It's not quite like WoW where every expansion fully invalidates your previous experience with a job imo.
Sometimes a job will get a major rework that overhauls everything, but usually that's only for jobs that the community agrees are in a slightly clunky spot already, and the devs let us know ahead of time they're planning to rework it.
For most jobs in a new expansion, their existing kit usually just gets cleaned up a little bit, maybe trimmed down slightly, and then a handful of new abilities, or even just upgrades to existing abilities, get added on top. Basically they stay the same, and it feels more like an update to what you already know, rather than having to relearn entirely.
EDIT - Couple other answers for some questions you had!
Positionals: For any melee DPS job, some of their attacks get damage boosts or other bonuses if they're executed from the target's rear or flank, depending on the ability.
Tank Immunity Abilities: Every tank has one "Get out of death free" button, on a long cooldown. They're useful for moments when you bit off more than you can chew pulling mobs in a dungeon, or for weathering a tankbuster from a boss if you're caught on the back foot. In higher end content, they're a vital tool to plan out the usage of. Each tank's works differently, so being familiar with how they work is a useful skill.
Does Every Job Have Stickers Like the Samurai?: Every job has some kind of resource to manage, although they frequently integrate into the job in very different and varied ways.
Off Global Cooldown Abilities: Every job has a bunch of abilities that are not affected by the global cooldown. These abilities can be used in between global cooldown abilities. For example, I'm a dragoon main, and while every global cooldown I'm keeping my two main combos going, I have loads of abilities I can hit in between those attacks. Because the global cooldown is longer than in WoW, there's more chance to do things in between the attacks.
New Abilities Each Expansion: Absolutely, every job gets new stuff every expansion. Sometimes only one or two things, but there WILL be new things.
I probably missed a few things, but I hope some of this helps.

This expectation is held in ever RPG/MMORPG at high levels. If your Healer is not healing, they must be damaging. If they are not damaging, they must be CC'ing. Even tabletop RPGs expect support roles to deal damage. Only new players unable to yet play their class don't do those things.

Top dps and lowest dps is about 10% on average. (23k vs 21k) but 4 dancers will have worse dps than average (due to their get most of their dps via boosting others than their personal). Also having a mixed party of ranged, magic and melee is better than just ranged (lose 2% static boost on all stats)

FFXIV handles classes a bit differently then in WoW... All classes and class combinations are viable. Sure there's a Meta and some classes are easier to progress with then others. But the main point is that you get rewarded for bringing a mix of jobs. All the role types share some similarities, but they all bring something unique too the table. Dancers for example can super-buff a Samurai which makes up for Dancers marginaly lower DPS. Red Mages can instant res constantly(hence why they are called Ress-mages). Black Mages are the strongest DPS in the game, but can be heavially punished by movement, while summoners are a more mobile caster DPS. Just to name a few examples...

DNC is just BRD, but better. You deal slightly less personal DPS, being the absolute weakest DPS instead of only the *second* weakest, but in exchange for that, you get way better buffs. Sadly, between DNC and MCH, there's really no *actual* reason to play BRD. BRD really only has one significant buff that they give out every 3 minutes (which doesn't even apply to them) and the rest of the time they're pretty much just a significantly worse MCH unless you really want to count the fact that they can buff the entire party's damage output by a whopping 1%.

  • @dhamp_
    @dhamp_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

There's also 11/12 more *full* classes that aren't mentioned!
8 are Crafters who all play the same, and have a fully realised gameplay mechanic for crafting. It's even got its own endgame, that's on par with PvE for difficulty! They also actually create relevant gear, (its not uncommon for high end raiders to buy complete sets of the latest crafted gear to help progression as a new tier starts) as well as awesome cosmetic and collectible items, including glowing versions of iconic themed weapons.
2 are Botanist and Miner, who play the same as each other, and are more in-depth than in other games, but are relatively straightforward.
These are fully realised Jobs, that have to be levelled from 1-80, and yes, you can do them all on one character to their full potential. No capping or restrictions on what you can do, and actually they all benefit if you do the others, as you often need to make, say, rivets as a Blacksmith to use to make spears as a Carpenter.
Then we have Blue Mage, which is a "Limited Job" which is a fun mini-game style content that levels super fast, and is capped at 10 levels lower than the current level cap. It learns spells from enemies, is unbalanced as all hell (and batshit levels of fun as a result), and isnt allowed in "regular" group content - you have to form groups specifically for it. It's capable of playing all three roles, depending on the skills you equip. Its also got a challenge mode set of instances designed to test your ability to strategically plan your skillsets. Also, its most powerful attack kills you to use, and is part of normal strategies. Expect to see BLU players randomly exploding in capital cities.
Then we have Fisher. This is a rabbit hole you'll inevitably decide to try for a few minutes, then wake up three months later with bags and retainers full of different types of fish and bait, mumbling something about weather patterns, fish wheeling, and ocean fishing. It gets everyone in the end, its best to just accept its going to happen.

Also once you get a hang of slidecasting and using your instant casts like xeno and procs when you're forced to move, it's not as bad as some people would expect IMO. Honestly, to me, MNK, BRD and DRG are a lot more punishing for missing timing, BLM actually has a lot of movement options with teleports, swiftcast, sharpcast for instant fire 3, xeno and triplecast,(even transpose and umbral soul if you must move suddenly and don't have time to cast without dropping Enochian) just takes some practice.

about the casting and moving... theres about a .5 sec delay between moving and interruption of casting. so people do what is referred to as "Slidecasting" where you can actually finish your cast AND move at the same time. once you get it down, you will be doing that all the time. plus Black Mage may need to be stationary but they have two quick movement skills that can teleport them to a party member and then back to their leylines (a damage increasing AOE zone) if they need to move back and forth to maintain their dps.

You asked about the differences about bards and dancers!
    Bard song group effects:
Mage's ballad - Increases damage dealt by party by 1%
Army's Paeon - Increases party direct hit by 3%
Wanderer's Minuet - Increases party critical hit rate by 2%
Bard songs do NOT have any effect on the bard themselves. Bard songs themselves do not cause damage, but cause different skills to have special effects.
    Dancer:
Standard finish (2 step dance) - grants 5% damage buff to yourself and your dance partner. Does a large amount (1000 potency for 1st enemy, 75% potency for all others) of aoe damage.
Technical finish (4 step dance) - grants 5% damage buff to entire party. Does a larger amount (1500 potency for 1st enemy, 75% potency for all others) of aoe damage.
Dance partner gets effects of several dancer abilities: Standard finish, Devilment ( increases critical hit and direct hit by 20% for 20 seconds), and curing waltz (restores HP of all very close by party members with 300 potency cure). Note that curing waltz cures dancer and dance partner seperately, meaning if the two are standing on top of each other, both heals hit.

So for any cast in the game there is timing that you can move when your at .5 sec left on the cast bar(this works on anything even eating food or mounts). That's called "slide casting" in this game and you must master it for the higher raids in game. Thats how this game gets around the long cast times with multiple off gcd moves .

Re tank: To start I believe you will have a couple of choices that will eventually turn into Paladin and Warrior. I'm fairly new myself and don't play a tank but my husband does and I think Maurader becomes Warrior and Gladiator evolves into Paladin at lvl 30. When you level up and get into later content the other two tank jobs become available. I play caster as my main and started out as Arcanist and then evolved into Summoner. You can actually choose either to play Summoner or Scholar as they both lvl up at the same time so you have some versatility. I love Pet classes so it was an obvious choice for me. The spells are much shorter than Black Mage (starting as Thurmaturge) but Black Mage packs a punch when the spells go off. Whatever you start with you can change after you learn it to a certain lvl so try out what looks fun and learn something else if desired.

Something to note about tanks and DPS, and Healing.
Many have already stated about positionals that DPS have. If you decide to Tank, other than dungeon mobs. Make sure you don't dance and move the Dungeon Bosses too much (bar necessary movements to avoid AoEs and such). A lot of higher-leveled/skilled Melees will stay at the point nearest the Flanks and Rear to minimize their movements. And a moving/rotating boss messes that up. However this is something to get used to! So don't feel you should do this right away. Just be conscious of it if you decide to stick with the game for a bit \o/
If you ever decide to heal, eventually you can run dungeons without using any GCD heals. BUT as you start out. Just dps when you can and keep the Tank at an HP level you're comfy with. Dungeons are whack-a-mole-y-ish admittedly. But trials/raids are less so and about planning and understanding encounters to Maximize Damage and minimize healing.

16:25 In FFXIV there is slide casting. The last 0.5 seconds of a cast cannot be interrupted even when moving. So basically you try to cast to that point and then start moving out of the aoe. It's rly easy to learn but on blackmage who wants to move as little as possible it's rly hard to master!

BLMs also gain more mobility tools as they level up - ability to scoot over to another party member, and instacast options.
Later on, most of them plan (through repetition and practice) where they're standing before mechanics/aoes go out, and which option they'll be using to avoid aoes/resolve movement mechanics.

1: Positionals are not a strict requirement, but depending on where the skills requires you to hit the target the damage potency of the skill will change, positionals can be either on the target's flanks, or in their backs
2: Every tank has an invincibility skill that is on a long cooldown, some longer than others (hallowed ground being the strongest with the longest cooldown). They are used to cheese some busters or mechanics, because in some fights you straight up do not have enough CD's or the tank busters just hit too hard.
3:Gauges were introduced in Stormblood and have been getting more complex ever since. I imagine there will be plenty of changes to the gauges in Endwalker
4: Surprising you dont know what off-GCD abilities are, WoW has them. They are abilities that you can use during the global cooldown, but they generally have a longer cooldown. They are usually either really high damage attacks, high potency instant healing spells or damage mitigation abilities
5: Dancer technically has the highest of the ranged DPS. His dance partner buff is incredibly potent on classes like black mage and samurai and the overall DPS increase is gigantic, compared to what a bard or machinist can bring to the party. Plus one of the dancer's steps does a mind numbing amount of damage if it crits.
6: Casters in FFXIV are actually incredibly mobile compared to WoW, because the high tier fights are designed to be incredibly dynamic when it comes to movement. That being said, it's quite difficult to be as optimal as you can on black mage specifically, which is what I find very fun in this game (I main black mage)
    7: Summoner's Titan pet/summon is completely useless
8: Yes, every expansion adds new mechanics to each class. For example from 1 to 50 paladin does not have the magical rotation, but in heavensward they added requiescat which is a skill that increases magic potency plus his magical damage ability Holy Spirit. A bad example for changes to a class (and the only one) is Shadowbringers Warrior. They removed an entire stance full of different abilities and jammed everything into the other, making it extremely simplified and ... braindead. All other changes are generally very interesting
9: Since White Mage is good at healing, and Scholar is good at shielding, the only option they had was to make Astrologian a mix of the two, but that will change in Endwalker with the new healer class Sage and they will embrace the meta that the players themselves created, which is having a shielder and a healer. AST will become a pure healer, possibly removing his shield abilities and adding others instead, and Sage will be a shielder. This has been confirmed
ps: if you have any questions let me know, I am very experienced in the game. also I loved your video, welcome to FF !

Fun vid, some points to expand upon your commentary
Tanks play like a DPS that happen to hold aggro. Compared to melee DPS, they have less oGCD damaging abilities (used between global cooldowns) in favour of proper timing of defensive oGCDs. Each tank does have an invulnerability and yes, you tend to plan out their uses during a raid boss and work together with the other tank to maximise usage of cooldowns.
Melee DPS are all very distinct from each other and are all pretty well balanced against each other DPS wise when accounting for group damage increases through cooldowns like the ninja trick attack. They have positional attacks that require you to attack with certain abilities from behind or the side, so keep still when tanking if you have melee in your group :)
Samurai is probably the most straight forward to pick up and play, with dragoon at number 2, then Monk and Ninja being fairly similar in higher brain cell requirements but for different reasons.
Ranged physical don't have cast times so have loads of mobility, and their personal dps is balanced against the level of group utility they provide...in theory anyway, Dancer being highest utility, Bard being in the middle, and Machinist providing only defensive utility. Dancer selects a partner that they can pass buffs to during the fight, and benefit from their partners attacks. This coupled with good group utility and damage buffs tend to put them higher on the group desire meter than the other 2. Overall, ranged sit lower in DPS contribution to melee and casters, but the trade-off is that they're a little more friendly to newer players and have good group support.
Casters, as you rightly noticed, the black mage has longer casts and it would be irritating to need to keep moving from things and interrupting casts. This is part of the draw of the job though and one of the high skill ceilings it has. Learning a fight as a BLM, learning when you can use certain spells, when to save cooldowns and so on is what will determine whether you are a good or bad BLM. Because of the way fights are scripted, you end up "learning a fight as a BLM", rather than "Learning a fight as a DPS". Summoner has a lot going on but has quite a bit of mobility and comparable DPS to the other high DPS jobs. Red mage loses a little bit of its potency in favour of more mobility and group utility but is very fun to play. It's a good introduction to casters in 14.
Healers are expected to DPS in groups. White mage is most similar to a WoW holy priest, playing whack a mole with health bars, but has great DPS contribution to the party and a lot of oh crap buttons for reactive healing. Scholar is proactive, with a lot of tools for various situations, but will benefit greatly from fight knowledge. Astro is a little in between, in that you select to be in the regen stance or shield stance and cannot change in combat. In raid situations you usually like to have a shield healer and a pure healer, with Astro being able to flex between both, but this is being changed in Endwalker with astro becoming a pure healer an Sage coming in as a second shield healer.
    Have fun :)

Every tank has a move that players call their "invuln". Despite the name, it doesn't necessarily make them take no damage, but it does ensure they can't die for a short time. They are *long* cooldowns and are typically used to reduce the heat in the spiciest parts of the fight, or sometimes to cheese what would otherwise be a very annoying tankswap (e.g. a double swap with tight timing).
WAR (warrior) has the shortest CD on their invuln, 4m. It simply prevents their HP from going below 1 for 8s. Thankfully they have some self-healing that they can use right as it's about to fall off so that the first sneeze doesn't delete them. WAR's invuln comes back fast enough that they can sometimes squeeze an extra (good) use of it in the fight, which helps place them as one of the toughest tanks defensively.
DRK (dark knight) has the next shortest at 5m cd. When activated it gives them a 10s window in which they can die without dying. Once they "die", the buff is replaced with a 10s debuff that also prevents their HP from going below 1. However, if they are not healed for a total amount equal to their max health - 1 before that debuff expires, they die for real even if the fight is over. VERY stressful for healers as DRK, unlike WAR, has almost nothing to contribute to their own healing. Widely considered the worst invuln, DRK makes up for it by having better mitigation than other tanks overall. Whether this puts them ahead or behind on the balance of it depends on the fight.
GNB (gunbreaker) is the next one at 6m cd. This one drops their HP to 1, but simultaneously makes them invulnerable to damage for the following 8s. A bit weird, but actually very easy on the healers in practice. Despite having a faster CD than the PLD one, their two invulns end up being used in exactly the same pattern in almost every case.
PLD (paladin) has the longest cooldown at 7m cd. They just straight up become invulnerable to damage for 10s. Basically the gold standard for invulns, at the cost of typically only being usable once per fight. Twice in ultimates or final savage fights.
None of these work on enrage damage, however. So if the boss enrages you still die instantly. And some mid-fight checks can deal enrage damage to ensure that certain mechanics are not cheesed. This is why they are used on damage that you absolutely have to take anyway, but in a way that is either easier on your CD usage or that makes execution easier. As far as I know they never make a tankswap deal enrage damage if you skip the swap, so even if it deals 10* as much damage if you fail to swap the invuln will still protect you. (Depending on what forces the swap, however, you might still have to do the swap anyway. And most swaps aren't worth handling this way.)

Yes, all classes have some variation of a 'mini-game' of some kind. It can be as simple as Warrior's 'rage' resource, accumulating and spending it, Red Mage having to watch and balance their White/Black magic, or something like Bard where you're managing your DOTs and building/using a resource bar and making sure you always have a song up and one of those songs you need to watch for procs while ANOTHER song has an entirely different mini-game built in. (I admit I exaggerate a bit there for humor, as it's not too complicated, but hopefully you get what I mean.) It allows all of the jobs to have a different feel to them, on top of just the thematic differences.
But with tanks and healers, they typically share some core skills (outside of things called 'Role Actions' that they literally share across the role). Tanks all have an invulnerability of some kind (as you noticed) and the strength of it affects how long it takes to recast. e.g. Paladin is the strongest, so it is the longest recast timer at 7 minutes; while Warrior, being a weaker one, recharges in only 4 minutes. Healers have a basic heal, a stronger basic heal, a utility heal that provides shields/regen, an AOE heal, and an AOE heal that applies shields/regen. Outside of that they typically feel different, though arguably the healers are fairly homogeneous right now.
Now, Dancer v. Bard. Bard used to be the utility-focused ranged DPS until Dancer was introduced in the latest expansion, and they removed a lot of Bard's extra stuff. (e.g. a buff that increased mana regeneration, a buff that increased TP (an old resource) regeneration, a buff that reduced incoming damage on a single target, a song that would increase damage taken by nearby enemies... RIP Foe Requiem, prepull just hasn't felt the same.) Now that Dancer's entire identity is based on supportive utility, with the lower personal DPS you'd expect from a support, Bard's new identity is somewhere in between the supportive Dancer and the selfish Machinist.
We do get new things each expansion, but they did get pretty bloated and Shadowbringers was our big cleanup expansion. Endwalker is going to be our big stat squish, it sounds like. For healers, parties tend to favor a combination of regen healer (White Mage or Astrologian using Diurnal sect) and shield healer (Scholar or Astrologian using Nocturnal sect). But it's not required in all content. Endwalker will see the introduction of a fourth healer, and they have said their making a more clear distinction between reactive/regen healers (White Mage and Astrologian) and proactive/shield healers (Scholar and the new kid...). A bit rambly but I hope this helps!

One thing about positioning to avoid mechanics as a Black Mage, most often the telegraphs for them last for a few seconds so if you're casting and the telegraph starts you can generally finish the cast and move out without cancelling the spell. Additionally, FFXIV usually only cares if you were in the danger zone when it fades away, if you move out of it and move right back to that spot after it fades (as long as the attack wasn't a DOT) then even though you'll look like you got caught up in the attack you won't take damage.
Also remember that the video is done from the perspective of lvl 60-70 classes. You'll get the abilities handed to you a bit at a time to learn how they fit into rotations and situations as you go along. An example is you'll get your invincibility skill long before the first boss with a tank buster comes along and due to the slightly slower flow of combat as compared to WoW, mistakes are usually more forgiving (at least until Savage and Ultimate raids where they pull no punches).

Bard and Dancer both have support abilities but they differ in a major way. Bards supports are mainly utility: a cleanse debuff skill, and an increased healing on target skill. They also have a passive Direct Hit increase so long as they’re in a song stance, but their core rotation revolves around their solo damage.
Dancer’s on the other hand, have the lowest dps in the game. But it’s balanced because of two things: they give themselves (and a dancer partner) a permanent 5% attack up as long as they standard step correctly, and provide an additional 5% attack for the whole party which lasts for 20 seconds. They buff damage directly unlike Bards, but because of this they do not have high solo numbers. Their combo rotation is really fun though, i think it’s one of the funnest to play.

Each expansion adds ten levels to the level cap, every class gets major/minor adjustments in nerfs, buffs, or in some cases, overhauls. As well as new/upgraded abilities in those new ten levels. Expansions also add in new classes for people to play as. So, the first expansion (and the only one that's part of the free trial) Heavansward added Dark Knight, Machinist, and Astrologian. The second expansion Stormblood added in Samurai and Red Mage, the third Shadowbringer added Gunbreaker and Dancer. And the newest expansion coming out later this year, Endwalker, is adding in a new Melee DPS in Reaper, and a new Healer in Sage.
TLDR; Each expansion adds to the level cap, makes adjustments to the current classes, and adds new classes.

On note of your example with moving while casting, FF14 has something called slide casting, where the last 0.5 seconds of the cast will not be cancelled by moving. Black mage though is the job about figuring out each fight to the point you need to move the least. As for dancer and bard, dancer differs from bard as bard is a party wide passive buffer, and dancer is a partner buffer
each song the bard rotates through gives a different buff the the whole party and you otherwise simply need to use your skills and react to your procs, bard gets procs by applying 2 DoTs to the boss and uses a 3rd skill to reset the duration to ensure they don't drop, every tick of damage each of the 2 DoTs has a %chance to give you a proc, your first song's proc gives you a stack for a special oGCD heavy damage move, your second resets the cooldown on the bard's main oGCD attack, and the third decreases your GCD.
Dancer is the job that uses a skill to assign another party member as their partner, as a dancer you will be doing a 2 skill combo, but every cast of these 2 skills has a 50% chance to enable use of an enhanced version of that skill, using an enhanced version then has a 50% chance to generate a resource used on your oGCD damage attack which itself has a 50% chance to unlock a final oGCD attack. On top of this dancer has 2 dances that you saw. when you use a dance, your 2 single target and 2 AoE GCDs become coloured steps and you will be prompted by your job guage to press them in a certain order, standard step requires 2 moves and then recasting the dance to work and technical step requires all 4 and a recast, you can do recast before you have completed the steps or having done the wrong steps, but getting them right gives you 2 of the highest potency attacks in the game in addition to standard step use giving a 5% raw damage boost to you and your partner. However dancer is the lowest person DPS class because they have the most potent buff in this, but also because who you pick as partner is not based on whose doing most damage (cause you can't see to know anyway) but rather a priority list based on which jobs provide the most "weaponskills" (which are usually GCDs) as each use gives you part of your secondary guage for your sabre dance burst skill. So as a dancer, you are highly dependent on having a good partner in return for being the best buffer in the game, while bard just buffs everyone while doing their own thing.
Also cause he doesn't really mention it at all, but Melee DPS in FF14 have a second reason to always bitch about mechanics, they have positional, the ring around the boss has 3 zones, the front 180° is the front, the back sides are flanks and the cut out at the back is the rear. each melee has skills that gain significant damage bonuses for hitting the boss in the flank or rear depending on the ability, and that difference is far from negligeble. Honestly ignoring positionals as a melee DPS will make you deal less than the tank or healer.

You do have a few more powerful spells that you can hardcast, but the majority of my abilities are instacast so dancing out of the fire usually doesn't affect my rotation at all. There have been a number of times where being able to insta-ress the party healer has saved us from a wipe and it also has a utility ability that buffs everyone else's damage. I think the most unique thing about it though is that you simultaneously level summoner and scholar. So I can switch over to healer for a bit if I want without having to level a completely separate job.

I started playing WoW in 2006. I started playing FFXIV in 2021. One thing I learned very quickly in FFXIV is slide casting. Unlike in WoW, where moving cancels a spell, even if it's 0.1 seconds from finishing, in FFXIV, you get a little leeway that allows the spell to finish even if you move at the end of it. This cuts back on that thing you mentioned with black mages where they have to cancel casts to dodge mechanics.

So I don't know if you already started, it is important to note however, that not all of these jobs can be played from the beginning. The starting classes are Gladiator (Paladin), Marauder (Warrior), Pugilist (Monk), Lancer (Dragoon), Archer (Bard), Thaumaturge (Blackmage), Conjurer (Whitemage) and Arcanist (Summoner/Scholar).
Rogue (Ninja) can be unlocked once you hit lvl 10 if you are in Limsa Lominsa or at latest lvl 15 Main Scenario when you start traveling.
All other jobs where added in the expansions and start with a level boost. Darknight, Machinist and Astrologian can be unlocked once you reach Heavensward and start at lvl 30, Samurai and Redmage start at lvl 50 and can be unlocked once you reach that level with any job/class. Same goes for Gunbreaker and Dancer only at lvl 60.
All job-quests are blue quest and should be you're №1 priority.

Something a lot of people coming from other MMOs expect (heck, I came from Final Fantasy XI and even THERE this was an issue) is for there to be preferences for certain classes/jobs. There really isn't. The classes in this game are VERY balanced. Literally the ONLY time you will ever see even the slightest of bit of groups wanting a specific job is in the most difficult of endgame content, and even there it's not nearly as much of thing as with other MMOs. This really is a game where you can just play what you enjoy.
I mean, obviously there will come times when they need a specific ROLE (tank, healer, DPS), and if you're only playing one class you may not be able to fill THAT requirement, but that's a whole different issue, I'd say.
Edit: Also, I just remembered the part about DNC, and as a DNC main I feel the need to point out: when they say "lowest personal DPS", that makes it sound like there's a signifigant difference. There is not. The only way you'd even tell there was a difference is with a parser, and while I typically avoid doing any content that people would parse in the first place (until it's older and people would no longer care), I'm fairly sure the margin isn't very big. Heck, when DNC first came out and I picked it up, the first thing I noticed about it was that the DPS felt huge.

Off global cooldown abilities are abilities that have their own seperate cooldown and dont require the gcd to be up, and they dont affect the gcd. Jumps for example in dragoon are off global cooldowns, you can use a skill, jump, use another skill, being able to fit 3 skills into 2 gcds

Job changes and additions in expansions usually come together with some button pruning, whether it's from removing certain abilities that are either unused or that don't interact with the rest of the job's skillset very much. But so far there has always been some new abilities to look forward to with every expansion release.

  • @gamester512

Yes. Pretty much every Job (they're called Jobs in FF XIV rather than Classes) is given at least a few new "toys" to play with in every expansion, though a given Job isn't usually given a complete overhaul unless it actually *needs* it. And every expansion has also added at least two new Jobs to the game (one of them actually added three!). The Heavensward expansion added the Dark Knight, Machinist, & Astrologian (it's also worth noting that the three Heavensward Jobs are the only new Jobs so far that can't be unlocked until you have started Heavensward proper, every other new Job can be unlocked before starting Heavensward as long as you meet a specific level requirement in another class). Stormblood added Samurai & Red Mage. Shadowbringers added Gunbreaker & Dancer. And the upcoming Endwalker expansion will add the Reaper & Sage. And all existing Jobs will be given tweaks and re-works to streamline them and help them do their job even better. Every other Job in the game is a "vanilla" Job.
As for "what are positionals", some Jobs like the Dragoon, Ninja, Samurai, & Monk have moves within their respective combos that will deal more damage (or will proc an extra effect) if the attack is performed from either behind the boss or to the side of the boss, so those Jobs will be in almost constant motion as they move from the boss's flank to their rear and back again as their combo's positionals dictate. However, the game does help a bit by having each move's icon on your hotbar gain a noticeable visual effect to indicate that you can benefit from that move's positional or added effect.
Other Jobs like the Red Mage have a couple spells that require another spell to be used first in order to proc a buff that then allows the use of another spell, though this usually only applies to Veraero opening up a use of Verstone and Verthunder opening up a use of Verfire, and those spells that are "unlocked" are short-cast spells, while the ones that open them up are long-cast spells. This is why the Red Mage will usually cast their basic Jolt/Jolt II spell (or if a party member is hurting, they could instead cast Vercure which is a fast-cast single-target heal, and this can also be used to then instant-cast Verraise which is their single-target revival spell), and then use Dualcast to instant-cast Veraero/Verthunder, and then if they proc a cast of Verstone/Verfire, they can then use that spell and then cast the opposing long-cast spell to try for the opposite spell. A Red Mage is pretty much always very welcome in any party, because they are pretty much the ultimate "team player" Job. In most cases if the Healer(s) are all down, that would more or less ensure a wipe, but *not* if a Red Mage (or to a lesser extent, a Summoner) is present, as the Red Mage can very quickly get one/both Healers revived extremely quickly (they can actually revive downed party members even faster and better than a dedicated healer, though having to do it too much in a short time frame will very quickly burn through their pool of MP).
And you were also spot-on with your guess about the Paladin's "wings", when the Paladin activates that ability it protects all party members that are standing behind them and also reduces the damage taken by the Paladin themselves. The Paladin is the Tank that has the heaviest focus on actually protecting their teammates, while other Tanks usually protect their team by simply keeping the boss(es) facing away from the rest of their team.
But every single Job is perfectly viable and capable of helping their party just fine (Astrologian can switch between Heals/Shields because the other two Healers specialize in one or the other, with White Mage being heavy on straight-up heals, while Scholar is more Shield heavy, so in 8-man & 24-man runs, if an Astro is paired with a White Mage they will usually go "shield mode", and if paired with a Scholar they will instead go "Heal Mode" to complement the task that the other Healer is good at, but even 2 White Mages or 2 Scholars will still work just fine....and with two Astros, one can go Heals and the other can go Shields). Party composition is pretty flexible so that even the most randomly assembled party of Jobs is just as capable of clearing runs as any other. Of course, some Jobs have a higher "priority" when it comes to getting healed/revived, generally going in order of highest priority to lowest being Tank -> Healer -> DPS. Though when it comes to DPS, Red Mages will more often than not be among the first ones to be healed/revived because of how much utility they can offer with their own heals & revives....which is why in many cases if most of a party is down in one of the 24-man Raids, once the Tank/Healers are back up, then the next priority for outgoing revives & heals will usually be any Red Mages, followed by Summoners, and then anyone else.

The abilities themselves were always there but in older ff14 you had to track the timers for DOT skills and debuffs by a small little icon at the top of your screen. The stickers and gauges were introduced to make tracking these waaaaaay easier.
Also dancers DPS is dependent on their dance partner. If they pair up with a class with crazy dps, they get crazy dps. They also boost the dps of their partner.

  • @fredxu99
    @fredxu99 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Basically for all of the jobs, they're balanced so that they either have super high personal DPS, or they have party buffs and utilities to make up for it. For example, Black Mage has super high personal DPS but you won't always have an optimal rotation due to movement, whereas Summoner and Red Mage have lower personal DPS but they're more flexible with movement and can revive party members. The Ranged DPS don't have any cast times, so they can move around as much as they want and have permanent uptime, however their personal DPS is lower. They also usually have good party utilities like Bard and Dancer, with Dancer having lower personal DPS because they amp party DPS so much. This even applies for the healers and tanks. White Mage has very strong personal DPS but lack buffs for party members, whereas Scholar and Astrologian have potent DPS buffs. For tanks, Warrior and Dark Knight are bulkier and have a lot of self-healing built into their kits so they serve as good Main Tanks, but they have lower damage as a result, where as Paladin and Gunbreaker have great personal damage but are less bulky and are usually Off Tanks (yes I know Paladin being an off tank it's a bit weird hehe).
Every job in FF14 is viable for end-game content, but people often choose specific classes for certain strategies, and some classes are more flexible than others in specific fights, etc.

  • @Varichan
    @Varichan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Bard and dancer play pretty differently.
Bard pretty much just holds up his dots and rotates his songs one after another and utilizes their procs.
The dancer presses his two buttons most of the time, switches it up a bit, when getting a proc from one of them and then saves up on feathers and their espirit gauge and only uses them, when they are either full or their two minute cooldowns are up. One of them being Technical Step that increases the entire parties dmg by 5% and devilment for more dmg &critchance. During the window of these two being up the dancer then tries to squeeze all of his feather & saber dances for maximum burst window.
Else where the bard gives rather minor party-wide buffs over the entire fight and not just every 2 minutes, the dancer gives a 5% dmg buff to his partner over the entire fight and also affects that partner with several other of his abilities, like the afforementioned devilement dmg CD and his self-heal.
Well and then there is the point, that dancer is probably the most agile job in the entire game.

I think something that is worth mentioning here when you come from WoW a few DPS classes in WoW might have access to powerful defensive CDs like Aspect of the Turtle e.g.
That doesn't exist in Final Fantasy, so if you play DPS you might have defensive CDs but those defensive CDs are not comparable to Turtle or Mage Iceblock and so on
In addition to that Melee DPS have so called positionals as mentioned in the video. Skills that have positionals do more damage if you hit them from the right side. Rear from behind and flank from the side. So you want to move enemies as little as possible if you have Melees in your party so that they can hit their positionals frequently

  • @Kimcirac
    @Kimcirac 3 ปีที่แล้ว

in this game every class is pretty balanced, what makes them different is the ammount of party utility (there are some other things but the general rule is that). So for example in ranged DPS: MCH has very low party utility but very big dps, BRD has 50% party utility - damage ration and DNC is like 75% party utility (they have the lowest damage but they give a TON of buffs to 1 person and the party in general). They all have their systems that makes them unique in some way but you can clear any content with ANY job.
Positionals: some melee moves have a base dmg and a buffed dmg, you trigger the buffed one by hitting the boss in the correct place (behind, the side, etc). MNKs are the job with more positionals in the game and their DPS gets destroyed if they miss them.

Regarding ability bloat they seem to try and keep the number of abilities you are using at max level roughly the same through each expansion. This means that some abilities get either combined into other abilities, swapped into Traits which are another component of leveling Jobs, or just removed all together to make room for the new hotness.

Well, the big difference between bard and dancers are on the buffs and party utility, bard give minors buff to all the party but only on a short window (+1% damage or +3% crits or +2% crits for 30 seconds) while Dancer can link himself to another party member and buff him until the end of the dungeon with a permanant +5% damage (and +5% to the whole party (cumulative, your dance partner have both) for 20 seconds all the 2 minutes+ a massive damage nuke while doing it) and can also use his dance partner when Dancer use his heal (heal is a AOE from the dancer AND from the dance partner, and if an ally is in the 2 he is healed by the 2)
another difference is the fact bard is really around his DoTs ans only have ranger attack with limited mobility while Dancer don't have any DoTs but his AOE are at close range (the are around the dancer) and have insane mobility with the 3 dashs and the dance partner is important also for the dancer own DPS since it help to build Saber dance (the most powerfull Dancer skill outside of the steps who are nuke damage) gauge faster
But to stay simple Bard is a DoTs teamwide support while Dancer is a 1 partner focused Support with sometimes partywide boost and their DPS is really different too since bard is more focused on dealing with 1 enemy at a time (applying DoTs, change to applying DoTs on the second) while dancer is very good to attack many enemy at once with the best AOE rotation who do almost the same amount of damage as the single target one (and is also used with Flourish who give you access to your big AOE AND Single damage skills so use them all)

Black Mage is really high risk and it actually takes a while to get the hang of completely. Ironically enough, of the three casters, I'd say it's the most mobile due to triple cast and swift cast (ogcds that let you instantly cast spells. In this case, black mage can insta-cast four spells in succession while moving). Another big thing to get the hang of is slide casting, where you can move for like.. 0.4 seconds before your next cast. It's basically taking advantage of the server ping. Another big thing with Black Mage is your ability to remember a fight and prepare. Since you aren't moving, you have to pre-position a *lot*, and the times you put down your magic circle matter. That's about all I can think about for black mage :'D

One thing to note is that all classes are viable and can clear any content so you can play whatever class you want without worrying about whether or not people would accept you in parties (unless they are also playing the same class). ff14 also allows one character to play all jobs and jobs under the same category can share the same equipment except the weapon so if you want to play a samurai you can also respec into monk/ninja/dragoon without having to re-grind gears.

As far as I understand it (I also only started after ShB release) they revise the old classes and add new abilities but also thin out the abilities from before, so you have about the same amount overall, it's just spaced differently in terms of leveling. And of course, every expansion they add new classes so the balance between them shifts ever so slightly. Like how Bard seems to have been THE buffer and now dancer is cutting into that a little so the Bards abilities got augmented in accordance to that.
Also some classes may seem very similar at first due to some concepts they share but each is still very individual when you actually play them.

Monk got a rework since larrys video game out, they dont have to maintain the lightning mechanic shown in the video anymore. The boost from it is just baked into the class now as a passive and it is much much better. By the way, Positionals are requirements to hit certain attacks from certain places on the monster, like in order to do maximum damage with this attack it must hit from the side or from behind. All of this is described on skill info. Its only a mele dps thing though, every other class doesnt have positionals. Also yes you get new abilities each expansion. Also the shield modes being taken away from astro in november for the new expansion to make way for the new shield healer sage, and because of that astro will be more regeneration healing with the other leftover stance to be like white mages type of healer.

  • @eliadil4564

So, a thing to not forget is that *every* class is viable and played at super high level content. If somebody deals a bit less personal damage (dancer) it usually means that they have a lot of party utility to compensate. In regards to ranged(not casters), Bards are the middle ground between raw damage (like machinist) and party utility (like dancer), so everyone has a place.
Something else to take account with casters is that most of them have a lot of movement tools, and there are even well known techs like Slidecasting to allow you to move right before a cast finishes (and obviously still finish your cast). So interrupting casts to do mechanics happens way less than on other mmos.
Overall, everything works, and everything plays differently. So just take your time picking what you think looks neat. You can change class if it doesn't suit you anyway so no need to stress out about it ;)

Bard is more like a ranged dps that can give you buffs and take a debuff when necessary (the only ranged dps that can do this, the other ones that have this ability are healers with 'esuna')... Dancer is a ranged dps who can work as a very light shield healer because although it gives buffs to the dance partner and the party, the job can slightly heal (mainly you and your dance partner but if you stand in a group, the party gets healed as well) and give a shield.

Except for the fact that BRD's song buffs are an absolute joke. A 1% damage buff, 3% direct hit rate buff, and 2% crit chance buff. That comes out to maybe an extra 200-ish DPS for each party member. DNC brings way more rDPS to the party than BRD ever will, and MCH's personal DPS is so much higher than BRD's that they'll more than compensate for the fact that they don't give out buffs. By picking BRD, you're pretty much just choosing to make everyone else's run slower than it otherwise could have been if you'd just played one of the two other physical ranged DPS classes instead.
Hoping Endwalker does good things for the class so it can actually be relevant again. SCH and DRG need help too.

On the off-chance you read this before you find out the answer yourself, yes, all tank classes have invulnerability abilities, but they are last resorts because they often have very long cooldowns (like ten or fifteen minutes). Usually they use damage mitigation skills like Rampart which reduces damage by 20% for 20 seconds with 90 second cool down, and cycle through those. The Dark Knight has the best of these, however; for about 10 seconds (if I recall correctly) it negates damage up to 30% of your max HP. Hit that just before a tank buster and boom, you sometimes don't take any damage at all! This is balanced by having the worst "can't kill me" ability of the bunch. It reduces your HP to 1, and the enemy can't bring you lower than that, but if your health doesn't get back to 100% in ten seconds then you die and someone has to resurrect you anyway.

  • @baichibee

So, this is probably already said, but each expansion expands what the classes are capable of from the previous expansion making it more like the fundamentals are early and the more advanced stuff is later. And yes, all classes have some kind of gauge or sticker resource. Also, as for positional, Melee dps have attacks that do more damage depending on where they are positioned on hitting the enemy, mostly behind. There isn't much difference between bard and dancer except that dancer focuses more on singular buffing and support where bard is more party support.
And again, pick what you think looks cool. All classes are viable :3

15:30 to answer your question, the reason dancer and bard seem to have very similar skillsets is because dancer basically stole some of bards best abilities pre-shadowbringers. and while bard got a buff a few small patches later to boost its personal dps to nearly match machinist, it lost most of its incredibly powerful party support synergy to dancer who is now the exclusive ranged dps class in extreme raid statics, this is the reason bard and machinist absolutely freaking hate dancer while every other class loves dancer. you'll notice if you ever bring up the subject to anyone who isn't a bard or machinist main they just try to change the subject and brush it under the rug because they love dancer too much.
greetings from an ex-bard main, now drifting between SAM, WHM, SMN, SCH, AST, DRK, DRG, & PLD because i feel lost without my beloved bard.

I don't know if you've figured this out by now, but the difference between Dancer and Bard is that Bard permanently buffs the entire party (Their 3 songs rotate without gaps), whereas Dancer only buffs one ally permanently and only buffs the entire party for, like, 10/15 seconds.
There are also other differences that you'll notice once you play. Bard (BRD) has to keep the two DoTs permanently on the enemy, which can get tricky considering the ridiculous amount of procs you have to pay attention to. Dancer (DNC) is a much easier job with a kind of hold-and-release type of gameplay that makes it go from really low actions per minute to around 3 skills per second in short burst phases. So even if two jobs have similar roles, their gameplay style can be really different. Trying them all out and finding the right one is a matter of time.

I personally play Ninja, Paladin and White mage. Ninja is a physical Dps which has a super fun rotation (plus it’s class quest is fun), Paladin is one of the more lasting tanks bec it can dps, tank and heal so it’s good for solo content, and white mage is just a really straightforward healer that has some good aoes that heal teammates and also damage enemies or stun them

  • @fivelfivel
    @fivelfivel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think heres a few things that is a little different from modern wow per role:
Melees are very positional - meaning hitting flank, rear or front is important for specific attacks - so tanks shouldn’t be wiggling the boss/mobs around, they should be moving/spinning the boss/mobs as little as possible.
Healers are ofc meant to abc (always be casting) but incoming dmg is usually in such a way where you don’t need to spam heal so instead you time your heals or shields correct and do dps the rest of the time.
Tank should use cooldowns basically all the time - as you noticed all roles are ment to dps first and foremost - so to give healers more time to dps. So a good tank doesn’t use cooldowns as oh-shit situational but rather as a way to give more room for more dps output. And ofc tanks too need to dps.

If you do decide to heal keep in mind that Astrologian will get a full re-work for Endwalker and it will transition into a pure healer form closer to White Mage. The new healer being introduced will be a shield healer like SCH. Each class will have its own flavor but the end result is that we will have two versions of pure healing and two versions of shield healing to choose from.
I don’t foresee any more hybrid jobs in the future as Astrologian was a nightmare to balance.
Also pet jobs are on their way out. If they somehow survive Endwalker I wouldn’t expect them to stick around for next expansion. Instead the healing/damage will come from
the player with the pet being a visual flavor to the spell rather than its source. For example instead of Your Demi-Bahamut flaring, you flare and the spell effects looks like a demi-Bahamut and then quickly dissipates.

The best thing is all different types of healers, although using the Roulette function (for raids) you don't know what you are going to get. All healers are viable for any fight, they just do it differently ;) Also, when you pick a job, you get eased in to it by unlocking new spells via either the Main Story Quest, or the special job quests. You are looking at all maxed out jobs and it looks very overwhelming. Trust me, if you get to that level, you know exactly how to play :) Good luck and have fun in the game!!
