  • After being introduced to Ren just a week or so ago, I did a totally blind first reaction to "Hi Ren" last week. This song and performance knocked me between the eyes, especially since I din't know what to expect at all...
I was so hooked, though, that I decided to check out this interesting artist and songwriter so more. It was also suggested by a few of my followers that I check out this song, "Chalk Outlines". And well, here it is!
Check out my analysis of "Hi Ren" here:

I really hope you do The Tales of Jenny and Screech (FULL) the full is important, as it's a story song in 3 parts. It's lengthy, but worth it. More live performance, and use of surrounding reverb. And lyrically and musically it's brilliant.

Not only does his raw pitchiness not matter to me, but I find it a positive breath of fresh air in these days of highly manicured autotuned banalities.
A raw, live, one-take, one-mic record of vocal passion beats the crap out of the artifice that is our usual lot.

    • @TheChristOfRockNRoll
      @TheChristOfRockNRoll 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Singers like Ren gets away with being slightly and every now and then inaccurate pitch wise in fact this fact enhances his art rather than diminish it. That is because his soulful raw emotions overcompensates for pitch imperfections and comes across as expressive and at times elemental of conversationallike which is highly emotive. Auto-tune or even pitch corrections will erase this unique quality of artists like Ren. Not every singer can get away with this because they just don't have the depth of expression and intense feeling delivered by Ren type artists. While autotune will benefit the somewhat vocally weak singers on pitch matters it robs artists like Ren of character, expression and emotional connection. See how unfair the prevalent and standardised across the board use of this robotic device is upon artists if you are signed to a major record label.

Ren often picks spaces for the acoustics. If you do the Tales of Jenny and Screech (FULL), the third part has him moving through a building with deliberate pauses to provide natural acoustics from the spaces he's in. It's absolutely amazing and one of the most incredible bits of one-shot choreography I've ever seen or heard just for that.

I think that Ren's vocal style, that "push", that clarity , was something developed during the years he sang on the streets in Brighton. You are correct about Ren being self taught. There are several duets with Chinchilla, including some singing out on the streets. Chinchilla was a bit daunted at the idea, but Ren finally got her out there. Thanks for you sharing with us!

My favorite part about this song, towards the end of the bridge, while she's sort of whisper wailing behind him, it's just something really magical that they captured with the two emotions here. you have Ren giving off this numb sadness, and then her in the background with so much more pain emoted, but at the same time repressed. Combined, it somehow reminds me of that fraction of a second just before you cry, that tight, almost warm feeling you get in your throat, and then all the music drops out and it feels just like the tears fall. I don't know, I wish there was a word for it, i'm not even sure that description is coherent enough to follow, but it just fascinates me that they were able to both somehow capture that, and then convey it back to us.

I always felt that this song is a duality of the inner thoughts of one person, the ying and yang of our personality. This is the significance of the power outage before he gets the chair and guitar. It happens again just before Chinchilla is revealed. Just like Hi Ren, it signifies the dual personality within ourselves, the feminine and the masculine this time.

I love Ren because of what his music makes me feel. He’s so unique and talented but his talent is the whole of what he creates, if that makes sense. The singing is good, but it’s not “perfect”. I think that’s what I like about it though because I feel like perfection cuts out the emotion and meaning behind the words. Now, Chinchilla is a whole other world of talent. Her live performances (e.g. Fingers live for hunger tv and Little Girl Gone Requiem) will blow you out of the water.

The favorite thing I’ve heard in a Ren listen is a classical musician pointed out that while some of his guitar work sounds like good classical guitar, the way he holds his hands indicates that he taught himself. It’s quite impressive. Now, having you point out that the way he uses his voice, while very good singing, indicates him teaching himself. I think it’s amazing how he becomes interested in a new facet of creation and just does it, and excels. He’s both driven and talented, which is why he’s brilliant.

Great reaction! I really enjoy hearing your thoughts. I do feel, a little, that we lost out on hearing your initial reaction to it. I appreciate the honesty and I get if that sort of unknown can be daunting to broadcast, given the subject matters he touches on in his lyrics, but it's something very authentic about seeing someone experience it for the first time. I have thought about why that is, and I can only speak for myself here, but I think it is a little bit like experience it for the first time again. Anyway, if you do end up doing the Tale of Jenny and Screech trilogy I would ask you to at least consider doing it as a blind reaction - at least consider recording your initial reaction and then make up your mind if you feel comfortable putting it online. You're correct, Ren is self taught in singing as well as in all of his instrumentation, guitar, bass, piano, drums and beatboxing. He also has heavy influences from Jazz, Reggae and Ska genre's. One my favorite songs by Ren is "Ready For You", where he blends Jazz, Spoken Word & Rapping, with some impressive scatting and runs throughout that track. Also his performance; with his band The Big Push, in the mashup of "I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" is a must see where he blends a little blues, reggae, ska, scatting & rap seamlessly. Music just exudes from his pours🤯❤❤.

    • @wopaah
      @wopaah 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Anti-depressants, but also other pills for chronic mental and physical pains.
When KariSma says that the melody is kind of usual, well-known, pop-like, then I feel like it's specifically made dull just like the emotional state of people on those pills. There are clearly deep emotions going on in the words (and the singers bring them out vocally towards the end), but the guitar always floats somewhere in the middle, 'afraid' or 'unable' to stray from the 'lifeless' centre.

I like that you noticed the intentionality of the sound before he starts playing. The sound of the chair snapping open reminds me of the classic jail cell door closing sound, which sets a trapped kind of feeling for me. And then he starts, "I'm still here in this bed that I crawled in." Just sublime.
Ren is very deliberate, and has remarked that he thinks of his videos as part of the song creation process. It's a crazy ride, but if you're familiar with Orwellian themes, you might be interested in his "Animal Flow." It's a great example of his creativity, his thoughts on society, and his willingness to just let it all hang out there without worrying about how contemporary music should be. I love it, but it took me several watches to better understand it.
If you like storytelling, The Tales of Jenny and Screech trilogy should be next. He embraces each with an imperfect sound and hints of "improper" pronunciation. It's masterful how his performance draws you in. ("Money Game" is also great storytelling, though completely different.)
I understand his mother is a singer, but I'm not sure what he was taught. I know he learned to play guitar watching videos of Hendrix and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers). He first started selling music by producing beats and making CDs of them when he was young. He began attending a musical college, in Bath I think, but dropped out sĥortly when he became too ill to attend. He was bedridden for a long time, but read a lot and philosophized a lot, as well as wrote and practiced. He also plays bass, drums and piano, and creates his own beats.

Chalk outlines are actually drawn around the surviving victims of a violent crime, documenting where they were positioned, before being removed by paramedics to attempt lifesaving treatment.
Corpses are able to be left at the scene long enough for crime-scene photographers to record where they lay and what happened, but the potential survivors only get a chalk outline.
If they don't survive medical treatment the chalk outline may be their only testimony of what happened to them.
It's an extremely common misconception about chalk outlines only being drawn around dead bodies, rather than surviving victims...which is a great metaphor for how society views chronic illness.
You are already perceived as dead by outsiders, or act in a way as if you may as well be dead, withdrawn, even though you're still alive. Drawing an outline around yourself? 😢

You need to listen to more Ren to truly appreciate his vocals. I can guarantee that he'll surprise you! He has a great voice. Capable of multiple voices, styles and tones. More powerful than you'd think and with oodles of control. He understands vocal light and shade very well and adds little subtleties and nuances. It may help to know that his vocal icons are Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley.
I'd recommend "Man's World" to hear yet another side of Ren. It's part of a trio of songs, sung with Sam Tompkins, whilst busking in Brighton. It's a good place to start, for certain. His live acoustic version of murder is another. After a while you realise that a lot that you thought was relatively random, is very deliberate. He also loves to play around on the edges of imperfection, which is always something that I love in a musician. He'll sometimes do the same while playing an instrument. He loves his guitars but he can play ten instruments well. Half of them ridiculously well! He also lays down all his own music/beats and is a top-notch producer. He directs most of his own videos too. Most of them recorded live, in a single take. As with this song and Hi Ren. His lyricism is fantastic. He's a poet really. He also raps like a rap god, with incredible flow and constant changes of flow and cadence. He also has a wicked sense of humour, which pops up frequently. He's entirely self-taught Mostly in the gaps in the chronic pain caused by his array of serious medical conditions. The one exception is his voice. He was helped on some basic vocal techniques, by his mother who, funnily enough, is a vocal coah! :)

For me its the imperfections that make it perfect.
CHINCILLA is amazing. As others have said, please do 'how to be me' the live version, but for her solo songs, Fingers live is stunning but many over look 'cold water' you'll find in Chinchilla topic and not on her channel. It's just next level stunning.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. Your insight is very interesting, and seeing you discover Ren is a lot of fun. Ren said in an interview somewhere that the way he feels the music is very important to his writing process, and you can see that in his live performances. There is a Sting cover which you might enjoy, by the way. It is with his band 'The Big Push'. Three of them sing and play the guitar, which means they do some wonderful harmonizing. They covered Englishman in New York.

If you want to see them together again, you could do "How to be me", also the live version. Its marvelous... But please, please, please don't watch it before your reaction! That's half the fun of it, to get your first unfiltered impression. Nevertheless, very concise and interesting analysis!

It is amazing how thier voices and melody can engage the tear ducts without even grasping the content of the lyrics much like how Floor Jansen of Nightwish causes the same emotional reaction at the 8min 30sec mark of Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken with her tone and meoldy

It's refreshing to hear a vocal coach actually acknowledge the content of the lyrics, the subject matter and message. As opposed to the usual systematic hyper-focused picking through every minutia of the technique. You definitely waded through the minutia, but at least for a few moments acknowledged the scent of the roses. Sometimes I wonder if professional music people miss out on being able to just experience music devoid of analysis.

I think you are right about the lack of formal training. Musically he has said he started with a guitar and making beats for raps, but he grew up in a small village and there was no one to rap or sing, so he had to do it himself. He did go to university to study music, but he was only there briefly, that was when his health issues got in the way. He learnt guitar from TH-cam, not from tutorials, but by slowing down videos to see what great players were doing.

TH-cam only showed me a very short list of your previous work. I've subscribed, of course. If you have not, please react to Aurora. Between Ren, and Aurora, I begin to have some faith in humanity again. I'd suggest The Seed, or Through the Eyes of a Child.

For REN, this was truly his reality. Ren had misdiagnosed Lyme disease for 7 years by conventional doctors who deemed him mentally ill, but when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms.

I know everyone wants you to do the FULL Tale of Jenny and Screech (and Violet), and you should and not prewatch it because it will give you spoilers that come across more genuine for the first time; however, these two sing “How to be me," and pitch-wise it’s phenomenal. Also, I find it to be more powerful than almost anything he’s done (except maybe his most recent live version of the song SU1C1DE on the piano. I think after watching you, you’ll like a lot of his catalog except his straight up hip hop songs. But that’s kinda what makes him so great. The catalog is literally for everyone, and you just listen to the stuff you really like.
