I think the Prince is caught in the Prince Charming/Your Hero mentality. What he loved about Di Ziyuan was his role as his protector and savior. Simultaneously, this role was an extension of his fair and just personality. His thing is to be needed. The Di Ziyuan he got in reality, is not the same as the Di Ziyuan he had in mind. This Di Ziyuan does not need a Hero. She confronted the Emperor and cleared her family name on her own. She doesn't need his protection. I am of the opinion that this is the reason he falters.
