Well, the School of Friendship can't be seen in the background, and Spike doesn't have wings, so the special can be assumed to take place sometime between the cold open of School Daze, Part 1 and the school's official opening. That said, co-director Katrina Hadley mentioned that the creators simply didn't know that Spike would be getting wings when they worked on "Spring Breakdown".
Also, I still find it funny that despite two characters voiced by Tara Strong being present in the same scene, it's still Rainbow Dash who gets to reference Ben Tennyson's catchphrase.
This had a few funny moments, not as many as the last special but a few. A few gripes here. The Storm King didn't possess his own magic last I checked. The magic should have come from the staff which would mean that the princesses' didn't get all their magic back. I doubt this other portals existed before now and were caused by the uncontrolled release of magic through the statue since the LOE ending, but I could be very wrong. And if these portals did exist prior, did creatures from Equestria ever go through them, leading to things like Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster? All the crew of this ship should be fired on this ship for their incompetence and this crews line shut down. The back-up generators failing to activate after the main generator burnt out, allowing unlicensed teenagers to work on the engine when the staff should have an engineering crew on hand, the captain being nowhere in sight, the crew ignoring a clearly distressed and alone minor, and no one attending to the life boats and allowing three teenage passengers to make off with them. Not to mention advanced electrical systems should not be using a non-common two pronged connector. Also, the crew didn't radio for help being dead in the water. And I think Ragamuffin and Rarity scenes were a spoof of the relationship between Jack and Rose from Titanic. As for the Celestia and Luna's throughout the generations: Pokemon got away with it with the Officer Jenny's and Nurse Joy's that all existed at the same time with the same names.

From what I've heard didn't the creators of this special know that Spike would get wings when they started making it.
