and joy. Heaven is not a rainy place but a place full of sunshine when people think of it, also there is no marriage and no mosquitoes in it :)

I probably sound like a child in terms of language skills. That’s not the problem…..not blending in and accidentally finding myself in a location that’s not healthy for me ? That’s what makes me uncomfortable. The Mexicanos? Love them and their kindness and love for God. Much respect.

Colombians in Medellin are clicky and are not so welcoming to outsiders I think. Not to mention I want to close line the next moto that flies around the corner up my ass or people that cut you off in the metro or anywhere in general. At 6’3 I’m going to start running over these small dudes and not giving a dang.
Still a great place but I will definitely compare Manizales, Cali, and Santa Marta. The costs in Medellin are getting absurd. I doubt this is the place like all the people make it out to be on TH-cam .
Lastly, my mom is Mexican and I do have a Mexican Passport, I’ve only been to touristy beach or border spots, so I may look into this further. Thanks bro!

Colombia especially Antioquia had this type of hospitality 15 years ago, but it has been corrupted by western culture these past 10 years

Colombia is western culture, it's in the western hemisphere and was colonized by Catholics. I don't think you can blame foreigners for Colombia not being as good as before. Mexico has had gringo tourists/expats for decades and they still open their doors and keep their culture intact. Colombia just wasn't prepared for a influx of foreigners in a short period of time and ones that plan on staying long term. Boom and bust.

I have been living in North America(US/Canada) for the last 15 years and let me tell you that people here have very little hospitality with foreigners. But this is just my experience and point of view. It is always nice that you appreciate that Latin Americans are very welcoming.

Just remember this: you cannot call anyone amor (women) like they do in Colombia. It’s only for boyfriends or family. Mexican women will be very offended and their boyfriends angry if you do…

There are 30 states and the people, food, and culture can vary greatly from place to place. If I share an insight about "Americans" in rural Alabama, how does that apply to people in Downtown Oakland?
Let us not forget to mention there is an ongoing civil war in Mexico, for about the last 25-30 years. Conservative estimates put the number of civilian (non combatant) deaths around 300,000 people in that timeframe. Some areas are totally controlled by various cartels and have no meaningful government oversight. Entire legitimate industries have even been highjacked by some cartels.
Of course, the legitimacy of the controlling faction does not always correlate to the safety of a particular area. Some of the most toxic people I ever met in Mexico were wearing government uniforms. Municipal, State, and even sometimes Federal authorities in certain areas act badly.
I just encourage people to research carefully the areas they will choose to visit. I recommend making friends before you go. And don't be afraid of hiring a savvy local guide to show you the region. You may be surprised how affordable this idea is if you have not tried this before. Many entire regions are definitely "no-go" for the average traveler and at a local level, certain blocks in any large city may be off limits even if you have a guide.
    Have fun and travel safe.

I am a adventure motorcycle rider I have traveled from USA, Maryland to Panama. Mexico was the only country I felt uncomfortable with my safety. The corruption runs deep. It's all about who you know and who they are connected to. I now travel in Colombia by motorcycle and I yet to feel unsafe. Medellin is my launching point for my trips. I cover about 85% of the country so far. And have been doing it for 10 plus years. I am not saying Mexican people are bad but their is a underlying issue that effects everything

I'm from Germany, I spent 4 weeks in Mexico traveling the Yucatan Peninsula and I really liked the food and landscape.
I don't speak Spanish, so I assume that to be the reason for not connecting to people.
I visited Merida, Campeche, Progresso, Rio Lagartos, Tulum, Playa del Carmen & Cozumel. As a single guy, it was a lonesome but culturally interesting trip, but meeting Mexicans just did not happen (other than than hotel staff, waiters, tour guides etc).

Learning Spanish would enhance your experience. Without German, it's also difficult for foreigners to make real local connections in Germany.

Somebody gives me food one time and they become SOO FRIENDLY xD. "This culture is so GREAT, much better than my own." I have traveled a fair bit and fallen in the same trap. Then people from other countries reported to me they experienced this too while visiting my native Germany. There is usually a big difference between being a visitor somewhere, even if is in the same country, and actually living there. Visitors are usually treated differently and better, but they do not experience the normal difficult life with all the traps, hardships, grind of the daily life and dark facets of that culture.
